Star Wars’ fan-base is in the “tens of millions,” EA has said, and BioWare’s MMO The Old Republic will take advantage of the weight of numbers by its commitment to quality.
“We think the potential could be gigantic,” EA Games president Frank Gibeau told VG247 in San Francisco last week.
“The universe of Star Wars is endless and has tens of millions of fans, and BioWare doesn’t get out of bed in the morning unless they can make a 90-rated game.
“The idea of a story-driven RPG set in the Star Wars universe from those guys is a pretty powerful idea.”
Gibeau added that the game is a bigger concern than Mythic’s Warhammer Online.
“Actually it is,” he answered when asked specifically if was a “bigger project” than the recently-released WoW competitor.
“It’s a massive undertaking and we’re very excited.”
There’s no release date on The Old Republic as yet.

Are there more Star Wars nerds than World of Warcraft nerds? How much do those two nerd societies overlap? And when a nerd swings both ways, would he ultimately prefer Star Wars or WoW? It will be interesting to see whether SW: KotOR can make a dent in the WoW userbase.

I think the big question is whether or not it can appeal outside the Star Wars fan-base. It might be the best game in the world, but surely there’s got to be a ton of people that just say, “Star Wars: meh.”

From my understanding after reading a while in the community area they really wish to challenge “World Of Warcraft”.
Are they really going to put up a fight? i am unsure, it does seem many people are excited about this game.
But as a SWG vet i am not happy about this at all.. (you can figure why..), oh well, keeping my fingers crossed for some company with the guts to go where SWG did, and not tail WoW.
