Guild Wars developer ArenaNet has posted details of its 8th anniversary event, which marks the original game’s milestone. Celebrations will kick off April 22 and run to April 29.

ArenaNet and the folks over at Guild Wars 2 Guru have collaborated on a video in which development team members Tyler Bearce, Karl McClain and Johnathan Sharp discuss the “state-of-the-game”. According to Massively, the topics covered span balancing, matchmaking, Spirit Watch and future plans. The video is a bit long, so grab some refreshment before you start.

ArenNet has announced that the Guesting feature for Guild Wars 2 will launch with the January update. The feature allows players to “visit” different worlds (servers) temporarily, so they can quest with friends and other members of the community. Think of it as visiting the house next door but not taking up permanent residence. There are a few restrictions, which you can find outlined in the post. Free server transfers will also go the way of the Dodo with the update, so if you want to change worlds without paying anything, you will need to do it before it goes live on January 28.

The Wintersday even in Guild Wars 2 starts tomorrow, and runs through January 3. To celebrate the festivities, ArenaNet as released another batch of screenshots. Guild Wars 2 players have been running into some issues with grouping, with many party members getting lost within the MMO’s overflow servers. ArenaNet studio head and co-founder Mike O’Brien has said the team is aware of the issue, but until players spread out more into the game world, it’s going to happen.

Blizzard issued a response regarding the inability to access Battle.net or World of Warcraft servers from Iran. According to the post, the issue stems from applied US sanctions instead of government bans on specific content – although the latter is still true as well.

ArenaNet has announced that close to 1.2 billion hours have been spent playing Guild Wars. The actual figure currently stands at 1,172,940,800 hours, which is 133,806 years worth of playtime. ArenaNet has announced the first public Guild Wars 2 beta weekend will occur next weekend on April 27. The fun will end though on April 29. More testing weekends will be announced at a later date, so if you miss out on this one, you will have another opportunity to participate in the future. To get a beta key, you can pre-purchase the game to get instant access or if you have signed up for it previously, check your mail boxes. Beta sign-ups are currently closed. More details on the first beta weekend will be announced via a blog update soon.

Guild Wars 2 designers Ben Miller and Jon Peters have told PC Gamer that the class system in Guild Wars 2 was inspired by Valve’s Team Fortress.

Massively has posted a video showing off its time in World vs World PvP during the second press beta for Guild Wars 2. as you will see in the video below, all players taking part in the instanced battles will receive a level boot to 80, with the only differences between players being their gear and skillsets. Players will be assigned to one of three teams depending on their server, and the winning realm will receive a a server-wide bonus called Power of the Mists which grants a bonus to health, crafting and combat XP, and more. Check out the video below. Guild Wars 2 is out later this year.

ArenaNet has released a video which features the team discussing its Game Design Manifesto for Guild Wars 2. According to the developers, when creating the MMO, it had three main themes to adhere to: making an MMORPG a great RPG, rethinking combat, and making the MMO more social. You can watch it for yourself below, or if you would rather read about it, the Manifesto has been posted on the official site since 2010. You should still watch it, though. The next closed beta is scheduled for later this month and the game will be released this year.
