ACII versus Modern Warfare 2 – 9 million original sales say we’ll succeed, says Desilets

Assassin’s Creed II’s chances will not be hampered by the near-identical release date of Modern Warfare 2, creative director Patrice Desilets told VG247 at GamesCom, thanks to its difference in nature.

Did you know the original Assassin’s Creed went head-to-head with Modern Warfare in 2007 and sold 9 million units? We didn’t.

“The first game we released two weeks after Modern Warfare, and we still sold 9 million copies,” said the developer.

“People, when they want their first-person shooter fix, they buy Modern Warfare. If you want you a swords, running on rooftops, big open city fix, this is it.

“And there are people that want to play that, and they don’t want to play the game with guns.”

Desilets added that the sequel isn’t just a rehash, but will have the same allure as the original.

“It has the same appeal as the first one, but we got rid of all the frustration. And it’s much bigger. Really, we give a lot more to the player,” he said.

We sat through half an hour of Assassin’s Creed II gameplay at the show. In a word, instabuy.

Assassin’s Creed II launches November 20. Modern Warfare 2 launches November 11. Both look amazing, for the record. So buy both. Dur.

Going up against CoD4 2 years ago was a totally different prospect to going up against MW2.

Back then, I’d say that AC probably had equal, if not more hype around it, as there were a whole bunch of FPS’s that released at around the same time.

One of the two (guess wich) looks the same as it’s prequel , didnt add up much novelty to it beyond obviously a new sp campaign , and yet cost more …

So no i’ll only buy AC2 i guess .

He’s probably right, I’m really looking forward to both.

the same mission over and over and over and over and over again
Assassin’s Creed : 3 mission types. Assassin’s Creed 2 : 16 mission types. You might want to reconsider that statement.

I haven’t been able to see the new demo of Assassin’s Creed 2, but what Infinity Ward showed to the press at this Gamescom was really average, almost shallow.

I’d rather see Assassin’s Creed 2 succeed, because they are actually trying to improve the first game, whereas Infinity Ward is just releasing the same thing, and it’s beginning to look like it’s worse.

One of the games may well be adding a lot more over it’s prequel but the other was close to perfection first time around. AC2 *needs* to improve a lot more than MW2 relative to it’s prequel.

That said if they manage to sort it out I’ll look at picking it up.
