Thursday, 7th April 2011 15:17 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Wargaming.net has announced that 700,000 players have taken part in the World of Tanks beta since it began last year.

The number accounts for those playing in Europe and North America.

It’s also been confirmed that 5.6 million battles took place in the beta of the FTP MMO action title, with 1.7 billion billion shells used to destroy 115 million tanks and artillery.

PCCU numbers were at 25,000.

“Comrades, we all are on the brink of an epoch-making event – World of Tanks release,” said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net. “You still have a couple of days to spend with your friends and families before the War breaks out… so spend it the right way.

World of Tanks fully launches next Tuesday, April 12.

It is a surprisingly good casual tank sim, but I think the tanks are so much like their real counterparts, that you too often end up feeling like you’re bringing a knife to a gunfight.

The terrain is also far too lopsided, most often favoring the longer range/higher penetration barrels. That’s a real shame. If the small tanks had a counter by virtue of the game rules, then it would be a lot less humiliating for all involved.

I tried levelling the tank-killer tree, because I wanted the STUG, but I gave up halfway through the Marder. I always ended up on the same hill, trying to get guys going the same way they did the game before, and improvised raids was just not an option with limited armor and underpowered engines.

Still, much better than I expected.
