Newell: Sony should be rewarded for allowing third-party PSN integration

Valve's Gabe Newell has said Sony should be commended for allowing third-parties to integrate services through its PlayStation Network.

Speaking in an interview with Develop, Newell said allowing Valve to integrate Steam into PSN with eventually benefit Sony fro being so flexible with its online network.

“They’ve done the scary thing and I think it’s up to us as developers to make sure Sony and its customers are rewarded," he said. “With the release of the first Portal 2 DLC people will really see the value of Sony allowing Steam to be released on their system. I think you’ll see us pushing very hard in increasing the overall play value of Portal 2.

“I think not only us but other developers are benefiting from Sony’s approach. We and other developers have to show we’re creating value to Sony for opening up its network. We have to show them it’s a smart business move."

Newell went on to say that it is “absolutely important” that Portal 2 see success on PS3, as well as games from developers like CCP, which will see Dust 514 PC players gaming alongside PS3 users through PSN.

“We need to reward Sony for making this decision," Newell added. "We need to prove Sony is right.”

Portal 2's first DLC will be released during mid-September.
