Blitz believes Microsoft will announce its 3D plans “soon”

Blitz Games’ Andrew Oliver has said that Microsoft’s planning to announce its plans for 3D on Xbox 360 “at some point soon”.

Speaking at the Westminster eForum ’2020 Vision event in London today,
as an early backer of 3D gaming
, Oliver believes it is only a matter of time before Microsoft is set for a reveal.

“3D does take a bit of extra work,” he said. “Microsoft are going to be making an announcement about it at some point soon.

“There’s lots of games coming on the PlayStation 3 very shortly in 3D. There’s a big show on next week. On the Xbox it [3D] has been rather quiet.

“Our game did come out in 3D on the Xbox 360, so 3D is possible, even through an HDMI 1.2 cable. Ubisoft created Avatar, which includes a mode for 3D on a 3D TV. It is just a case of adding a mode into the options menu, so there’s no need for two different products.”

Who knows, really. The way things are going, it would not shock us in the least if MS were to drop a massive bomb like this at a venue such as E3.

Then again, it wouldn’t be that big of a bomb, really. The future is now, after all.

Thanks, Develop.

But didn’t MS said that it isn’t time for 3D yet? Oh the irony!! (if true of course)

*Gets ready for opinions on how 3D is a useless gimmick to magically change*

@2 there’s nothing more amusing than executives changing horses mid race when it suits them… well okay there is, thankfully, but you get my drift.

Why do Sony keep saying only the PS3 can do 3D if the 360 can too?

I don’t get it.

@5 3D is possible on Xbox 360, it’s just not in that quality. Xbox 360 have HDMI 1.2 cable. Thats very important.
Avatar was crap even in 3D on PC and on 360 it’s possible to do.
But can you make a Killzone 3 level of 3D? I don’t know. Probably not.

The “level” of 3D doesn’t really have any meaning. You’re just taking an existing game, adding a different perspective or depth related data and sending it over the cable. The problem with the 360 and v1.2 of HDMI is not that there isn’t the bandwidth available (if you can do 1080/60, you can do 720p in 3D) but that no TV manufacturers (other than maybe LG) have said they will support it.

Basically they’d have to come up with some sort of hack… and who knows how they’d pull that off.
