Sony has announced a new premium headset for PlayStation 4. Called the Platinum, the headset is wireless and is capable of delivering 7.1 virtual surround sound, built on Sony's proprietary 3D audio tech.

The Platinum Wireless Headset is due to launch January 12, priced $160/£128. The design also features a hidden, noise-cancelling mic. As for 3D audio, it's the same used with PS VR games, though in this case you won't need the breakout box. It will also work with the headset companion app.

Upcoming games will take advantage of this feature, including MLB The Show 17, Days Gone, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Speaking of Uncharted, Uncharted 4 will be patched in January to add support for the feature, making it the first game to do so.

To go with the announcement, Sony released a developer diary featuring developers from Naughty Dog talking up the headset.
