Third-parties interested in AR 3DS titles, says Nintendo

Wednesday, 4th May 2011 10:30 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Nintendo chief Hideki Konno has said that third-parties are interested in making AR-based titles for 3DS.

Speaking to Nintendo Power magazine, Konno said ideas were coming in from outside the company, although it does itself have a “ton of plans” for the tech.

“It seems that AR technology is going to become even more widely known and popular,” he said.

“I think it’s going to be something that people will want to play around with, whether that’s on the developer side or consumer side. It’s already generating a ton of ideas within the Nintendo development teams, and we’e been hearing ideas come from outside developers as well.”

3DS launched in February in Japan and March elsewhere.

Thanks, GoNintendo.

They should prioritise creating a browser and some semblance of an on-line presence before talking up the most useless aspect of their new handheld to the press.

AR is a HUGE potential in cash flow that has yet to be tapped. They could release Pokemon cards that are AR, gotta collect them all!!!

Also people in MTG, Bakugan, Chaotic, and other card games would go gaga for AR games where you collect the cards.

Also DC, Marvel, Star Wars and so on could make a ton of money with AR cards.

I thought the AR stuff demonstrated the most potential with the 3DS – it actually adds some gameplay possibilities unlike the 3D. 3D adds immersion, spatial awareness etc – but there is nothing it adds which means the game couldn’t just be 2D too. One point I would make though is the moving the 3DS around does tend to make keeping the 3D sweet spot nigh on impossible – so it’s a combo of tech which doesn’t mix well.
