PS2 enters tenth year of life

Thursday, 5th March 2009 07:50 GMT By Patrick Garratt

PlayStation 2 was nine years old yesterday as noticed by the eagle eyes of Kotaku.

The machine launches on March 4, 2000, the Japanese release being followed in October and November of the same year in the US and Europe respectively.

PlayStation 2 has now sold more than 140 million units worldwide, making it easily the most popular under-the-TV games console ever made.

What’s the most popular over-the-TV games console ever, though, I wonder?

@Rhythm – you’ve missed some bloody classics then, fella. For a long time I only owned a Cube, but then I picked up a PS2 when I saw the first shots of Shadow of the Colossus and after a while it started taking over as my console of choice (despite my hatred for its controller).

Though I just tend to play my PS2 stuff on my PS3 these days. Still can’t believe I haven’t got round to completing Yakuza 2, especially as I loved the first so much.

@Hero of Canton: no I haven’t, because I’m playing through them all on my PS3 ;-)

Rez, SotC and ICO are all arse, but Yakuza 2, Tomb Raider Anniversary, FF12, Shadow of Memories, Okami and a few others have been superb.
