Sonly looking into reports of PS3 firmware 3.50 disabling legit third-party USB adapters

Thursday, 23 September 2010 17:26 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

According to some PS3 users on the PlayStation forums, certain third-party controllers no longer work on their PS3 since the 3.50 update was applied.

The firmware update, which was released on Tuesday, not only allwed 3D Blu-ray movies to be played on PS3, but according to users, after applying the patch certain USB devices have stopped working.

While some of the devices were not legitimate, apparently, some were. Users are reporting that certain MadCatz controllers, and even some licensed Guitar Hero controllers, are no longer functioning. Same with PS2 to Ps3 controller converters.

According to a consumer alert posted by Sony on September 21, the same day the newest firmware update went live: “SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

“SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products.”

Sony has told VG247 it’s “looking into it” and will get back with us.

Thanks, Mike.

@7 I’m not understanding how those are stoping you. The other os was optional and honestly most people never used it. It was just a good optional feature that doesn’t hinder the quality of the system. The backwards compatiability isn’t even a big deal seeing how 360 isn’t even backwards compatiable. And with millions of ps2′s lingering out there does it matter? Once ps2 stops turning profit then you’ll see either 1 of 2 things a patch enabling all ps3′s outside of the 20,60,and 80gb series allowing ps2 games to be played again. Or the developers will start distributing digital copies of the games granted they don’t make a hd remake of it. And what about playstation plus is a problem? An optional service that when you become a member not only are you given exclusive content and demos but make ps one, psn, and minis free for you. And still optional. What issues have sony really warranted?

If you wanted BC your cheap ass should have bought a PS3 1st year. As it stands my $600 PS3 was well worth the price back then and even more now. You miss features that are gone now and want to cry? Really the Other OS is stopping you from getting a PS3 now!? Does the 360 have that option moron. The PS3 is still BC with PS1 games. It has a way stronger BC list than 360 does from the “original” XBOX.

So shut your mouth. I’m so tired of ass holes like you making excuses why you don’t have a PS3 when it simply comes down to the fact that you just dislike SONY as a company in whole. Proof is in the pudding with those lame ass excuses. OMG everyone he’s letting the other OS option stop him from enjoying the best games this gen like UC2,GOW3,GT5, and so on. You’re an idiot and yes I’m attacking you because I’m sick of your bullshit.

STFU and buy a PS3 already or stay your cheap ass on the 360 which I’m sure you’re on your 3rd system at least.

The irony in what you said Tea is that the PS3 is cheaper(less expensive) then the xb360 is.

If I was to do it over again Callum, I would have bought a PS3, and not xb360. I may have still bought the Wii, I have a lot of GC games, I like the VC/Wiiware, and I got my moneys worth out of Wii Sports.

I would have skiped the xb360.

If I already owned a xb360(like you do), I would not buy the PS3. It isn’t about what company does what system, or even what games each has. In the end they are both just about mirror images of each other.

My friends that ask me what one to buy, I recomend PS3.

There is just very little difference.

And before Tea jumps with features that most gamers won’t use, or talks about the great exclusive PS3 libary … I would just like to remind my spirited friend that he himself just got online (LIVE Gold) to play a few of the xb360 exclusives.

Unless your a freakish gamer or have lots of cash to spend, I’d remind myself that one system is all you really need.

Besides the buzzword going forward is Multiplatform anyways. If your system doesn’t have it yet, wait a bit. Aside from a handful of exclusives of course.

I got LIVE because I wanted to play with Reask (and have not yet since I had it so far). The more I use LIVE the more I see that its just PSN with cross game chat. There are a lot of myths of LIVE and its not all cracked up like it is by everyone….But you will read my review soon enough.

My rant was about him not getting a PS3 because he has a chip against SONY as a company as whole. SONY may be shady assholes but so is M$,APPLE,Nintendo and every other major corporation under the sun. Why deny yourself great games like Uncharted or GOW. And no I don’t care what any of you say you can’t get the kind of experience on XBOX360…..YOU CAN’T AND NEVER WILL.

Its been almost 5 years now and a PS3 is a must have console if you claim to be a gamer and want to be taken seriously really. The time of only have one console was like in the first 2-3 years when the consoles were seen as equal, but the PS3 has separated itself from the competition with MOVE,3D GAMES,Blu-Ray,multi media capabilities, and games like UC2,LBP2,GT5,Heavy Rain.

You have a $300 XBOX360 and a $300 PS3 today. You’re telling me with the cons and pros of both systems today you would pick a 360 over a PS3???? You’re fucking nuts!?
And thats the mind set Callum should have if he’s a grown adult who can afford to buy one…..not just buy one….afford is the key word. If I was him and I could afford it then there wouldn’t be a second of hesitation.

The $400 PS3 MOVE bundle totally negates any reason to own a Wii or 360…PERIOD!…fucking PERIOD man. The $400 MOVE PS3 bundle is a Wii,XBOX360, and PS3 rolled into one machine. Now tell me I’m lying. Sure you can’t play Mario or Halo but so what. SONY’s 1st party games handles that easily. Substitute Halo with KZ2,3 RFOM 1,2. Substitute Mario with Ratchet and call it a day.

With that logic I just presented to all of you if you know someone who wants to buy either console but wants the most well rounded balanced console that can do “EVERYTHING” you know the answer to give them. And please if I’m lying about anything I have said so far correct me and present the truth….but you can’t and I will get bitched at for this. Moral of the rant Callum is a XBOT plain and simple and his excuses hold no validity except for his own bias.

    THE END :D

I was just ribbing ya about LIVE is all. If Gamefly ever sends me a copy of Reach my boys and I will be more then happy to game with you.

The trouble with reask is that like a lot of our friends floating around here, there are half way into next weeks time zone compared to us. And to me your west coast. I am 3hrs ahead of you, and right now its tomorrow over there already.

Also just for the record I am gonna point out, I said when people ask me what system to buy(them not already owning either) I say PS3.

However if you have one system already(unless its only the Wii), I wouldn’t bother buying another one.

    #24 4 years ago
  25. theevilaires

I have homes on both coast O.G. so as of now we live during the same time zone. Reask is 5 hours ahead of us. I fully understand his time schedule. As a matter of fact I’m even still woke when he gets up to start his day ;)

And I do the same thing for people who don’t have any next gen system (NOW). Believe it or not I use to tell people “4 years ago” that if they couldn’t afford a PS3 they should just buy a 360 for now. It made much more sense back then when the 360 had the better framer-rate games, superior graphics, and better system features.

But that was 4-5 years ago. Look how fast time flies man. Just yesterday I remember all over the net and in game shops people saying they don’t need 1080P,Blu-Ray,and HDMI. Now look at us we can get away from 1080P 40″+ HDTVs and now all I hear is we don’t need 3D gaming :D .

With a blink of an eye the next gen consoles will be here fully 3D ready and the PS3 will be among them using 3D too and the people who were saying the same crap about Blu-Ray and 1080P will appreciate the PS3 even more when they can’t afford to take that early adopter leap into next gen. Callum, I once again address you. I don’t know why the hell you’re so timid for, but you are the one doing a major disservice to yourself by being so stubborn.

See I was called an elitist because I stuck with sony from day one. But it wasn’t because of fan boyism it was because when I buy tech I buy it to last especially when it comes to dishing out hundreds. My overall opinion was the ps3 is capable of more. But a lot of my friends kept ranting about the 360. And I was saying patience will leave me satisfied in the end. Just a year later and BOOM all the talk of ps3 having no games disappeared. Every said “exclusive” for 360 just became multi-plat. Halo fable and gears just wasn’t where it was at for me. They looked like polished ps2 games. And though polish is nice I new there was better. So I kept letting all my friend knock me dog me and call me a fan. But now its turned around all they can claim for xbox glory is cross game chat…. but they have to pay for that and to game. I am loving the fact I stuck with one console and didn’t get suckered into buying 3 plus a subscription. Now I got a system that does everything the others do better. I am so at peace with my decision and also have more money thanks to my decision. Soon exclusives will hit again but I know which system that’ll be for. Its already starting with the hd remixes next its going to be major games

Just came off live there now Tea.
I put a message in the halo thread earlier today telling folks what time I would be on.
Its going to happen and hopefully this weekend.
    I look forward to it.
Any way now that you have the year sub I intend to get in to a good few games with you over the year hopefully.
Heaven knows I could do with the help improving my K/D ratios. :D

Any way you said(and I quote)

Its been almost 5 years now and a PS3 is a must have console if you claim to be a gamer and want to be taken seriously really. The time of only have one console was like in the first 2-3 years when the consoles were seen as equal, but the PS3 has separated itself from the competition with MOVE,3D GAMES,Blu-Ray,multi media capabilities, and games like UC2,LBP2,GT5,Heavy Rain.

I hear what you are saying about the console thing and realise you were venting your opinion at what was said.
But all told as OG has stated a lot of features on PS3 are cool but most folks don’t give a damn or like me wouldn’t know how to use them. :)

BC for me is not an issue as my PS2 is upstairs plugged out a long time now so if I want to I can just hook it up but never feel the need.

You said live is PSN with cross chat and you are not far wrong I suppose but Its a big deal to the kids that use it.
My one was in a party today talking to her mates who were playing different games.
Sounds like nothing but a big thing to this generation who expect nothing less if you know what I am saying.

I am playing reach atm because I am enjoying it and nothing else, if it was on the PS3 or 360 it would make no difference to me at this stage as I have both.

With yourself sometimes I get the impression that you find it hard to like the 360 and look for its faults first rather than just playing games on it.

Is the PS3 better made? Probably
Is it Quieter? definitely(f**k me how did they get it so quite)
Does it do games better? IMO no and no.
It does them as well as the 360 though IMO.

Of the 5 games you mention in your post only 1 interests me and that’s UC.
I tried HR, GOW demo, LBP, and had no interest in any of them whichever platform they were on.
Games, like films and music are personal things really.
As you said to me about RPG games a lot of time goes in to them and if you are not in to them then better left alone.

You are a passionate Sony supporter imo but a gamer first so keep up the good fight but enjoy the 360 for what it claims to do and forget about the other shit like BR and whatever( I put that in as I couldn’t think of anything else:( ).

I love hooking up a new game and enjoying it if its good and Multi on reach atm is doing that for me.
When Socom comes out on the 3 I have no doubt I will be checking it out as well.
For me its happy days for gamers and that’s all that counts.

Some people sold older consoles to do that and 2. It’s a feature that is perfectly possible to put on, just like in the MGS4 Ver PS3s. Imagine disconecting and conecting HDMI cables, getting wired controllers for PS2, memory cards all over again. Please don’t be stupid and if you’re not ok with supporting the backwards coming back (remember SEGA rumors and others) shut the fuck up and enjoy your damn 60GB PS3s and PS2s without coming to spit your bullshit to others.

I’ll never understand Fanboyism. Why if you own one system do you have to hate the other? Both systems have their merits and detraction’s.

The fanboy is brainwashed and able to consider his XXXXXX (hardware, software, car, etc…) as the most valuable member of his family. The feeling of chivalry each time he fight for XXXXX (the brand) and, by the same way, the acknowledgment of his blood brothers (other fanboys) is really something (like a real honor). It’s quite easy to become a fanboy, you just have peek a brand (electronic, car, boat, horse, etc) and feel like you’re a part of it (by buying one or more product, but just one is ok). Then you just have to invest some emotion in your purchase (first big purchase, first salary, favorite color, first coming out, etc) and it’s done. You’re not seeing your new toy, pet, car as a toy, pet, car anymore, it’s and extend of yourself.

How to know if ‘fanboy you are’, it’s when a lot of guy says that you are ONE and when you answer that you are NOT (with the feeling of the guy thinking that there is too much car on the wrong side of the road). I did know this feeling very well, i was a PS fanboy for a long time. I don’t know what release me from this feeling, maybe it’s a package : 2 YLOD (1 with a firmware update), cost of the repair for a YLOD, multi firmware bugs (game freeze, etc..), remove BC, remove OtherOS, Sony acting as arrogant as Microsoft. By the way, i feel free now.
