Activision: Facebook and mobile don’t provide a large opportunity for customer growth at the moment

Activision expects more growth through expansion of its existing games portfolio, but doesn’t see as much of an opportunity in the mobile and social games market.

Speaking during the Reuters Global Media Summit yesterday, CEO Bobby Kotick said as the consumer base continues to grow, Activision’s franchises like WoW and COD will still have the ability to reach new players, while there is less revenue potential in mobile, or Facebook games.

“The place where you have the opportunities for growth is within the communities of franchises we control,” said Kotick. “We don’t view the App Store as a really big opportunity for dedicated games.

“It’s a different question assessing [social games] as a business opportunity. Right now we don’t see an opportunity for us to participate in that market.”

In contrast, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello told the Reuters Global Media Summit on Monday that his company is investing heavily in mobile and Internet-based games.

Guess this means there’s won’t be a Call of Duty or WoW-based farming game on Facebook anytime soon, which is good.

If your main buisiness model is selling 60 dollar games with hundred million dollar production and marketing budgets, then no obviously you woulden’t see the social and mobile space as much of oportunity.
But I bet Zynga sees things differently.

I think Facebook is cornered by Zynga, but when you look at the cost/benefit of all those small games, there’s definitely a lot of money to be made, with a lot more room to fail on creative freedom and what not.

Maybe it isn’t for a big corporation that has to split its efforts between AAA and smalltime, but anyone who wants to run a startup certainly has a shot at striking it rich like Popcap or any of those guys.

All Rovio did was copy a banal flash game concept and add birds and piggies, and I think they might be swimming in dough right now.
