Nintendo doesn’t want to work with garage devs, says Reggie

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has said the company has no interest with working with garage-based developers.

“I would separate out the true independent developer versus the hobbyist,” Fils-AIme told Gamasutra.

“We are absolutely reaching out to the independent developer. Where we’ve drawn the line is we are not looking to do business today with the garage developer. In our view, that’s not a business we want to pursue.”

His comments follow a GDC keynote from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata that seemed to attack the app store dev culture Apple invented following the launch of the first iPhone.

Fils-Aime also dismissed any suggestions that a Wii successor was about to emerge from the Kyoto-based company, but did seem to hint at various ways of bringing the console to a wider audience, including a price-cut.

“The Wii has a long life in front of it. We’re still sitting at $199. There are a variety of marketing tools at our disposal.”

I guess that rules out developers like Jason Rohrer and Jonathan Blow then.

Rather snobbish of you Reggie.

hats why wiiware is even a biggest wasteland than PSN, without gems like super meat boy, limbo & retro rampage city.

That’s the sound of Nintendo disappearing down the plughole due to their outdated software model. Sure, they shift hardware but no one’s developing for Wii or DS and they’re not going to encourage anyone with that attitude either. If I had shares in Ninty I’d be flogging them…

Before kicking off on a heated response I think the terms ‘indie’ and ‘garage’ are a little indistinct.

WiiWare has seen some smaller stuff and will see Retro City Rampage (according to current information). RCR looks like a pretty ‘garage’ production to me – which is not to say it’ll be bad (far from it, it looks fantastic). What about Cave Story and La Mulana? Both were originally very garage products – tiny teams, modest production values. Cave Story was a single-person project.

Then again, Nintendo and the single-man title “Bob’s Game” cause a bit of a fuss when Nintendo refused to certify it.

I’m not sure Nintendo have expressed themselves with as much care as they might. The sentiment could be taken in a way they didn’t mean. Facebook/iOS/Android have shown there’s a lucrative market for these ‘garage’ type productions and some can make some serious money. That said, Nintendo have been quite verbal about their opinion of that sort of product as a whole.

That’s an insult for indie developers! Thumb down for Nintendo!

Nintendo are hypocrites, they make garage quality games themselves, look at Super Mario Brothers & Pokemon, I may enjoy them but they’re incredibly basic games.

If you think Pokemon is a basic game you’ve never played one.

Obvious, there are a lot of incredible indie platformers, if nintendo users starts playing something new nintendo will have to spend a lot of money on new creations.
Yeah because you think that it’s easy or cheap to make new characters? How many hours are necessary for a new gameplay idea instead?
Super mario galaxy is completely different from other mario games, why didn’t they create new characters/worlds/ etc? Simple, max profit with minimum costs(reused character design, model, some gameplay mechanics etc), tipical nintendo policy….

Anybody remember Bob’s game?

Thats how nintendo treats garage developers.

@10, It is, the hardest thing about it’s design would be thinking up new pokemon, which are JUST sprites, all the mathematical stuff like leveling up can be solved with simple algorithms, it’s one of the most basic modern games, given the right tools, a programmer with little experience can create a pokemon game.

I’m an indie developer and I’ve completely given up on working on Nintendo hardware. They flat out refuse to grant a licence to anyone working from a home office. It’s stupid. I’ve worked with Nintendo in the past and even designed games directly for them yet choosing to work from home means I’m no longer good enough.

I’ll always be a Nintendo fan but they’re not on the radar for me as a developer any more.

Man, just think how much better your games would be if you rented premises, John!

It’s silly isn’t it? Nintendo are just using that rule to filter out amateur developers, but lots and lots of pro-developers are going indie now and working from home.

I think they just don’t want the hassle of working out who is worth dealing with.

Wow. What a bunch of out of date cunts.

I love the Wii, but if they think they, can win using the gimmick card forever, they’re deluded.

They certainly appear to be the least flexible of all of them, and by quite a margin. With downloadable games being a bigger thing on the 3DS you’d think they’d be wanting to attract the most creative people to make the most of the new hardware, regardless of where they happen to be sitting while they do it. Instead they appear to be going out of their way to piss them off.

By way of contrast we’ve been approached directly by Sony on several occasions inviting us to pitch ideas & concepts for PSN.

@21 You thumbs up runs on substandard hardware and refuses to take advantage of modern anti-aliasing effects and GPU acceleration! It is clearly an inferior product!

How am I doing? I’m just trying to fit in with the current crowd. Was that convincing enough?

Just sounds like Nintendo getting a bit squeaky buttocked about the handheld market – please come and develop games for our hardware proper developer types, and come away form that free for all nasty ol apple thing that’s making all the cash…
