Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn tallied 50,000 downloads in 24 hours

Fan-made sequel Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn has received a warm reception.

Writing on IndieDB, project lead Tolwyn said the game had been downloaded 50,000 times in the first 24 hours following its March 22 release.

Only the PC version is available at the moment, but Mac and Linux releases are expected to follow.

Wing Commander Saga took ten years to make, and not just because it's an entirely fan-driven effort - it sports 55 missions, two campaigns, more than 70 cutscenes and 11,000 lines of dialogue from 60 voice actors.

The Wing Commander franchise belongs to EA, which turns a blind eye to non-commercial projects like this; the series has been dormant since a 2007 spin-off, and the last core entry released in 1996.
