Rumour: Dragon Age: Origins servers weekend outage caused by DRM issues

Wednesday, 13th April 2011 09:49 GMT By Stace Harman

The cause of a widespread Dragon Age: Origins weekend server outage, which left players unable to access the game’s downloadable content, is officially under investigation by BioWare. Meanwhile, speculation points to a DRM-based culprit.

Bioware commented on its forums: “Over the April 9, 2011 weekend, some of our Dragon Age: Origins content servers experienced an as yet unidentified failure.

“As a result, users began to experience error messages when attempting to access their downloadable content, indicating that the DLC was unauthorized,” it went on to say “We apologize for the inconvenience and are currently investigating and working to resolve the issue on our end.”

Ars Technica has lashed out at the “incompetence and malicious¬†neglect” it feels is responsible for both the widespread authentication problems and lack of proactivity on the issue from Bioware and EA.

Meanwhile, BioWare will perform server maintenance starting at midnight PST and will hopefully being concluded by 3.00am PST today, Wednesday April 13.

This is believed to be for website enhancement, rather than work related to the weekend outage, however.

Bioware warned: “During this time, you will not be able to log into the Social site or post on the forums.”
