Rumour: Target ad shows $100 PS2

Kotaku’s posted up what looks to be a Target ad for a $100 PS2, down from $130.
The image adds weight to speculation yesterday that Sony may be about to announce a price drop for the ancient machine.
Apparently it comes from next week’s Target catalogue.
Sony is planning to make some kind of large announcement today, apparently. We shall see.

Large announcement = our last-gen console that no-one makes games for any more is going to be a bit cheaper.
I’m used the industry over-hyping things, but that’s ridiculous. Great console and all, but fuck…

There’s 7 third party releases for PS2 this month alone. It just makes you look a bit dense when you declare your assumptions on something when there’s an abundance of proof to show otherwise. I believe EA and LucasArts have major releases coming to the platform this year too.
Also, the games media has made much more of a big deal about this forthcoming announcement than Sony have. But people don’t seem to be very good at noticing who is doing the hyping when they complain about hype do they?
I dunno. Perhaps if whiners and complainers actually paid some attention to things instead of just their own imagination they wouldn’t have so much to complain about. Why don’t you give it a go?

The fact they are bothering with this tells you something, i.e. the old girl’s still selling.

The “old girl” has only started to slow dramatically of late. I think they want to milk another 1 million + before declaring it dead and done at the end of next fiscal. Or they are going to get rid of surplus stock now, stop producing it and discontinue sales when stock dies down after E3. Either way it is still selling 10s of thousands a week worldwide which is alarming for a 10 yr old ‘computer’
I would like an E3 announcement saying they are throwing their support behind PS3 for now on. I mean at some point they have too and 3rd year of the next gen is a fine time to start.

So will there be a press conference? Or will they just send out a press release some time today?

Assuming this is all true, I’d expect a press release sometime between 4-5pm UK. That’s morning California, innit.
