Nearly four years after its reveal at the Sony press conference back at E3 in 2006, Final Fantasy XIII releases today in the west for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 after a release late last year in Japan.

The game’s gone through the ringers since its reveal, from a lack of information on it to doctored shots, but it still wasn’t a touch on what was announced in July 2008.

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada announced at Microsoft’s press conference at E3 that year that FFXIII would be heading to Xbox 360, having previously been a PS3 exclusive.

Reviews for it have mostly been good, with a couple of bad ones like a five from Edge. IGN’s just gone live with an 8.9.

Final Fantasy XIII is the main course in a three-part series for the franchise, known as Fabula Nova Crystalis. Two more titles, Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PlayStation 3 and Final Fantasy Agito XIII for PSP, are on the way.

Press release is below.

Seriously, I hope someone announces a huge megaton at E3 this year so we can move on from MS/FFXIII. The whole thing is…well, it’s just old.

This will be the first main Final Fantasy title that I haven’t picked up in the week of release since FF8.

    Had it since yesterday.

My opinion of the game so far?

The gameplay is great once customisation and paradigms are unlocked, which takes about 3 hours – very fast paced and challenging, always keeps you on your toes. Lightning is a Cloud rip-off. Snow is pretty cool. Sazh is much better than I expected him to be. Vanillie is fuuuuuucking annooooooyyyyying! Hope is an emo. Story so far is compelling and well paced. Acting is hit and miss – sometimes great, sometimes dire. The music is easily the best in the series since IX.

    Rating: 8 out of 10.

Good job they fired all their composers this week, then. Couldn’t have that.

    I’d give it a 6/10.

Too much work to play. Drowning in bad reused story. We have seen all of this done before, if you like that then great, if you want a fresh feeling FF, your out of luck.

The graphics are nice. But that wears off.

The gameplay is fast, once you get to it.

Played at a friends house, xb360USA.

Buy it if your a FF DieHard,

Might wanna rent it first if your not.

I didn’t like it, neither does my friend.
