Analyst: Sony could win mobile gaming race with NGP or Xperia Play

If EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich were a betting man, he would place some money on Sony possibly winning the mobile race this year with NGP or its Xperia Play phone.

Speaking with NowGamer, noting that both 3DS and iPad 2 launched in the UK today, Divnich insisted that Sony could emerge from the back of the stretch to prominence in 2011.

“If any product could do it, it would be the Xperia or NGP,” he said. “Both are amazing pieces of technology that truly evolve the mobile and portable gaming markets.”

However, in order to do this, Sony needs to supply plenty of content in order to compete with Nintendo’s 3DS.

“Only one portable gaming system has the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Link, and many more,” said Divnich. “At the end of the day, it all comes down to content, and in that domain, Nintendo is king.”

Sony has yet to set a date for NGP, and its Xperia was originally slated for an April 1 release in the UK, which it will now miss due to ““some bugs in the software.”

I’m not sure about with Xperia, but with NGP they have a chance.
Although i don’t remember SUPER HUGE franchise that can sell NGP except for Monster hunter and it’s popular in Japan only.

+ 3DS have at least PSP graphics. Nintendo also can bring Monster Hunter in to the 3DS if they want to.

So Sony is in the big trouble here.

i still havent heard any info for Xperia Play in the US so i dont see it doing anything great in US without some marketing, a solid release date, and a wide provider variety.
NGP all the way though!

I feel NGP will be a real success. I will be first on board to get one. If xperia play does well. I can really see sony making Xeria play 2 and it will be really more advance and higher spec. SO far I See Sony is really changing dramatically . Sony is making progress.

Umm define win? I can see the NGP doing well, but have a hard time believe it winning anything because of Nintendo and where the smartphone market is currently. And as for the Xperia I really doubt that thing is going to be popular.

Now PlayStation Suite if done correctly could become a great success since that brand being on other phones could attract a lot of customers.

Personally, I think the release of two similiar products by the same company at nearly the same time is a mistake and may ultimately hurt Sony. Just my opinion.

Having said that, I’ll buy a PSP2/NGP if it’s $249USD or less. Not interested in the other product at all.

thats not actualy the content imo.
they also have quality content, albeit for a to some extent different audience. nintendo just has a 25 year old strong history of important ips of their core content (core not aimed to the core vs casual use of the term). simply everybody knows mario, link and all the others since decades.. not saying theyre not as good as thought, not at all, just that it adds to the sales.

didnt the PSP sell like 50 million worldwide?
i wouldnt call that losing tbh, even if the DS sold over twice of that. the PSP had a different demographic than the DS, if im not mistaken, so thats still quite an achievement

and lets be honest, NGP ist the better handheld than the 3DS. 3D ist just a stupid gimmick on that thing, i hated it and turned it off.

Agreed. and yes, 60 million.
NGP will do everything the ipod touch and 3DS does (minus 3D) and then some. The Xperia Play will do everything every android phone does and then some. Why would they not be successful.

@ DR.G the reason for releasing similar products at the same to close time is not what they are doing. Sure, they both play games. But Xperia Play is a phone first with a gaming handheld fused into it. The NGP is a multimedia device with gaming as its main concern.

^I know but mass consumers are dumb and get confused easily. It just seems, to me, like Sony couldn’t make up their mind so they made two seperate products. I don’t know…..I’m hoping PSP2 is a HUGE success so we’ll see.

It sold for 67 million units, not just 60. For a non sucking non Nintendo handheld thats actually a really GREAT achievement.

The only thing that sucks is software. Monster hunter third sold for 4.11 milion units and thats a bit… well compared to Nintendo quite SHITTY.

@12 it’s roughly at 67M and DS is close to 147M yeah pukemon that’s more than double what PSP has sold. And 3D is a gimmick you didn’t say that about PS3′s 3D capabilities but a nintendo console 3D is a gimmick? you are one lousy prick to think hypocritical.

#14

Gekidami

^ Except that the PS3′s 3D isnt being sold as the whole consoles reason to be. It isnt called the ‘PS3D’.

@SOMI, well, PSP is Sony’s first attempt in handhelds, Nintendo at the start could never sell with such a number.

65+ million units is stil a huge success for the first handheld and with their price cut they can try to sell it near 100 million.

NGP have power to outsell 3DS pretty easily if they will have killer apps this year

@15 they have 32M left which looks unlike,y with 3DS on the market and DS to have a price cut, by the time PSP does hit 100M ( if it hits) DS will be sailing past 165M or 170M.

#19

@17 if PS3 was mainly about 3D sony fans wouldn’t call it a gimmick.

PS3D… Classic! I’m pretty sure Sony’s marketing people are hitting themselves for not thinking of this name for PS3. Maybe PS4D for the future?

“time PSP does hit 100M ( if it hits) DS will be sailing past 165M or 170M.”
DS can’t pass 165 or 170. Thats too much, because DS popularity is slipping when there is a 3DS on the horizon.

“they have 32M left which looks unlike,y”

i said near 100 million. They have chance to do that.

@21 GBA sold an additional 20M+ after DS debuted, and as of now DS is selling about 170,000 every week with 3DS out,it’s already treading towards 150M. It will have a price cut soon and games are still coming out for it, and come this Christmas it’s bound to sell over 400,000+ per week near the date.

I bought my GBC on release day of GBA when I was 10.

PSP in my eyes was amazing at the time, the games were close to the consoles at the time imo, Vice City stories was an amazing GTA game with brilliant visuals. Burnout Legends was the shit, Wipeout was back and was good again, PoP was great on PSP as well.

Either way I know the NGP won’t fail to impress.

I want Xperia play but I don’t really want to spend anymore than £25 a month on a contract

If I can find a line to wait in, I think NGP is gonna be the first hardware device I ever stood in line for!

it’s directionless, and going after both audiences seems desperate to say the least.. it was never a good idea.

this time around Nintendo also have quite a decent device in terms of graphical power, so if anything it will only be more tough for psp. being able to run UE3 (and that’s plus 3d) is more than enough for something you carry around in your pocket.

consoles themselves never decide anyway, software is always everything. due to a combo of first party Nintendo titles + strong third party support like Capcom or Ubi, 3ds is likely going to absolutely pummel it.

also, I’m not quite getting the iPod equation.. just taking into account storage and distribution is already enough to make them uncomparable.

The 3DS is more powerful than the PSP, but I doubt we’ll ever see better looking games because of the 3D effect, especially from Nintendo who haven’t really ever been at the front for graphics in their own games, but they may look good artistically to some people.

Hopefully the PS Suite eventually gets PSP & PS2 games, that would be fucking awesome! If the PS3 gets the PS Suite it could be a good way to cash in on PS2 emulation.

“so if anything it will only be more tough for psp. being able to run UE3″
If 3DS can support Unreal engine that does not mean it can support UE3.
If you are reffering to the Ubisoft, they have only one license with the UE 2.5 and it’s old as fuck and ugly aswell. It’s not even UE 3.0 .

#32

Crysis

Is the engine Epic showed at GDC UE3.5, Or simply what UE3 is potentially capable of? Everything I’ve seen using UE3 has thick & blocky characters, Homefront maybe an exception but the graphics in that are very outdated so that’s not the best example.

that was a typo though yeah, the modified version of UE2. I got used to writing it, since ‘UE3′ became so widely popular.

not really, it’s up there with the best visuals on Xbox/GCN. it’s more than enough for these games anyway, doesn’t change the fact that Nintendo will have some graphically impressive looking titles this time around, unlike with the DS.

one license? point being about device capabilities. ie someone like Capcom has their own tech.

I don’t think it’s impossible because 3ds isn’t making out-of-this-world sales.
In every case i prefer ngp and psp to 3ds and ds, i don’t care about sales.
Edit:
about 3ds performances, samurai warriors hasn’t a lot of enemies on the screen, samurai warriors psp(2006, not a late game) have more, this explains well the difference between 3ds(less polygons but a lot of shaders) and psp(more polygons but no effects):

What race? The only race is for each company to:

A) make a return on its investment
B) create a path for future purchases (first party games)
C) build a consumer-base for future hardware

As long as whatever gadget makes them money (preferably lots) then the company will be be happy. If it dominates the market, then bonus but each company (especially Japanese companies) look at the long-term profit view first and foremost.
