Dragon Quest IX ships 5.3 million units
Square Enix has announced that worldwide shipment figures for Dragon Quest IX have topped 5.3 million units as of December 2010, making the title the largest selling in the series’ history. It’s the first title in the series to go over the 5 million mark. The series overall has shipped 57 million units.

Dragon Quest IX sells 1 million units in US, Europe

Nintendo’s revealed that Dragon Quest IX has sold 1 million units in Europe and US since its release last summer. To be exact, the RPG has sold 1.02 million units since it launched last July in the west on DS. Japanese figures weren’t announced by Nintendo, as the game was published in Japan by Square Enix.

Party time for Square Enix: Dragon Quest IX is the best selling game of 2009 in Japan, according to Famitsu, with the game selling over 4.1 million units.

Dragon Quest IX bestselling global game in Q3, top five listed
Dragon Quest IX was the bestselling videogame across Japan, the US and UK in the third quarter, according to joint data from NPD, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain.
And yes: it was only released in Japan. Here’s the top five:
- Dragon Quest IX (Square Enix) – 3,925,000
- Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) – 3,014,000
- Madden NFL 10 (EA) – 2,612,000
- Pokémon HeartGold And SoulSilver (Nintendo) – 2,068,000
- Halo 3: ODST – 1,847,000
The stats-tracker added that combined software sales in the three regions dropped 6 percent in the quarter.
Japan was up 15 percent, compared to a 20 percent drop in the same in 2008. That said, year-to-date sales in Japan are down 9 percent.

Dragon Quest IX in top 15 best selling games of all time in Japan
Dragon Quest IX is already in the top 15 best selling games of all time in Japan, two and a half months after going on sale.
Thats according to a list compiled of the top 50 biggest selling games of time in the land of the rising sun, going from the Famicom to today’s systems.
The game lands in at 13 on the list with lifetime sales of 3.8 million. But it isn’t enough to overthrow Pikachu and Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow from the No. 1 spot.

Wada obsessed with Dragon Quest IX
No, seriously.
Speaking in a weekly column for Nikkei, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has admitted he is seriously obsessed with Dragon Quest IX.
How obsessed? He culmated 30 hours in the first four days after the game was released in Japan in July.
You’re proper hardcore now, Wada-san, innit.
But he doesn’t just play for the enjoyment. He also plays to see what makes a good game at Square Enix, what makes a hit over there and what to do next with a game in development.

Dragon Quest IX sales drop below 100,000 in Japan
Weekly sales of Dragon Quest IX have dropped below 100,000 units for the first since its July launch in Japan, with Nintendo’s Tomodachi Collection taking the top spot.
DQIX fell to 79,000 units for the week ended August 23, according to Media Create, down from the prior week’s 127,000 units. The game has sold over 3.7 million units in Japan to date.

Dragon Quest IX – “Definitive decision” not yet made on western launch
Square told VG247 today that a final decision on launching Dragon Quest IX outside Japan is yet to be made.
“DQIX is currently being considered for release outside of Japan,” said the company by email.
“When a definitive decision is made about the release we will make an official statement.”
It first came to light that the publisher was only “considering” releasing the game in the US and Europe yesterday.
The DS RPG’s now shipped more than 3.5 million units in Japan.
