BioWare: The Old Republic to “last for decades”
BioWare said over the weekend that it intends to have Star Wars: The Old Republic to keep going for “decades.”

The fact it has 19 worlds within the MMO, as pointed out by senior creative director James Ohlen, during the game’s panel at ComicCon on Saturday.
“Well, I can say that we have 19 major worlds. Then we have an indeterminate number of minor worlds,” he said, as transcribed by the excellently-named DarthHater.
“And our goal, obviously this being an online game, that we’re hoping is going to last for decades, we’re going to be, obviously, adding more to the galaxy map as the game progresses. We want to add dozens of worlds. Hundreds of worlds eventually. In 2025, we’ll hopefully have 500 worlds.”
There you go. Millions of years of enjoyment to come from TOR. Well, not millions, but near enough.
The Old Republic is due to release this holiday season.

Oh yeah… Not sure if he is joking… because SW: the old republic is not even the most anticipated MMO game this year according to http://www.mmorpg.com/
Two months ago it was on third place, now it’s on 5th.
While Guild Wars 2 since the announcement remains the first (and everyone know why. It’s amazing in every aspect there is), Archage 2nd, TSW 3rd and Planetside 2 as 4th.
and thats until we will see Firefall release date, Everquest 3 announcement and of course next Blizzard MMO.
Everyone see SWTOR as a World Of warcraft Rip Off with crappy engine and WoW art style, with old game design and with…. Mass Effect dialogs and with wow rip off marketing campaign.
their last death sentence will be if they are going to release broken game from the start, because WoW formula is old and proven. You can’t make mistakes with it.

They already have a ten year plan, its good to have foresight especially in the MMO genre it gives you a lot of focus on the original where most MMOS just throw the kitchen sink and hope it makes money.

There are plenty of leaked videos from the game infact it is the most polished beta, I have seen in a MMO.

I have to agree with Phoenixblight, the beta videos i’ve seen looks amazing compared to how WoW looked in the beta (which was really really bad xD ). From what i’ve seen, this is the only MMORGP i’m looking forward to, don’t care much for GW2.

@2, Everquest 2 was also the most polished mmo i’v ever seen with voice acting and with the most amazing visuals at it’s time (the first game that used 256 mb videocard in full potential). Everyone said that it was a WOW killer and in the start it was amazing, until…
Bad support, crappy addons and etc.

Did I mention TOR will be a WOW killer? No, I didn’t the only company that will destroy WOW is Blizzard. I don’t care for Everquest 2 its not relevant since its released and it’s generally just a long grinding fest and is not that successful.

Everquest 2 is very successful and it’s not a long grinding fest, it’s the only mmorpg with World of Warcraft that were honoured at the 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for advancing the art form of MMORPG games.
and it’s not grinding fest, compared to World of Warcraft formula that is a REAL grinding fest with instances and typical raiding which is introduced in SWTOR and i never said that you mentioned about a WOW killer, it’s just EA wants it to be (like they wanted Warhammer to be, but failed in the end as always).
What we saw in SWTOR was a typical WoW Rip off. Thats a fact, with crappy animations.
Also, even Everquest 1 is relevant. To this date SOE makes addons to it after 20 years.
When SOE will finally announce Everquest III, every WoW rip off is going to be forgotten as always.

Again don’t care about EverCrack I have my own opinions I have played it for 6 months its boring and uninspiring.
“SWTOR and i never said that you mentioned about a WOW killer, it’s just EA wants it to be (like they wanted Warhammer to be”
No they don’t want to kill WOW, they want it to be successful, there is a difference. I go to school with 3 of the leads of TOR and every single one of them has said they don’t care about WOW they just want to be remembered for making a MMO that everyone wants to play and be successful with it because it will give them the chance to go deeper in the Star Wars universe. Mythic is the one that said it would destroy WOW and he ate his words. Thats why the guy in charge left. He knew he messed up.
“What we saw in SWTOR was a typical WoW Rip off. Thats a fact, with crappy animations.”
I find it hilarious that you think your opinions are facts.

@7 : how can you say they don’t care about WOW… when the game is a COMPLETE rip-off of WOW ?
Have you played it yet ? I am on the beta as we speak and I can tell you that most of the discussion on the open channel can be summed up by “how much the game feels like WOW with a Star Wars skin”
The story is the ONLY thing that stands out, all the rest is below average compared to other MMORPGs…

No I have not played it but I have seen hours of videos of it from sites that leak videos from beta players. I also have friends that are being paid by Bioware to play test it and they also have said its a damn good MMO. What people like you are not getting is that all MMOs play the same every single one of them so what WOW has done is set the standard for what a MMO is. Bioware infused a story to it while using what is known and expected of a MMO.
WOW is just an Everquest rip off if you want to think like that. Just like all FPS have the same exact controls if the trigger button doesn’t shoot its practically dead in the water. That is a fact. SO Maybe you should play it and look at it for what it is and thats adding story to an already stale genre (for me) WOW is boring its become stale and offers nothing where TOR offers something new, a story for not just the worlds you are on but your own class story and they also offer Companions which also have their own plot going.
What you are practically doing is saying that all modern FPS are rip offs of COD because it is the most successful so automatically its a “rip off.” Where do you think it started from? COD started from “ripping off” Medal of Honor and other WW2 based games. Stop comparing it to other games.

I think, at this point, its clear that the game will be fun. I think it’s also fair to say that it will be successful – EA wouldn’t be putting it’s weight behind the game in this market (i.e. WoW-dominated market) unless it were sure it had a winner. If there’s one thing that EA has proven it’s good at, it’s business decisions.
Will it be a WoW killer? Only time will tell. I will say this: I think that this game has a shot — or at least a better shot than any game that has come out since WoW. It has a winning license, a solid publisher and a dependable development house going for it. It also has built up hype and news coverage.
As for Erthazus, I think it’s clear that he’s made his mind up already. And judging by his grammar skills (or rather, lack therof), I’m guessing it’s probably not worth arguing with him.

@11 That’s the best way to enjoy any game. Wherever your interests lie, there are legions of people who will tell you why you’re stupid for having the audacity to enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. Fuck ‘em. By all means research game previews and form an educated estimation of the game beforehand, but screw the self-important arsemouths of the world and formulate your own opinion of the game.
I’m also looking forward to giving TOR a whirl, and no amount of doomcalling from anyone will change that. If it’s a flop, it’s a flop. If it’s not, it’s not. As with any game, only time and first-hand expierience will tell.

I’m going to agree with Phoenixblight on this. Almost all games play the same, if not identical, to other games. Especially in the MMO space.
I remain optimistic about the game even if I am a bit sceptical about how it will do and how long it will last. I have no doubt in my mind that I will get some enjoyment out of it and if it only lasts a month, six months or a year, then so what?

I listened to the audio… they were obviously joking about 2025 and 500 worlds. HOWEVER, it sounded a lot more genuine when he said “last for decades” and “we want to add dozens of worlds.” Still hard to tell whether that’s an actual plan they have or just wishful thinking.

I think it will have to ‘last for decades’ to recover some of its costs. But I have had to lower my expectations of this, otherwise I WILL end up extremely disappointed.

@16, Tbh, If they had a dev cost of about $200mil, if they had 1mil+ subs (Which I think they could do) for a year they would easily make back their initial investment.
Putting sales to one side, 1mil subs paying $12 on average (exchange rates ignored for the example), that’s $144mil a year. Now obviously, I’m not an accountant so I have no idea of taxes they have to pay and advertising costs and whatnot.
Bottom line, I don’t think it would be all that difficult for them to break even.

I guess it all depends on their outgoings. Licence costs will be high, running the servers, staff wages etc wont be cheap. Especially when you think they have to bring in actors for the voice overs.
However, although it hasnt been announced, I strongly believe that this game will have micro transactions in addition to the normal monthly fee.
