We “need” Killzone 3 to beat Uncharted 2, GoWIII on a technical level, says Guerilla

Guerilla Games head Hermen Hulst has told VG247 that he “needs” Killzone 3 to beyond the PS3 tech benchmarks set by first-party games since the release of Killzone 2 last February – including Uncharted 2 and God of War III.
In an interview with us at the shooter’s formal reveal in Holland earlier this month, he did say, however, the race to win on a technical level is seen as “a little game” between his studio, Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica.
“We need to, right?” said Hulst when asked if Killzone 3 would jump ahead of both UC2 and GoW III.
“That’s what we do. We talk to those guys a lot, both the Santa Monica team and the guys at Naughty Dog, and that’s the little game between us as friends of the studios.
“Yes, we do that, but then again they’re working on their next games and they’re going to have to do better again. So absolutely: we need to do that.”
It’s thought that the Uncharted developer is working alongside Guerilla in some form with Killzone 3, although how is unknown.
Get our full interview with Hermen Hulst here. Killzone 3 releases next year for PS3.

Thats already impossible.
God Of War 3 use Morphological Anti aliasing
and Killzone 3 won’t use that because they need 60 frames per second to run 3D stuff. + it’s the same Killzone engine as before, but with more scale and 3D

Why is it that whenever a big game dev gives you an interview, you guys have to split it into half a dozen blog entries?

Erthazus, the game will scale depending on if it’s being played in 3D or not. Running in regular 2D I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s noticeably more post-processing going on, or even a resolution bump.
Your other two comments are also rather disingenuous. GoWIII‘s implementation of AA isn’t just better looking but also reportedly more efficient than leaving things up to the RSX, and both Uncharted games use the “same” engine; you need only look at how UE3 has come along to see that such things aren’t so easily quantified.

Maybe, maybe not. But they still need to make this game running for 60 frames per second no matter what. without it, no 3D, so thats why they using the same engine (\It’s not bad) it’s just i don’t see changes like from Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 2. Same engine and same shit, but looks 100% better. Screenshots just use different level environment and thats it + it will have bigger levels and more scale. Until gameplay trailer i’m not impressed by screenshots at all.

It’s just better looking. Without it, characters or Kratos won’t look like real.

marketing again…i´m really no fanboy of any system at all. but i really really hate this graphic/tech discussion sony or their frist party devs start all the time…right from the beginning they told us all day long what a powerhorse the ps3 will be. it is of course. and there have been some titles that proved that…but on the other hand the much much older lady 360 can still handle all the great multiplat games – and most often even better, because of it´s more userfriendly structure. there are also very great looking games on the 360. i really enjoyed uncharted 2 and it indeed looked awesome – but is it really that superüberlooking game? i don´t think so – also the art design was a little uninspired imo – nathan looks like goddamn ricky martin! god of war was also incredible – yet a little disappointing because it just felt like all the other gow´s i´ve played before. it looks awesome for sure, but so does bad company 2 imo. what i really don´t like about sonys marketing strategy – and because of that about the ps3 as a platform – is that they try to be sooooo very cool. come on sony. you don´t need that crap. focus on the games, on the gameplay and how much fun they are – leave that ps3 is the most powerfull console on planet earth crap to the fanboys – for serious more grown up gamers it´s just a turn off to hear men talking about how big their processors are…don´t believe the hype…

@6 I agree with you, but with some point i don’t. There are a lot of games that don’t need horse power or teh powA of PeeS Tree.
But, they want to make great next gen graphics and they believe in PS3 arhitecture and hardware… So why not?
Crytek developers only speaking about how Cryengine is fucking awesome engine. So why not?
From the Sony’s games i want to see gorgeous graphics, design and see how they can pull it off on their system.
Uncharteds train level is still is in my memory and it’s an awesome experience.
Gamers of that platform want that. Even CD Projekt’s Witcher 2 engine looks absolutely amazing with Direct X 10 effects and by yesterday interview they talked much only about design and graphics and how it will be the best graphics on teh RPG genre.
It’s cool.

All thanks to the person you all refer to as Krazy Ken
Never doubt the power of CELL and RSX.
…Oh and don’t focus on KZ3 as much. We already know that’s going to look great, but keep your eyes open for R3. I think Isomniac will try to top Naughty Dog. Now that’s going to be news.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for an R3 announcement this year…

On the flipside I think you’ll see Resistance 3 come out November of this year, with an announcement at E3.

A bet on what? I’m very confident it’ll be announced this year, less so it’ll be out in November; some evidence would point to Q1 2011, but I figure that would interfere with Killzone 3.
In any case I’m not a betting man, so no.

Awww… I was gonna say let’s bet £20 that R3 doesn’t show at E3 this year *and* doesn’t hit shelves before year-end. However, if you’re not a betting man, then I supposable all bets are off.

@13 Gheritt, i think R3 won’t come this year, but next year absolutely.
and i think they will show R3 this year. You think that two big blockbuster shooters are too much for the show?
Insomniac works like this: 2 teams and each year new title.
Last year was last chapter of Ratchet and this year Resistance team must show it’s game.
So then let me ask you a question, what you expect from Insomniac?

Not R3, that’s all.

Listen to Gheritt. It’s just been announced that Insomniac will make a multi-platform title to be published by EA. New IP, too. Sure, there still may be some space for R3 in there, but…

i think it will appear at e3 but not a chance for a 2010 release.
Its too late in the year now for ANY new announcements to make a 2010 release let alone just resistance. Anything that does i would therefore be concerned about its quality.
If R3 doesn’t get announced at e3 then questions will be raised it has to be mentioned, surely?

Well with the help they’re getting from Naughty Dog, they’ll probably at the very least get close.

R3 is a 2012 game id put a bet on that.
