Six Mods Final Fantasy XV Desperately Needs
Mods are "go" for Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, and the game sure can benefit from a little fan-tinkering. Here's how.

Final Fantasy XV is coming to PC early next year, and hot damn, does it ever require a lot of hard drive space. There are notable benefits to playing the game on PC, however, not the least of which is mod support.
Yes, Final Fantasy XV's director, Hajime Tabata, has confirmed mods for Final Fantasy XV. "I think one of the biggest things [PC] players can expect is mod support," Tabata told Rock Paper Shotgun's Brendan Caldwell at Gamescom. "We definitely want to do it. We haven’t actually managed to get our full modding policy or discussions on that finished but at the moment we do really want to do it. We’ll have the full details around autumn time."
"I think a lot of people do want the mods as free as possible," Tabata added, "and with as few limitations from our side as possible."
RPG fans have already proven several times over that they're endlessly creative with their mods – sometimes distressingly so – and Final Fantasy XV is a game that can really benefit from both simple and complex fan alterations.
Here are some mods I want to see in Final Fantasy XV. I'm sure you can think of a few more. Expert mode: Try to think up some mods that don't involve the word "nude."
Better Chocobos
The Final Fantasy series' birbs of burden get you where you need to go in Final Fantasy XV, but they can benefit from a tune-up because they're kind of dumb. For starters, I'd like to see a mod that keeps them from slamming into each other when the boys are riding them at full-tilt. And how about a black Chocobo that can fly anywhere, a la Final Fantasy IV?
I'd also like to use the MP3 player while on Chocoback. It's possible to do so in the vanilla version of the game, but only by exploiting a trick / bug. It'd be nice to be able to easily access the player and switch out songs while I'm riding.
("But you should keep both hands on the Chocobo at all times, Nadia—")
Don't tell me how to drive my Chocobo.
A more robust overworld
As someone who took a lot of road trips in her day, I really enjoy whipping down Final Fantasy XV's dusty roads and visiting its greasy diners while blasting J-E-N-O-V-A. I also enjoy pulling over to hack up my own food when money's a bit low (not an option I have while travelling on the Interstate). Unfortunately, Final Fantasy XV's overworld is a bit anemic overall, and it seems especially empty and desolate in this post-Breath of the Wild world. Nothing that can't be fixed with a couple of good mods, I think. Some more enemies and some more quests should make the open-world aspect (i.e. the best aspect) of Final Fantasy XV even better.
Regalia customization out the wazoo
Square-Enix has souped up the Regalia quite a bit since Final Fantasy XV's initial launch, not to mention you can already buy and apply tons of skins to the noble vehicle. There's always room for improvement, though. I want to slap Boris Vallejo cheesecake all over the Regalia. Imagine driving that back to Insomnia, somehow. "Look, dad! I made it better!"
God Mode all day, every day
You're not supposed to be able to activate Final Fantasy XV's "God Mode" wherever, whenever, but it can be done with a whole lot of save file wizardry. Surely a clever modder can make the process pain-free.
Skins, skins, skins, clothes, clothes, clothes
Final Fantasy XV already offers an array of costumes and clothing. Some are elegant, whereas others make Noctis look like he spent the entirety of the Moogle-Chocobo Carnival behind a dumpster, sucking down the dregs of Kenny Crow's mystery drink from discarded bottles. I'm excited to see what modders come up with, though. Can we get, say, a Sabin costume for Gladiolus? Bonus points if it lets him inexplicably suplex cars, trains, and other objects he has no business suplexing.
Other rideable critters
Look. I just want to ride a Behemoth, all right? Someone who's smarter and more skilled than myself needs to make it happen.
