Relic talks Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, hands out screens

warhammerspacemarine

Relic’s Raphael van Lierop has said Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, is nothing like “other” space marine games.

This is because Games Workshop’s 40K universe pre-dates all other games with hulking marines in space, supposedly.

Granted, Dune came out in the 60s and had space marines, but they were nothing like the big fellas in WH40K, nor are they like the Colonial Marines from the 1986 film Aliens. They do however, pre-date the marines in DOOM, and Lierop says as much in the video.

The setting made popular through tabletop games, is around 23 years of age (1987), and the third-person actioner is a “fresh take” on the universe, Lierop told Gamespot in a video interview – making this the first non-strategy, non-MMO, and non-FPS game for the series.

It’s been a long time coming, that’s for sure, but finally it’s coming early next year.

Hit this link to watch the video, where Lierop also chats about fan service, the working on an established IP, and chainsword combat.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine is to be made available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The PC version will use Steamworks for as its DRM instead of GFWL (thanks, Blue).

We also have some new screens of the game for you below.

Waaagh!

WOO! hope that it’s not only marines & orks in this though, that’s my biggest worry, even if is only marines & orks in SP, they should add other races ionto multi player at the very least

The leaked video didn’t look all that promising, but hopefully they’ve had a long time to tune it up.

With all the different classes and weapons and all out warfare, that whole universe would be an obvious candidate for a squadbased game, but since those sometimes require the ability to coordinate a little bit (above-70 IQ stuff) I’m not gonna hold my breath.

GFWL/Ubisoft OSP = No buy, fascist cunts.

Here I thought Starship Troopers pre-dated Dune by about ten years… still I suppose their Space Marines are Blue.

@3 Exactly. Thing is, the whole “space marine” origins thing could be tuned into a dissertation. I think the marines pre-date others comment was meant for DOOM though – and he was only talking WH40K pre-dating games with space marines, I believe. Not literature and TV. I added a bit more in there for clarification. But yeah – weren’t the guys in the 70s version of BSG considered marines as well?

@2, the old leaked video was from the game being developed by THQ Australia, ultimately it was canned & then Relic re-started it from the ground up which appears to be for the best

@5 Oooh, I had no idea.

I was very disappointed in Dawn of War II, but Relic are definitely great.

@4. I’m sure, if we go back far enough, there were Marines on the boats at Trafalgar talking about landing Marines on the moon one day.

@7 Surely! We can probably even go further back than that! :)

@6, i agree, i loved soulstorm & still often play it, Dawn of War 2 though, pretty much killed everything i loved about the original, maybe they should have just used the textures, graphics etc, but kept the style relatively the same, but that’s just my opinion

Who came first is less important than the lore, and IMHO WH40K’s lore is second to none.

@9 The one thing that’s completely absurd though, is Relic actually breaking the widescreen of the original Dawn of War with their final patch, and not even bothering to fix it afterwards.

Now we’re stuck with two black bars. It just seems like a mean thing to do.

They’re widescreen-nazis – No widescreen for you!

i have a 16 by 9 screen(widescreen) monitor, it’s more than likely your resoloution settings, try changing it to 1366 x 768
(EDITS)—it does run on widescreen but not in the right resoloution, i found 1024 x 768 runs it (albeit not terribly well)-but it does (kinda) run in widescreen, so either put up with the black lines or have it a little stretched(i played through the whole campaign without noticing)-i know, it’s amazing[that i actually played the whole campaign]

@13 Nah, it’s a fact.

As far as I’ve been able to make out, they originally introduced widescreen support for all resolutions with an earlier patch, and then they kept screwing it up with the subsquent ones, and with the current build you’d be very lucky to have your rig running widescreen at all.

People are pretty outraged about it, especially since none of the sleuths have been able to work out a fix for it. Changing the .ini directly does nothing.

Clearly they just fucked up the code.
