Rumour – New Tomb Raider coming next Christmas

Wednesday, 30th June 2010 15:16 GMT By Johnny Cullen

A new and fully-fledged Tomb Raider title is in the works at Crystal Dynamics, according to Eurogamer, and will be out by Christmas next year.

The report cites PC, 360 and PS3 as platforms for the game, although it was not confirmed whether or not subtitle for the game was “Downfall.”

Sources close to the site also revealed that leaked documents from last summer detailing the game, along with the accompanying piece of art you see above, is real and it relates to the new title.

EG also reports the art from an ex-artist at Crystal Dynamics spotted at the weekend belongs to the game as well.

Currently, CD is splint into two teams, according to the report. One’s working on putting the finishing touches on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light for PS3, 360 and PC. That’s due for a release this summer for a tenner.

The other team is working on the new Tomb Raider.

Publisher Square Enix gave a no comment on the matter.

They better hope ND have not got a game out then. Also they cant afford to mess this up either its already been rebooted has TR, this is its 2nd reboot. Looking forward to hearing more info.

true dat. It needs completely rebooting, and if the quality is anything less then Uncharted 2 they can expect average reviews across across the board. I hope they don’t tag on any gimmicky gameplay additions or motion controls, i just want a solid puzzle/action platformer

I don’t think it necessarily needs to compete with Drake, it just needs to be a decent Tomb Raider game. The last one was rather lacking, I was glad I only paid £6 for it. Anniversary, on the other hand, was great.

A reboot might be enticing, but I have serious doubts they’d actually get it right. In a similar manner, I wouldn’t want them to just make an Uncharted clone – they might seem similar at first glance but Uncharted’s really about the shooting, which isn’t what I want from a Tomb Raider game.

  4. DaMan

silly, ND is irrelevant, people who play TR aren’t the same as those who enjoy that game. Anniversary is a good example what TR is all about.

more so that from what they’ve shown the game becomes less and less like UC, Legend was the wrong way to go.

  5. theevilaires

    Stop #1 and 2 M$ needs a game close to UC ;)

  6. mington

tomb raider is crying out for amazing visuals, really interesting lush environments that are begging to be explored and surprising environments too. i found Legend seriously lacking in that department. The first level with the diving was awesome but it just went down hill after that, that hellboy rip off swinging hammer level at the end was a fucking chore

    and no motorbike shit!

    #6 5 years ago
  7. DaMan

    that would be Underworld, mington.

albeit, Thailand level was good enough.

    #7 5 years ago
  8. mington

oops, i never played Legend then.

I preferred underworld to Anniversary at any rate

    #8 5 years ago
  9. DaMan

it was better in theory, but the actual game didn’t hold a candle to Anniversary.

    #9 5 years ago
  10. Blerk

    Anniversary > Legend > Underworld

    #10 5 years ago
  11. DaMan

Legend was bad, the lamest TR to date (not counting AoD and 4). way too easy and felt like a tps for the most part. I liked the graphics (for PS2) and soundtrack though .

  12. The Hindle

If they ever want Tomb raider to do the numbers it did in the 90s they will need to go the Uncharted route. What Uncharted does so well is it blends a lot of genres together.

The puzzles in Anniversery were incredible but if they stick to that its never going to do the sales Square want it to do. A completly new engine would help as well but i have a feeling they will use the same one.

If they are going to have gun combat in the game they need to make sure they get it right otherwise get rid of combat altogether.

    #12 5 years ago
  13. DaMan

Uc is a tps. nothing less, nothing more. on the rails shooting or close combat is a common part of that genre. what else did it blend, really?

you mentioned only a single route, the simplest one, which they already tried with Legend and pissed off many TR fans. they could make something similar to SotC but in a different way. puzzles, exploration, huge open world with a story slowly being uncovered by visiting various locations.. from the previews that were leaked back then it looks something like that.

    #13 5 years ago
  14. The Hindle

    It blended

    Cover based combat

into one complete package. They need to do some sort of overhaul whether that means going in the Uncharted direction i dont know but they cant afford to mess this up. The franchise is almost dead as it is.

Did you know that the original development team wanted The last revelation to be the last game in the series but Eidios basically milked it

    #14 5 years ago
  15. DaMan

well yeah, a tps with varying levels/missions. not a blend of the genres though, it’s various shades of the same one. at most it combines a PoP like game with kill switch/Gears of War. but it still plays more like an agile version of the latter.

those leaked previews showed something like I tried to describe, Livingstone also said they aren’t going the same way when commenting on ND’s game.

    #15 5 years ago
  16. DaMan

I never read that about Core, no. I assume they wanted to develop something else, while giving the series to another dev. that seems plausible enough.

I know that they planned a trilogy with AoD but Core messed up and they transferred the game developement to CD.

    #16 5 years ago
  17. The Hindle

Thats what sells though and wins goty after goty and im pretty sure Square want those .

  18. chronoss2

TR: Underworld is so ridiculous, many PS2 games look better. I’m not expecting anything from this serie which is losing the breath episode after episode.

    #18 5 years ago
  19. DaMan

Final Fantasy 13 sells more than Fable, but I wouldn’t call it a better game. besides, it’s not like it does that high numbers. and fortunately, Eidos execs still play a role.

anyway why wouldn’t it warrant awards for it’s quality? and like I said it isn’t the only way, far from it in fact.

    #19 5 years ago
  20. The Hindle

Oh no thats purely subjectional is the which is better debate i prefer Uncharted you prefer TR. Lets just hope that Eidios dont fuck it up again though as relistically this could be its last roll of the dice.

To get me intrested again its going to have to be a lot more fun to play basically as the last few Tomb raiders bored the shit out of me. It does need a Resident evil 4 style reboot though, completly change it as they have stuck to the same template for years and well the decline in revelence shows.

    #20 5 years ago
  21. DaMan

yeah, although I disagree with your fatalism =P , ie you only need to look at several TR community boards to see that enough people are interested in the franchise. the series has seen much worse days back when Chronicles and AoD were released. it’s just not doing as good as back in the old days, then again it’s called TR after all so I can understand Eidos’ sales expectations

I also disagree about the gameplay as being the main reason, even though I think they should change it. but Underworld wasn’t really that great. it felt rushed and not all the levels were equally designed, besides the initial release was buggy. just not as irrelevant as some people think. the only thing that needs serious work is the combat, as it ‘s purely dreadful tbh.

    #21 5 years ago
  22. The Hindle

Yep you can attribute Eidios as the main flaw to the franchise imo as everthing you just said can be traced back to them i.e TR underworld was buggy, Eidios rushed CD etc. Something like TR should not be a annualised sequel but Eidios insist on making it so.

    #22 5 years ago
  23. The Hindle

How much did the 90s Tomb raider games sell btw? you know when it was the biggest thing in gaming.

    #23 5 years ago
  24. DaMan

I think that The Last Revelations should’ve not been made, and Chronicles was just purely milkage, yeah. they should’ve given the third game more polish instead and put more though into it. and then took their time with AoD.. albeit it looked like Core just weren’t up to the task they were given.. but I assume Core either wanted to make a new story about Lara after Revelations or they were tired of developing the series and wanted to give the frnachise to someon else. but either way I doubt anyone wanted to stop making the games, more like Core just being tired from outsourcing the same stuff.

I think Eidos learned their lessons though, at least Livingstone’s comments on the future releases came across as good.

  25. DaMan

ie TR 2 did 8 million on PS1 alone,

  26. Bulk Slash

Yeah the biggest problem with the Tomb Raider franchise is Eidos. Legend and Anniversary were excellent, and personally I think the platforming gameplay is among the best for this generation. It’s such a shame that Underworld was such a rushed pile of crap.

Personally I’d like an Anniversary style remake of TR2!

  27. Galactic_Barret

What could be done, realistically, to ‘revive’ the TR series? For the most part, you have PoP with a focus on parkour-like platforming, UC with the action movie focus, AC with the focus on exploration, hell, Telltale is even making a Jurassic Park game. Where does LC fit in?

Its not the PS1 era anymore; the A/A genre is getting crowded, we’re all older with more discerning tastes. Where do they go from here?

    #27 5 years ago
  28. The Hindle

Thats the task that CD are faced with imo.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. YoungZer0

What this series really needs is a Lara Croft that looks like a real woman and not some Sex doll.

    #29 5 years ago
  30. MushroomStamp

I disagree :) if I have to spend hours watching a female jump around the screen, I like having some jubleees and rear to look at :) TR failing has had nothing to do with her looks, in fact when they shrank her boobs was the same time the sales went downhill. No it isn’t all about the ti-tays but it sure doesn’t hurt. It’s the gameplay that killed it… although the last one was actually decent, and i’m definetly looking forward to the new top down/iso perspective version. This viewpoint instead of the the standard TPS, allows for a greater concentration on the puzzle and exploration, imho. I prefer a more zoomed out approach… hmmm just a thought.. Gears of War with Diablo perspective :) i’d be all over it :)

TH, could you please refrain from posting stuff out of Gamesradar? it’s not like this one says something new or unique. link to Edge online, or something at least half decent.

  33. The Hindle

Its a list of whats wrong with the franchise, a good read as well he makes some good points.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. DaMan

sorry, I don’t read sites like that one. and all those points are old and/or shallow.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. The Hindle

Its pretty much the general consenus of whats wrong with TR anyway imo.

    #35 5 years ago
  36. DaMan

old, obvious and shallow points as well.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. The Hindle

Obviously points no one has listened to otherwise they wouldnt be old

    #37 5 years ago
  38. DaMan

some are old, some are wrong, some are obvious. mail that to Eidos. heh, no shit Sherlocks the combat is bad. but I don’t think it’s equally easy to post stuff on GR and implement a feature in a videogame.

seriously… if you really have much free time and want to analyze the latest TR, here I can link you to this, Hindle:
