NPD June 2010: Xbox 360 second only to DS, RDR moves 963K units

new360

NPD has released June sales figures for the US, showing big Xbox 360 hardware increases and more blistering numbers for Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption.

However, the industry as a whole was down 6 percent for the month year-on-year.

Industry sales total $1.10 billion, down 6 percent

Overall videogame sales fell 6 percent in the US during June, despite the debut of Microsoft’s new Xbox 360 model, with accessory, hardware, and software sales totaling $1.10 billion compared to $1.17 billion year-on-year.

NPD once again attributed the decline to the decrease in portable hardware and software sales.

Nintendo still dominates US hardware sales

Handhelds may have contributed to the overall decline in the market, but DS was tops again in June, moving 510.7K units, 127K more than May.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the best selling console for the month, moving 451.7K units thanks in part to the sleeker 250Gb model introduced at E3 last month. June was also the second-largest hardware month for non-holiday sales for Microsoft since 2007, when Halo launched.

Nintendo took the third spot with Wii at 422.5K, and Sony came fourth with 304.8K PS3s moved.

PSP sold 121K units, which is 61.6K more than May.

Here’s the full chart:

  1. DS -510.7K
  2. Xbox 360 – 451.7K
  3. Wii – 422.5K

  5. PSP 121.0K

When compared with May figures, all formats realized a unit sales increase.

June 2010 hardware sales rose 5 percent year-on-year, up to $401.7M from $382.8M in June 2009.

The Big Three respond

The hardware manufacturers issued their usual statements in the figures’ wake, with MS pointing out it has outsold PS3 for five years, Sony fixing on year-over-year growth and Nintendo bragging over Super Mario Galaxy 2 passing the 1 million sold mark.

Well it looks like Rockstar SD didn’t even break even with the sales thats a pity because the game is fantastic. Hopefully they make a profit with future DLCs and hopefully they release Episodes like GTA IV.

@3

It was stated with the developer they needed to sell atleast 5 million units to break even with the cost of development and the Rockstar North merging with Rockstar SD.

Edit: 4 million

Looks lke the new 360 Slim had little effect on sales atall seeing as theres an obvious raise from last month on all platforms.

It means I’m able to make graphs and put them on the internet. This gives me a sense of power.

By comparison, what the hell happened to Mario Galaxy 2? Red Dead’s done 2.5million in the time it’s taken Mario to do a million. Not a failure by any definition and I’m sure it’ll keep selling, but given how many Wiis there are out there wouldn’t you have expected it to have done much better?

Big fat +1 to that. Seems like people don’t give much for 3D Marios.

I predict a “NEW new Super Mario Brothers Wii 2″ within a year.

Controlling Mario in 3D does not give the same sense of absolute precision the 2D games always offered. The 3D games are great and very inventive, but I never feel as comfortable controlling Mario as I do in the 2D games. Mucked up gravity and hopping to the underside of worlds only exacerbates the issue.

I’ll be interested to see how well RDR holds up. I reckon that second month is the rest of the “core” waiting to see whether or not they should get it. I suspect it’ll collapse in July and Galaxy 2 will be top. Can’t see anything else challenging it.

i keep hearing how inovative Nintendo are, but when it comes down to software, not so much, they own about 30 franchiises & keep doing literally countless sequels for them, even MS has made it to 60 Franchises, & leading the lot is Sony with well over 80 owned franchises aiming from the young to the old, while nintendo i stuck on the young AND the old, til they can make a franchise i’m willing to spend money on, i’ll keep away from any Nintendo product, it is afterall mainly the exclusives which makes or breaks the decision of purchasing another console, when money is limited

Dragon Quest IX was out last week. That could do quite well.

@20 – Yeah, that’s true. I can never gauge stuff like that. DS RPGs are a bit of a mystery to me.

Anyone have the full top 20 for the NPD? Dont be to concerned about Galaxy 2 that will be in the top ten when RDR isnt. Alan Wake seems to have gone hasnt it, hopefully its still in the top 20.

I don’t know about that, Hindle – the original Galaxy didn’t have the staying power that the likes of Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros Wii had.

Yet went on to sell 8m copies Blerk, those games you mentioned are still in the charts today even i dont think Galaxy 2 wil be there that long but longer then RDR id say so.

Well, I hadn’t realised it’d sold that many copies so maybe you’re right. Despite its success, it’s hard to imagine RDR doing that many copies.

Really disappointed not to see PeaceWalker in the top ten. Brilliant game. Then again, NPD don’t track downloads so…

Haha! sony had a 400% sales up by launching Slim PS3! 88% for M$! :D
“with MS pointing out it has outsold PS3 for five years”
you can beat PS3 for a month or two in global manners. but PS3′s the overall winner.

Psychotext

Where did you get 400% from? When the PS3 slim launched it beat it’s previous month’s sales by 87.4% and it’s previous year’s sales by 111.6%

September 2008 (5 weeks) – 238k / 46.5k a week
August 2009 (4 weeks) – 210k / 52.5k a week
September 2009 (5 weeks) 492k / 98.4k a week

No_PUDding

But isn’t 492 is more than 87% bigger than 210?

Surely 210 = base

420 = 100%

No?

Im working out 134%… Where am I going wrong?

You’re not taking into account the length of the reporting periods. Use the weekly sales values to calculate the percentages.
