Destiny: The Taken King is definitely a thing, y’all.

Destiny’s next expansion is called The Taken King and will add the long-anticipated third subclass, according to a new leak.

Promotional materials sent to Kotaku suggest the expansion will be a bigger deal than The Dark Below or House of Wolves, with a cover price of $40.

The usual additions of strikes and PvP maps will be accompanied by a new raid tackling Oryx, one of the Hive’s biggest baddies, apparently. Oryx is the father of Crota, last seen being thoroughly owned by Guardian’s in The Dark Below’s raid, Crota’s End.

The leak suggests each of the three classes will receive a new subclass, giving them access to a third elemental variant:

  • Hunter: gravity bow super (Void)
  • Warlock: electrical storm super (Arc)
  • Titan: flaming hammer (Solar)

The expansion will release on September 15, according to the leaked materials, which lines up with Activision’s promise of a major launch during northern autumn and well-known details of Bungie’s release plan for the series.

Obviously you can’t take this information as fact, but I have a good feeling about it for two reasons. First, Kotaku has an excellent track record for leaks of this kind. Second, much of this sounds very familiar to details dropped in past Destiny leaks and data mining, which in themselves proved to be pretty accurate.

Bungie hasn’t commented on the matter yet, but Red Bull pretty much confirmed the name The Taken King after it leaked via trademark registrations.

Bungie has teased new Destiny information at E3 2015, which we expect to be details of this expansion, and probably a Game of the Year style re-release as well.
