Part 1 of PS3 Firmware 2.40 walkthrough video shows new XMB features

Sony’s released the promised walkthrough video of PS3 Firmware 2.40. Watch it after the break.

The movie shows PSN boss Eric Lempel talk through how in-game XMB will work after the update.

This is only the first part of the tutorial, with a second to follow shortly, says The Playstation Blog.

There’s no release date for 2.40 yet, other than “soon”. Which hopefully means “this week”.

Does exactly what it says on the tin really.

I’d hope you get some sort of in-game notice when a new message appears, and from the sounds of that, selecting your own music doesn’t automatically turn off the actual game music, which is maybe a limitation of having this feature parachuted in after the launch of the console.

Overall though, better late than never.

Yeah, it didn’t show a notification. I assume it must do, though.

Seems like such a minor thing, but I really like how you can switch PSN games without going back to the main XMB to choose first. :)

All looks pretty slick to me. Some nice features in there.

Its a minor point but is there any reason why pushing the PS button couldn’t pause the game automatically, I can’t think of a situation where you wouldn’t want to pause it to access the menu. Obviously you couldn’t pause an online game.
