Cryptic Studios has announced the Legacy of Romulus expansion for Star Trek Online has gone live. STO players can choose to play as a Romulan or Reman through new story-driven mission arcs, and Denise Crosby returns to reprise her role as Empress Sela. New Romulan ships and enemies have been added and the Klingon faction has also been updated with full level 1-50 progression. Legacy of Romulus, the first expansion to Star Trek Online, has a new video and screenshots available. Set for release in May, the expansion contains numerous content additions such as the playable Romulan and Reman speciesm the ability to pilot the Romulan Warbird class starships with their Singularity Core and speaking of factions, every faction will be playable from the beginning of the game as of the update. The Tholian Reputation system will also be put into place. It’s a large update, and you can get a glimpse of it below.

Just a head up for those who play Star Trek Online of Champions Online: starting tomorrow, July 12, Cryptic Points will convert over to Perfect World’s ZEN currency. The move will squash any confusion over currency by making things simpler. You can learn more here.

Cryptic has announced that lifetime subscribers to Star Trek Online or Champions Online will automatically be give access to the Neverwinter closed beta. Invites will be handed out over the course of the testing period. Star Trek Online content designer Dan “Gozer” Griffis has announced he’s leaving Cryptic Studios to pursue other opportunities. Griffis responded to his departure on the game forums stating: “I will be leaving if a few weeks for a new opportunity. That’s pretty much all of it. It has nothing to do with PvP, STO, or Cryptic. It’s just time for me to do something different. I had planned on telling everyone on the forums at some point, but probably closer to when I was actually leaving (I’ll be here for a few more weeks).” The MMO’s PvP will be handed off to another developer he said. Griffis previously left Cryptic in 2010 but returned after a short while.

Lead artist Jeremy Mattson has outlined the conceptual process behind Star Trek Online’s upcoming starbase content. In a developer blog, Mattson describes drawing on the franchise’s visual history, fitting in with Starfleet’s aesthetic, and making the bases grand but not unbelievably so. There’s some pretty lovely space art. Starbases are expected in Season Six.

Cryptic has announced the relaunch of Star Trek Online in Europe to support its French and German languages, along with a vow to include more event timeslots in Europe. To celebrate the addition of Deutsch and Français, a double-XP bonus weekend begins this weekend starting April 2 for all players in all regions. Players will also receive a skill point and bridge officer point boost, and a free IDIC Tribble which provides a buff to your character based its class. Get all three three buffs at once, players will receive and additional boost to damage, health regeneration and resistance. Get more information via the official website.
