Criterion reveals Surf Island as premium Burnout content

burnoutparadise21.jpg

Criterion’s shown off Big Surf Island, a large piece of premium DLC for Burnout Paradise, saying the “location is all about massive jumps”. Amen to that.

The company reasoned why it expects you to pay for the download.

“We never expected to create anything this ambitious for the island, but as it progressed we got more and more excited about what it could become. (In fact, that’s the story of all our Downloadable Content),” it said on its site.

“Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience – the highlight of a year of incredible premium content. Burnout already delivers incredible value for money – literally hundreds of hours of gameplay with your original disk or PSN purchase, plus more with the free Cagney Pack and free Burnout Paradise Bikes.”

Lots through there, including shots.

The obvious question is “How much ?”

Whilst Criterion obviously get some leeway for giving away the bikes etc it’ll be interesting to see what the price is.

I guess there’s probably some suit studying graphs as I type…

Feels very TrackMania from the pic in the news story

Criterion have given us so much for free. I’d pay ten squids for another good expansion.

I don’t think they could charge a tenner given that’s half the cost of the game currently. It just wouldn’t sell enough.

I think they’d get over twice as many people buying it for a fiver. But 3:99 would be psycologically even better.

As I said, there’s probably a man studying a projected sales vs. cost graph as we type…

If we use the LBP DLC prices as a standard I would say about €40. ;)

I would pay up to €10 (but only if the prepaid cards are released by then.)

True, but you have to ask yourself, Syrok: Whommever would be foolish enough to pay that much for a visual enhancement?

If the LBP paid DLC bits are doing well, I may go and have to have a little cry in the corner again.

As far as Criterion are concerned, though, they really have given us a lot of great content for free. So I’d be willing to throw a fiver their way, they deserve it. I just hope they don’t use their past freebies as a form of leverage to charge ludicrous amounts of money for their DLC. I don’t want to lose the respect I have for them, too.

So I’ll be waiting with baited breath. If it’s £5 or lower though, I can live with that, considering that it really does seem more genuine than most paid DLC content (i.e.: It wasn’t mentioned right after the game’s release, it doesn’t really look like it was an actual part of the original game, and so on … I’m looking at you, Fable II and Fallout 3). I just hope they won’t hop on the soulless shilling train that so many developers have lately…

Innocent until proven guilty though, in their case, I’m quite willing to wait and see.

I suppose they are selling enough of them, otherwise the prices would have gone down. :/

You cannot compare a big new expansion against a discounted game that’s been out ages and sold well.
