EA repeats NPD data crticisms

Tuesday, 15th March 2011 00:09 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Tiffany Steckler, EA’s corporate communications executive, has said NPD sales data fails to accurately represent the state of the industry.

“Using NPD data for video game sales is like measuring music sales and ignoring something called iTunes,” Steckler CNN

“We see NPD’s data as a misrepresentation of the entire industry.”

Industry analyst Michael Pachter reacted to the claim with incredulity, calling it a “gross overstatement”.

“EA saying physical game sales don’t matter is like Best Buy saying television sales don’t matter,” he said.

NPD’s Anita Frazier was puzzled by the comment, pointing out that the company had recently begun publishing a quarterly digital sales report, something other territories are also beginning to adopt.

NPD is reportedly ramping up its digital sale data reports, amid criticism from digital distribution outlets.

Earlier this month, EA claimed that 40 percent of all sales are now digital.

Well, NPD is doing their “misrepresentations” gratis despite hinting several times that they would prefer to just stop doing them, or at least stop giving them away in broad, open press releases.

I’m not calling NPD martyrs – no doubt they benefit from the publicity – but if EA has a problem with their wicked ways, perhaps they could stop whining about free research and do a better job themselves. (That suggestion is rhetorical. Of course they couldn’t. Or rather, wouldn’t.)

1: Maybe EA doesn’t see the need for “free research”. Their problem is the investors (which is obviously why that nutcase Pachter was the first to comment), and if investors get the wrong ideas thanks to NPD numbers being inaccurate, that’s an obvious disadvantage for EA and any other publicly traded publisher.
