Destiny Red Bull promotion succumbs to scammers

Destiny and Red Bull are no match for the powers of the Internet.

Destiny players can gain access to various goodies by entering codes found on cans of Red Bull – or they could, before scammers brought the system down.

Kotaku reports some clever clog figured out how to generate codes for the promotion, allowing anyone to go and redeem them.

The generated codes seem to have been identical to those printed on cans, as legitimate purchasers have reported being unable to cash theirs in.

The Red Bull Destiny promotional website has since gone offline, either due to traffic from eager scammers or in response to the exploit, thereby ruining it for everybody.

I have no idea how Activision and Red Bull will retrieve this situation, as they’ve potentially left countless players with nothing to show for their Red Bull purchases besides a sugar hangover and an elevated heart rate. It’s pretty bad PR, so expect a proportional response.

I can’t say I felt especially good about this promotion in the first place (although that may be due because the Red Bull branded gear offends my personal aesthetic sensibilities) but it’s a shame to ruin it for those who just wanted to take advantage of the XP boost, gear and early access to The Taken King content.
