Alien Swarm hits Steam next week for free

alienswarm

Valve has announced Alien Swarm, based on the Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, will be made available for free on Steam Monday, July 19.

Created by Black Cat Studios, the modders who created Alien Swarm two years ago and are now employees at Valve, the Source-powered four-player co-op game is a top-down shooter, and players can choose between eight characters and four different classes, using 40 different weapons and equipment to take down massive loads of aliens – or swarms if you will.

The folks behind the game found time to finish the new version of the game up with updated graphics and whatnot between shifts working on Portal 2 and the Left 4 Dead series, and along with the game for free, folks will be able to download the modding tools and code from the title as well.

Sounds rather cool.

Thanks, BigDownload.

“Valve has announced Alien Swarm, the Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, will be made available for free on Steam Monday, July 19.”

I think this is a little misleading. This is a new version based upon the UT2k4 mod, with updated graphics and whatnot. The post makes it sound like it’s some direct port of the original, which it isn’t.

Me being pedantic aside, I can’t wait to download this, as I was a big fan of the original. Free stuff!

@1 Ok. Thanks. Had no idea of the entire history of the game.
