Yamauchi: GT5 to use “80%” of PS3′s power

Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi has estimated in an interview with Venturebeat that Gran Turismo 5 will use “80 percent” of PS3′s processing power.
Asked how much of the system’s capability the racer will use compared to Uncharted 2, Yamauchi replied: “It is about the same for the PS3, about 80 percent of the processing power.
“The PS3 hardware has a very high peak performance. The better you manipulate it, the better it performs.”
Yesterday, Sony delayed Gran Turismo 5, but only for Japan’s release in March.
There is no date yet for the US or Europe: something SCEE will be announcing “in due course.”
It was announced earlier this week that the GT Time Trial demo, seen as a taster for the full game, was downloaded over 1 million times since its launch in December last year.

You might wanna add that the GT Time Trail demo only represent the physics in the full GT5 and not the graphics or the entire game
Also it been downloaded 1 million times in Europe only and not the entire world

He’s going to get a lot of flak for that comment if the game ends up having tearing or framerate dips.
(Even though he’s likely talking about the SPUs vs the GPU)

Only 80%?
All this time in development and they could only manage 80%?
Poor show Polyphony.

I find stats like this interesting, but very suspicious.
Out of curiosity and for comparison sake, what percent of PS3’s processing power does say U2, KZ2, or FF13 use? I’m not sure how they calculate the percentage and if it’s purely a developer thing or if it’s legitimate/universal data.

Whilst he uses 20% of his working week developing the game and the other 80% boozing it up with dem bitches and hoes!

I thought Uncharted 2 used all 100%?
Something’s been lost in translation I think.

Of course it never used 100%. That was all PR speak and is in theory impossible to do.
I don’t understand the logic behind saying a console is maxed out, surely Sony want people to believe that there are greater things to come during the PS3s lifecycle.

Well, didn’t every game claim to use 100% of the PS2 when it was coming to the end of it’s software conveyor?
Yet I played GoW2 the other day and it really is incredible how good it looked.
Every game at the end of the PS2 lifespan looked better and better.
Saying a console is maxed out is utter rubbish. How exactly is this measured?

“How exactly is this measured?”
In this case it would be how far they are from keeping the SPUs running at 100% capacity 100% of the time… which is pretty much impossible unless you write code which specifically does just that.
As for maxing out a console… you could do it from day one, obviously. But over time developers learn more and more efficient ways to use the hardware, so technically you’re doing more with the cycles available to you, even if you might not be using the peak performance (for reasons already mentioned).
In short, people are idiots and demand easily understandable figures. Devs are idiots for giving it to them.

Only uses 80% of the PS3′s power eh?
Not that we’re ever going to find out at this rate!

All of Polyphony’s computers and networked to this: http://img2.photographersdirect.com/img/27726/wm/pd2321659.jpg
This was a year ago. Only 60% power used.

GT5 uses 80+%
ONE REASON, because people play GT5 for HOURS, especially when it comes to 4,6,8, 12, and 24 hour endurance races.. so if power was full to 100% PS3 would of melt after 24hour race lol..
As well, KAZ mentioned that GT6 will use GT5′s cars and almost recycle it, so by the time GT6 arrives on PS3, they will use over 95% so the game looks improved.
SO 80% gives them room to prettier up GT6 on the PS3.

I only use 17% of my brains processing power, but I’m still amazing.

I wish developers would stop doing this. No one really cares and you can’t quantify how much of the hardwares power was used so knock it off.

I’m sure with all the technology these people have at their finger tips I’m sure they can just about work out the percentage of what they are using. Remember the processor is finite so they must be able to quantify it. Just sayin

When i play GT5 i’m going to give it 110% of my effort, using 10% of my brain, whilst having the volume set at 85% so i can hear the beautiful engine noises but not wake the neighbours. I’ll aim to have 5% of the game complete on day of purchase assuming it comes out 50% of the way through this year.
I hope that’s enough percentages for everyone…

They’re going to use that last 20% for AI routines.
Of course, I jest.
