Tippl: Activision working on used market initiatives

Activision COO Thomas Tippl has outlined the strategies which “have worked best so far” in tackling lucrative used game market, as well as mentioning the company has further ideas to gain a foothold in this area.
Speaking in the company’s Q1 financial conference call on Thursday, Tippl said the publisher was “still evaluating” plans for now.
“We are still evaluating various possibilities for greater participation in the used-games business.”
He then added that, although current strategies work well, the company have other ideas which it will reveal soon.
“What’s been working the best so far is providing additional content and therefore limiting the supply of used games. So that’s a proven strategy that we will continue. And any other initiatives, we will be talking about when we get closer to it.”
His comments echo what Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said back at E3, when he admitted the company was looking into doing something with the pre-owned market, adding $500 million worth of revenue could be made out of it for the firm.
Thanks, MCV.

My concern with all this used game business, is how will they be able to tell a store bought used game as opposed to a rental from say… blockbuster.
So if you rent a game, soon you wont be able to play it online, only the SP.
Which clearly will cut rentals down, and means rental stores wont buy as many games – more lost revenue.
Id like to see what the final gameplan is so I stop making up scenarios

I’d say extending the lifespan of your games by making them better and longer after launch is one of the more positive ideas so far.
EA just punishes you with a surcharge.

Activision will be one of the first publisher who will handle console games like pc games: with registered serial-keys. Once its registered…you cant sell your game.
When this happends and it will happen every other publisher will follow. Its only that nobody want to be the first big asshole.

Used sales can help new sales too. I buy many new games but I buy them safe in the knowledge that the £39.99 games I’m buying (about 3 a month) I can play for a bit and sell on at £20 each fairly soon if I do not wish to keep them.
If I can’t sell them on as “used” and get half the money back for them, I’d have to be more discerning and buy fewer (probably half) as many games new as I do now.
