Rumour – PSN premium service called “Service Pack” [Update]

psnlogo2

Update: We’ve just been told the Service Pack name is actually just an internal codename, and that PSN+ will be the name of the service at launch.

Original: A VG247 source has claimed that the premium service to be announced for PlayStation Network at Sony’s E3 press conference on Tuesday is named “Service Pack”.

A European source told us the details under strict anonymity.

It was previously reported that the sub service would be called PSN+, according to Joystiq.

The service is set to cost “less than £50 per year”, we were told a couple of weeks ago. It will feature a streaming music application that’s similar to Spotify which can run in the background while playing games, as well as the option to offer subscribers one free PSN title from a choice of “two to four” every month.

We were also told that cross-game chat, however, is not being saved as a paid feature, that there would be “nothing in the premium package which will gimp regular PSN users” like free online play and that because of the reveal of the service, a PSP2 announce is being held back until either gamescom or Tokyo Games Show at least.

Sony’s press conference takes place on Tuesday afternoon from 12pm PST. Get the lowdown on it here.

Definitley not liking the name (straight out of Microsofts handbook)…but curious to hear all this service will offer.

Also, PSP2? Really? With games like MGS:PW, new GOW, and Resident Evil on the way, would they really announce an upgrade NOW?

it would offer 100% good features. Since your paying for content + features. I guess free can come off cheap.

Sometimes I wonder what kind of fucking apes they have in their naming/marketing department. They should name it PSN+ (Plus, obviously). Short, straight, to the point, and it’s an ADDITION to the base. Durrr!

@onlineatron lol Hivemind! Hey, great minds think alike!

This is suitably balls enough to fit with Sony’s nomenclature.

You know how sports channel “ESPN” just rolls off your tongue?

They should call it “ePSN” for ENHANCED PlayStation Network.

…or PSN+…

Even Sony wouldn’t go for anything that bland and boring… would they?

What I do find interesting is the approach implied in the details – more of a loyalty premium for your money than paying for anything specifically to do with online gaming.

PSN+

I love the idea.. also its cool every month i can choose from few games and DLC one. If I never had this option, I would not buy and DLC any of the PSN games as much. SO I can’t wait.

Also even normal PSN players will be able to play for free online with their friends and what not.. Xbots eat your hearts out.. pay to play online.. what kind of BULSHIT is that?

It should be like on PC; Free to download and play, but you have to pay if you want to access a few more jobs and minigames.
