Rumour – You play Jack in Visceral’s The Ripper
Visceral’s newly-revealed Jack the Ripper game will put players in Jack’s shoes, according to Destructoid sources.
But slow down there, horsey. You may think of Mr Ripper as a medically-skilled whore-killer. Not so. Apparently, he’s a supernatural force for good. Who knew?
If that piece is correct, Jack spends his time protecting people from demons, vampires and such. OTT weapons and a time-slowing ability are being mooted.
Which is great, but we really were looking forward to getting stuck into some hookers with a bagful of surgical equipment. As were you all, right guys? Guys?
No date. The game hasn’t even been announced yet.

This is an idea that really shouldn’t be implemented, hopefully Destructoid have got their wires crossed.

Sounds like 19th Century Wolfenstein. With prostitutes.

Sounds like trying to sell a game on controversy.

They’d better be joking, but, even so, this is not amusing…

Er… what? I know people were complaining about what they did to Dante’s Inferno, but if you’re going to change it entirely then what’s the point of even using the character in the first place?

Deary me.
Next from Visceral – Santa Claus: the rapture.
A homesick Santa tries to get back into hell by stealing the souls of young children.

Of course, the game is just called ‘The Ripper’. They could just say it’s his brother, Tony. Or Gary. Gary the Ripper. Lesser known, but more of an unsung hero of the people than a tart-eviscerating lunatic.

This is all a big misunderstanding. The Ripper is actually about surreptitiously breaking wind whilst braving the streets of 19th century London.
The objective of the game is to shift the blame onto others nearby using an innovative dialogue mechanic, the Fast-Action Reply Turnabout System. The higher the social class of your target, and the greater the amount of people you are able to convince of their guilt, the higher your score. Context-sensitive bonuses are also available, such as for ruining someone’s date through your implications or letting go in the face of someone whilst they sleep.
It plays like a mix between Hitman and Phoenix Wright, basically. You should be able to try it yourself soon as I’m pretty sure there’s a demo scheduled to be out before the end of the year; it’ll most likely be the tutorial where you have to blast one out near a cab driver and blame it on his horse.

Why bother with Jack the Ripper if you’re going to turn him into generic super hero #1241245 ?

Pfft. Lightweights. I still want the Peter Sutcliffe game. The Wii remote was made for the job.

Media backlash incoming. Probably.
TBH that sounds lame to me. I thought for a minute we were going to get a dark, thrilling adventure. Not some daft action title with a complete reworking of a serial killer as a good guy as the hook.
Consider me no longer interested. As Freek says, if you’re going to make it generic fodder leave a genuinely interesting character and setting alone.

@21, I’m glad they hadn’t invented colour photography or high definition, because I’m pretty sure that’d be gut wrenching if I could make out what it was.

Yeah and he’s supposed to be the ‘hero’ of the game.
If our ‘hero’ is that twisted then there are going to be some seriously fucked up enemy demons and vampires in this game.

The concept of the anti-hero isn’t new.
Kratos from GoW is a good example of playing as a right bastard.

I think they are just making him to be a hero for the sake of free publicity. Imagine the media when this game is in actual developement and is close to release. Serial killer, a hero? whats next Charlie Manson , a angel doing Gods work…
They are pumping games out too fast imo… focus whats on your table then work on something next. This is Probably EA pushing them too bad Visceral didn’t have its own name before being made then they could have their own freedom of developement.

Thats fine and all but This is a serial killer and the company is remaking him to be a hero.
ANti-hero are by far my favorite characters to play, read; Kain, Raziel, Punisher, Spawn, etc.
If they do it right great for them but they could have easily made it a new char and did a story instead they use Jack the Ripper for the sake of publicity,

the original Jack the Ripper wasn’t simply a serial killer, he killed only prostitutes.
anti hero? what the fuck. what’s next, making protagonist based on some pedophile?

Kratos and ‘The Ripper’ arnt really on the same level. One actually existed ans killed real people for starters…

So it’s ok to play a fictional Greek butcher who kills indiscriminately (well, anyone who isn’t Spartan), but not ok to play a historical character who is re-written not to kill people at all?

yes it’s okay to play as Kratos. it’s even okay to play as Cash in Manhunt.
seriously, there’s a difference between killing to survive and some sicko with a mommy complex ‘cleaning the society’.. like there’s a difference between say, Napoleon and Stalin.
