CVG ed appears on Alan Titchmarsh in game violence debate

Monday, 22 March 2010 07:54 GMT By Johnny Cullen

MW2 Russian

CVG editor Tim Ingham appeared on The Alan Titchmarsh Show to co-debate the issue of violence in games.

From the get-go, he was under the spotlight by Titchmarsh and actress/sexpert Julie Peasgood.

The battle seemed one-sided, although former Sun editor Kelvin McKenzie was a little more open to the debate, acknowledging the average age of a hardcore gamer was 33. Peasgood was still up for a fight, mind.

“Videogames are interactive – they promote hatred, violence and sexism,” she said, later pointing at the infamous airport level from Modern Warfare 2.

Ingham did well but sticking up for the Modern Warfare 2 rampage was basically defending the indefensible. Not his fault but Infinity Ward’s for creating an “interactive” level that robs you of moral choice.

I’ve got to take my hat off to that Tim Ingham chap. I’d say he did a bloody good job considering he was basically arguing with people of dinner-lady level intelligence. He was never really going to come out of that as the winner, given the slant of the argument, but he at least came across as someone well-informed and articulate rather than a knee-jerk reacting moron.

And WTF is a Julie Peasgood and what’s her problem? Did violent video games kill its mum or something?

“violence in entertainment. it´s just wrong”…whats wrong with that? whats wrong with this women? violence in real life – thats just wrong. so this blonde, aggressive middleaged women should stop eating meat first and stop abusing animals for her delicacy. probably she even lets her underaged kid eat meat – so they can kill directly not virtually. so she´s actually teaching her kid to be violent. or she should stop buying her nice and shiny leather boots, or stop wearing cosmetics because they were probably tested on animals, or stop buying her clothes that were probably made in a sweatshop, or shouldn´t drive that mercedes benz because they also sold weapons…real wepaons not pixelweapons…she´s probably even in a yoga class and thinks she´s a good girl. HYPOCRITES

That was painful to watch. I felt so sorry for Ingham, he was basically being ganged up on, not only by the presenters but by the audience as well. However, you can just see from all the comments that this got on youtube, that no-one who actually uses the internet agreed with those smug twats.

Hats off to Tim Ingham, despite the show clearly being a ‘public execution’ (if it was meant to be fair they’d have had 2 people for both sides) he stuck to his guns with decent arguments and answers ready.

lol games promote racisim and sexisim? no, lets see her list the the games that do, more proof people like her dont know jack shit about games, i bet you there was a few hypocrites in that auidence cheering when they know they got thier child an 18 rated game

i also love how the parents topic got side stepped, typical of this country allways trying to avoid home truths when it comes too taking responsibility, then blame everyone else but your self when it goes wrong

I love the fact how Peasgood said games encourages sexism when she’s a sex expert, while if I remember correctly, Kelvin McKenzie wrote the “Gotcha” headline for The Sun during one of the UK’s bloodiest wars.

Yet they have the cheek to have a pop at games like Modern Warfare and more?

    Hypocrite, thy name is.

Gawd, if Peasgood was writing an essay on the link between violent video games and real life violence, I wouldn’t give her a Pass. I love the example – kids who play games are more likely to have low self-esteem – otherwise better interpreted as – people more likely to be indoors are more likely to have indoor hobbies. Bet you’d find the same with reading books, watching TV, or tending to houseplants. Bloody cacti, giving me low self-esteem. Plus the use of the word ‘proved’ is a cardinal sin in the science world – nothing is proven unless you guarantee it’s true in 100% of incidences, which is near impossible.

Nice one on the bad science Peasgood.

Ingham did a great job of TRYING to educate these people.
But only Kelvin McKenzie wanted to listen.
Nobody seemed at all fussed by the fact these things have age ratings, and there’s much more influence in films featuring torture porn.
The only argument these busy-bodies could come up with was that films aren’t interactive.
Well, I reckon ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ although shite, is interactive thanks to the 3D element.
Reading books is interactive as well, because you’re imagining yourself entering the world, and visualising what the words put into your head.

Unfortunately, there’s no educating those who wont listen.

Stalwart stuff, Tim, you kept your cool admirably. I didn’t think the others were all that bad, though.

It’s always interesting to see how these things are orchestrated: Peasgood and her predictable “think of the children” routine, McKenzie the venerable outsider, Ingham the intellectual under fire. Just remember that it’s all for the sake of a performance, ultimately – nobody seriously positions these shows as “educational” (and with 7 minutes to work with, who can blame Titchmarsh for pushing the debate towards big flammable unproductive statements like “would you show this to your kids”? Well, lots of people, I suppose – but you must concede there’s a certain craft involved).

  17. G1GAHURTZ

Yeah, it’s all just tabloid stuff for the baying crowd. Interestingly, I just watched The Bonus Round, where the usual suspects discuss story telling in the likes of the now infamous ‘No Russian’.

If people Peasgood could get hold of some of the quotes that Jaffe and Croal were using, they’d probably run riot. They talked about the No Russian scene being more effective if you were forced to snipe an ‘innocent mother cradling her child’ amongst other ways of making it more chest poundingly brutal.

I think that no-one would disagree that a lot of game devs and publishers have intentionally gone for or pushed for the controversially offensive angle, just as others have in other types of media. However, I think that it needs to be completely rammed down the throats of the sensationalist media and their sheep-like rabble at every available opportunity that these games were never designed for children, nor should they ever be played by them.

Unless that happens, they’ll continue to convince one another that video game = kids only entertainment.

I can’t watch stuff like this – it’s far too frustrating.

I can assure you that people like Peasgood incite violent tendencies in me far more than games do. If I was on these shows I’d just do a Paxman and repeat the same point at them until they actually addressed it…

“Yes, but games have age ratings, so why are we having this argument?”.

“Yes, but it’s not meant for kids, these games have age ratings!”.

“Yes, but these games have age ratings!!!”.

    I agree with G1GA.

And I think the ppl on the show in the clip are using ignorance to push their own agenda.

    However.

And this is where the rpoblem really is at.

When I look down my friends list(on both my LIVE accounts – one mine, other my youngest sons), the only ones playing MW2(for the most part – always gonna find Hindle and reask on it too), are kids. Of course it isn’t just MW2. Its everything. From DAO to Dante to GTA – to anything else that is popular with a M rating.

I know there is no good solution right now. Nothing is working. And despite the ratings and the stores “not” selling to minors, kids are eating these games up. And worse, in my book, I know damn well that most of these games are marketed to apeal to kids.

It is frustrating for many parents that actualy do care. If I don’t let my kids play said games(and I don’t, I filter them carefuly), their friends laugh at them. There is a lot of peer pressure on the school bus, at the lunch table, after school etc. And often times when a kids friend comes over, he sees the Wii, PS3, and XB360, gets excited, and then complains because I won’t let them play whatever game. Your going to socialy handicap your kids if you do what your suposed to as a parent. I that is often at the crux of the “everyone else is playing them” pov for many parents.

And there are many other sides to this issue as well.

Too many for me to agrue about in this forum.

I will say this however, being older, I am not drawn to most Mrated games. Look most Mrated games go after their demographics by adding in scenes that are over that T rated line to try and win over the so called Mrated crowd. Who is the Mrated crowd? 14-24 yr old male gamers. I have read lots on the subject and that is what I beleive to be the target demographic for games such as GoW, CoD, BF, GTA, Dante, etc. Its the classic and traditional known gamer teen/young adult males. That obviously doesn’t mean that older gamers can’t enjoy the same games. However unlike 15 years ago, the average age of gamers has increased. That once 24 yr old is now 39, and likly still plays games. I am older that that, mind you, but my point is that what once apealed to him may very well not anymore.

Like movies, I used to watch teen screams, even after I was a teen, but now I don’t. I think the game industry often forgets this. I think they are making “Mature” games without relizing that the content that they put in there to push the Mature envolope, isn’t really mature to begin with. I guess I am rambling a bit. What i am trying to say is that a person who is honestly mature … is not going to go Bevis and Butthead over boobies in a video game. I would enjoy battlefield BC2 just as much if it was rated T(like the first one). Infact I would have been more comfortable, I could do w/o the F-bomb and other such comments being used every 90 seconds. The gameplay would have been just as good. There is a point in there somewhere, I think.

He didn’t exactly stick up for the airport scene, he simply tried to explain the context of it to a woman who clearly didn’t know. He said it was off topic, so he clearly had his own views on the matter. And I don’t believe its indefensible, I do believe we’re ready to tackle subject matter like that, but it was all a bit ridiculous and screamed of Infinity award doing something outrageous just because they could.
