Reggie explains why only the WiiU controller was shown today

Tuesday, 7th June 2011 21:55 GMT By Patrick Garratt

NoA boss Reggie Fils-Aime has explained to G4 why it was only WiiU’s controller placed in the spotlight of the console’s E3 reveal today, and not the machine itself.

“We focused on the controller, because that really is going to drive the key point of difference,” he said, speaking in a video interview you’ll find below. “Yes, the visuals are going to be beautiful – we showed just a smattering of what we can do – but what will make it new, unique, different is going to be the controller.”

The exec went on to confirm that normal Wii games won’t receive a graphics boost from being played on the new console next year – it was announced earlier that WiiU will play all Wii titles.

WiiU, the next Nintendo console, was shown for the first time in the company’s E3 press conference in LA this morning. Get full impressions and details on that here, and get a look at the interview below.

How freaking much are we supposed to pay for like 3 or 4 of those things?!?!

Shame, because it confused the crap out of a lot of people – myself included, and made us think it was just a controller for the Wii.

If the prestation is anything to go by, you’re only supposed to have one, with everybody else using a regular Wii mote or controller.

That person then has a different role in the mutltiplayer game.

@1 I gather the console box renders the frame and just streams it to controller screen, this will put restrictions on how much stuff they can process for multiple controller screens attached to one kit. Like Freek says perhaps it will be limited to one screen controller at a time.

@2 The clue was when they showed graphics you wouldnt be able to render on the wii :)

They should have shown the console proper, it really looked like just a new wii controller at first. Then they started showing material that was clearly HD, it was pretty confusing :(

So lets be real here for a moment….

Take a Game like Darksiders 2. It will come out for all 3 Consoles now including WiiU.

So the WiiU will have some extra features for Darksiders 2 on the Controller.

But are you REALLY going to buy it on WiiU?? Or are 360′s going to buy it to keep their Gamer Score going up and unlocking achievements? Or are PS3′s gamers going to buy it to Unlock their Trophies and Levels?

Unless Nintendo comes out with something Similar to Achievements or Trophies, People are going to feel invested in their particular console and not particularly want to buy the game on WiiU.

Also, I am sure Graphic Whores…will want the best looking game and if the WiiU delivers, then I can see graphic whores migrating to that.

I’m not sure it needs to directly rival the other consoles since it can essentially exist as a direct Wii upgrade with excellent exclusives.
