Borderlands isn’t cel-shaded after all

borderlandsa

Remember the story doing the rounds yesterday that reckoned Gearbox shooter Borderlands was cel-shaded? Well, it isn’t.

“No, Borderlands is not cel-shaded — it’s a gritty and serious world after all,” Gearbox boss Pitchford told Kotaku.

“But since the game was first unveiled we have made big advancements with the art direction and the technology to support the art and have produced some pretty impressive, even shocking results.”

So there we are. Watch for a reveal, Ringo. Real soon.

Aparently Pitchford doesn’t know his own game, since the PC gamer scans are already up in the Kotaku comments section.
It is cell shaded and looks FANTASTIC!

Thought so, as i said; it didnt look cel-shaded in the last screenshots…

But it is cell shaded, they probably thought up their own stupid name for it.
Look up the scans on Kotaku. Seems to go along similar lines as Prince of Persia: cell shaded but detailed at the same time.

Looks amazing but isn’t really cell shading. There’s more to that style than simply looking hand drawn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel-shaded_animation). The scans from PC Gamer do look fantastic though. Really impressed.

Looks like Crackdown sexing Prince of Persia.

    I like.

Woah, that is indeed cel-shaded, i didnt see it on the official shots showing enemies and environments but those characters look like they’re straight out of a cartoon.
