Rumour – Slim PS3 revealed through Chinese factory shots [Update]

ps3slimchina

Update – The original images have been pulled.

Some images of what looks remarkably like a slim PS3 have appeared on a Chinese message board, apparently taken from a factory.

Pay attention. The elbows in the ribs are strong on this one. E3 or bust.

Hocus Pocus!

Sony never lie?!

They said its not coming out!

This is all Jigery Pokery!

That could be a pirated PS3. like the Vii or whatever it was called.

To be fair, if they had come out with this several months ago, lots of people would have not bought a ps3 and waited for this to come out, so they would have lost sales.

From those pictures it looks a little too thin to me…

LOL, it looks like one of those rip off machines, which will play ten pre-installed racing games or something.

I call shenanigans.

.. that said, would be great if true, they could do with a cheaper slimmer model to get people excited about the machine again.

Looks fake to me.

I can’t imagine why they’d change the font in the letters ‘PS3′.

Yeah, I’d like to believe, just like Mulder. But as the astute Giga comments, the font is way off.

It looks real, but even if it’s real we don’t know what it is.

Is it the new design of PS3?
Is it a new design specific for a new market?
Is it a redesign prototype, maybe even discarded?

We’ll know in a couple of weeks!

It looks really ugly!

The font changed between PlayStation and PSone.

What could seal this story’s fate as “shenanigans” is simply the fact that assuming the chrome bit is the BD drive, it is simply too small.

The GPU and CPU would need a hell of a decent die-shrink in order to make it small enough and cool enough to dispense with the PS3′s mammoth cooling system.

Lack of USB ports and PlayStation logo is also suspicious.

It still looks massive to me. Slim yeah, but just as wide and maybe even a bit longer.

I seriously doubt this is real.

As Giga already stated they would not change the font, and a top down view is the easiest sort of image to photoshop rather than a side on or front ways image that would show a lot more.

EDIT: looked at the article. Load of crap. Looks cheap and nasty. Seriously doubtful of actual existance.

Hmm, I’m buying into this despite my scepticism towards the rumour yesterday.

I actually think the change in typography gives the images validity. The Spider-Man font was always rather ill-advised, and if this is all true I’d wager the PSP Go’s logo will be similarly rounded in style; Sony will push the two devices as companion products that have similar aesthetics, the same interface, access a unified Store, etcetera.

Yesterday I didn’t really see what Sony had to gain by putting out a redesign so early in the console’s life, but perhaps it isn’t a cost saving measure so much as a chance to shift public perception, a bit like the NXE. Currently a lot of people dismiss the machine out of hand despite it — opinion incoming! — having a more interesting and varied software line up ahead of it than the 360.

Incidentally I don’t see anything particularly suspect in the casing shots themselves. In terms of form factor it isn’t that drastically different to the current model; going by the size of the DualShock 3 I’d say there’s something like a 20% reduction in width and fairly negligible nip-tucking elsewhere. I think it’s reasonable to assume that the machine will switch to an external PSU — much like the PSTwo — which would save a chunk of space, and as it will no doubt be using 45nm chipsets that would mean around a 30% reduction in die area and potentially a smaller cooling system.

I think probably Shenanigans but a couple of points.

There are a couple of USB slots on one shot and the PS logo is just above the drive slot. Change of font is also similar to the change when PSOne was released as mentioned above.

Incidentally link in article has died 1UP have the pics though :-

After seeing the 1up link, I highly doubt anybody goes to those sorts of lengths to create a fake. I’d say this is going to happen, wow, a PS3 & PSP re-launch, Sony are coming out fighting, that’s for sure.

I highly doubt anybody goes to those sorts of lengths to create a fake.

You’d be surprised at the type of stuff that usually pops up just before E3…

I need to know the price and spec right now, so I can sell my launch 60GB asap (sounds like a jet fighter) :(

It came out just before E3 2005.

I remember the day that I saw it I really couldn’t care less if it was real or not, because I was so totally buzzing after seeing the Killzone 2 stuff.

I’ve always maintained Sony should have gotten cracking on this since it became apparent the PS3 launched was botched. Put the R&D spend in now and profit from the reduced cost hardware for longer. A proper relaunch will be the only thing that makes a dent in Japan for them I think.

That said, I’d be amazed if they got it out this early, hardware being their forte or not.

Hah, I remember that Nintendo ON stuff. I think everyone immediately knew it was a fake, I did at least, but it’s still impressive.

Whilst a hell of a lot of effort went into that Nintendo On thing it is all CGI. These are obviously real photos of something some one has manufactured (for what ever reason).

Colour me surprised… seems way too early for a slim version. That said, given PS3 sales have been poor in comparison to the older systems maybe they felt the need to rush it out.

#25

Razor
14/05/09, 12:53 pm

I’m saying real.

It makes sense, a PSP and PS3 re-launch with a price drop at E3…but why can’t they leak the new PSP though, dammit!

Pulling the shots could also be a clever move by someone wanting to give validation to a rumour. [/devil's-advocate]

while those shots are cool and it’d certainly be interesting to see a new ps3 i’d be far more interested in the box of the pspgo

Wow, I really hope this is fake, it looks hideous and its still really wide, just skinny, so you couldn’t even stand it up

#37

Quiiick
14/05/09, 3:12 pm

Looks genuine to me. But then again, you can never be sure these days …

@doctorstrange
It’s not really that skinny because in those pics you never see the two shells together. Apart from the pack-shot and this pict is almost taken from top down:

That looks so fake. The way the wrote PS3 on it looks stupid and the system itself looks fake.

#39

Quiiick
14/05/09, 3:32 pm

As @Aimless already said:
The rounded PS3 logo shown here looks way better than the old, rather ill-advised “spiderman” font.

Also: nice touch to repeat the logo on the bottom of the console so you can see it from either side when the unit is standing upright.

#40

Razor
14/05/09, 4:44 pm

It looks like the tradition of the original looking better than the slim version will continue.

The original PS3 feels proper chunky and sturdy…this looks flimsy…

#41

tont

I’ve never seen such a blatant rip-off of an existing console to package a NES clone with, of which there are about 50,000,000,000 variations made in China.

Though I’ll laugh plenty if it’s an actual Sony redesign, as that logo is way nicer than the shitty Spiderman font.

#42

I’ve just been told this is 100% bullshit.

I would’ve been surprised if it had been shrunk so soon.

Breaking news!

The new DualShock™ Pico has been revealed, which will accompany the new, slim PS3!

Poking fun a bit? Maybe.

I’ve seen plenty of Chinese rip-offs, the most noteworthy being the Vii but there are literally hundreds of others, some of which look exactly the same (or very close) to the console they’re taking off. This being out of China, I wouldve thought it to be an obvious rip-off.

Still, if you’re willing to believe it, I have an imported PS3 Pico system (with pads!) to sell you.

Haha…

When the leaked photos were brought up in private conversation, the merchandizing representative was immediately surprised that the photos were “released already,” but then hastily dismissed the subject when the rep realized that it was regarding a rumor.
