Open source Kinect drivers let you use it on your PC

Looks like a couple of different folks have found a way for Kinect owners to use the device on their PC.
First up is the NUI Group, which are apparently working on an open source SDK and Windows driver for Kinect and plans on releasing it once the $10K donation bucket is brimming with funds.
But there’s another on out there too from a fella named Hector Martin, who has his code released onto the wild blue internet within three hours of Kinect’s European launch.
Granted, Martin’s code will only allow you to display visuals with Kinect on your PC, but it’s still fun playing with tech.
Watch the video of Martin’s accomplishment below, courtesy of Engadget, along with two videos from NUI Group below it.

This is all a little meaningless outside of having some robotics applications. What’s really needed is for someone to develop a driver which can do skeletal mapping, or tell your hands / head / etc from the rest of the blob that the camera is picking up.
Still, would be uber cool for robot stuff.

Its a start, I suppose. For me, as gaming controller, Kinect doesn’t really impress. But hooked up to a PC, or in other applications besides gaming, its got a lot of potential.

Well being a PC user who has connected Wiimotes, Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers to his PC already for various reasons, I’ve been waiting for this for a LONG time. Kinect will make my HTPC much better.
