Government passes Digital Economy bill

uk flag

The UK government finally passed the much-heated Digital Economy bill, but not without trouble.

The legislation will now become law after going through the parliamentary wash-up process, passing with a majority vote of 142, although was under much criticism because of several MPs complaining it was too important to have it go through the period which happens before a General Election.

Out of the measures included in the bill, including new anti-piracy controls, the main one for the games industry is that PEGI ratings will now become the sole age rating system in the UK, with the BBFC ratings getting booted out.

Get more details of the DE bill at GI and The Guardian. Thanks, Hunam.

The “debate” on this the other evening was frankly awesome. Literally about half a dozen MPs turned up, the lazy cunts.

The only people that bothered turned up were the antis plus those on the front benches who had to be there. Strangely enough as soon as there were any divisions up popped lots of people from nearby bars and offices forced into the lobbies by the whips.

Not a very good demonstration of how parliament works for those viewing it really. I don’t think we can rely on Brenda refusing to grant Royal Assent on the basis it wasn’t properly debated or considered either.

Another bad law rushed through with fuck all scrutiny. :-(

Is this the same Bill that was passed only because the dropped a £6 a year tax so everyone can nhave fibre optic broadband?

Stupid cunts.

Because age ratings are SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than maintaining the UK’s place as an internet leader (in terms of developers)

“The next 42 clauses of the bill were then considered in five minutes.” [grauniad] – parliament FAIL.

The only good thing to come out of that was the dropping of the orphan works clause imo. The irony of that bill legalising the theft of certain copyrighted works whilst trying to stop it in other areas would probably have killed me stone dead.

Idiots.

Not without trouble??? A majority vote of 142 sounds like it didn’t have any trouble at all….. (IMO)

Aren’t the lords supposed to be looking at it this afternoon?

I’ll be amazed if anyone in the Lords has even heard of the internet.

It’ll be whipped through the Lords just like it was in the Commons.

Sad day really. Its good to know that 20,000 people wrote to their MPs and not a single one decided to do anything about it.

Good to know that they are working for us right, right?

Bet the 1st one to get a letter from their ISP is an MP, who denies ever downloading anything illegal and claiming it was their “cleaner” or something. And they’ll get away with it all of course, as MP’s always do.

HA! That’s nothing. In the US, our congress took 24 hours to pass a bill that had 5000 pages and took over 1/7th of the US economy, is set to ruin our health care system with socialized medicine, and did it all against the will of the American people.

Now THAT’S ‘Another bad law rushed through with fuck all scrutiny’.

I’ve gone for Giganews for VPN + SSL encryption meaning no one knows what I’m doing on my connection, fucking cock MPs :/

@13: While I agree it was 5000 pages when it didn’t need to be and was full of kick-backs and bullshit your health care system was already horribly fucked up, I think anything is better than nothing in that case.

“your health care system was already horribly fucked up, I think anything is better than nothing in that case.”

Not in this case, El. We have an expensive but incredible health care system. If you need treatment there is no waiting in America (except for organs and the like). What the gov did was take our BMW with a flat tire and forced us to drive a Yugo without an engine. We simply can not afford what Obama is doing. I won’t go into it all on a video game site, but it is a bad, bad deal and will kill our capitalistic system and replace it with an anchor. At this rate, and I’m not kidding, within 20 years the US will look like Greece.

Not only that, they excluded themselves from the bill/law.Why are they any different? They should be treated equally, just as any other American or resident. They’re not better than us. Wth happened to equality? (it’s probably because they know it’s gonna be shitty tho, fucking bastards)….Sorry, here we are talking about videogames, and I’m talking about US healthcare.
