Rumour – Microsoft in talks to bring online cable-like service to 360

360slim

Reuters is reporting that Microsoft are in talks with media companies about bringing an online subscription cable-like service to Xbox 360.

Not many details are known, but the company is thought to be planning a pay monthly service for “a ‘virtual cable operator’ delivered over the Internet.”

It’s also thought Microsoft are going to bring out “content silos” for premium US channels HBO and Primetime.

Reuters’ sources say any service won’t be arriving for at least another year.

Microsoft have refused to comment.

In the UK, the only thing similar to a cable service for Xbox 360 is Sky Player, which provides live TV and catch-up services for its channels.

Thanks, Gizmodo.

They already have something like this for Canadian Service Provider Telus through Optik tv(Fibre Optics, For 5 bucks a month you can get a app Called Optik Telus TV and it basically turns your Xbox into one of the Optik TV Boxes and works with your Xbox 360/media center remote pretty cool but what i don’t know is if you need to have Xbox Live Gold For it to work.

It’s coming for 100%

The reason is simple: Google TV

and i’m sure that Sony will have Google TV on the PS3 because they are already working with Google on that with their Bravias.

You make a very good point, Erthazus. Microsoft are going to have to do a lot better than Sky Player if they want to compete in this area.

We are five to six years into this generation, and the companies are making plans for what will happen with their current consoles years into the future. Haven’t gotten used to that yet.

If Microsoft can pull HBO for a reasonable price than I will buy an Xbox. I been on the fence about cancelling my current cable company and that would be all I need to finally do it.

Would hope Sony beats them to the punch though since I already have a PS3.

LOLtelevision.

Can’t think of the last time I sat down to watch a show when a TV network decided I should. The entire concept is archaic, old technology.

Why would I do that when there are a tonne of services out there that allow me to stream or download this stuff whenever I want to, for a minimal price that makes cable look like daylight robbery? And little to no ads to boot.

LOLtelevision.

We already have this in Australia with foxtel, but we Aussies have quotas on our broadband so noone can really afford it unless they find a good unlimited deal.
Not to mention that not only do we need a foxtel for xbox360 sub, but a Gold sub stacked above it!
Atleast when Sony does shit like that, we don’t need a damn PS+ sub, not being fanboyish here, more realistic .

Can someone dig up my past comments of me talking about this happening. M$ is so predictable. They want the 360 to be your set top box so badly and LIVE your HBO. Saw this coming 4 years ago.
