IO Interactive has confirmed that Hitman saves made while online will remain incompatible with those made offline.

Speaking with Eurogamer, a spokesperson for the developer said the issue has to do with Hitman being a “live game” experience.

“When we announced Hitman, we explained to fans and to gamers everywhere how we are creating a live game,” Eurogamer was told. “This is a constantly evolving, living world of assassination, that will grow alongside the community with frequent content updates in between the launch of each location.

“It is possible to enjoy the locations offline, but in order to ensure player-progress of the live content is correct and up to date, the save states for online and offline are kept separate.”

In other words, for saves to continue to sync, the player needs to be online at all times when playing Hitman. Should they play offline, the saves will not sync, and this includes instances of losing Internet an connection or being kicked off the game server.

Of the latter, many Hitman owners have reported being kicked back to the game’s main menu during play when the servers lose connection.

It’s possible IO will offer an alternative saving method down the road – especially when the physical edition hits – but not in the foreseeable future, it seems.
