16% of developers working on VR games per new GDC Industry Report

The annual GDC State of the Industry report has been released, and it shows an ever so slight decline in development interest on PC, 3DS and Wii U. It seems, though, developers are especially interested in developing games for Virtual Reality.

The report shows that among those surveyed, 16% of developers have VR titles in the works compared to 7% in 2015. Oculus Rift was the most popular platform among current VR developers. 15% of developers stated they planned to incorporate VR in to their next game, up from 6% in 2015.

75% of developers said they believed both the VR and Augmented Reality sector was a "sustainable business," but 27% felt adoption "will ever match current console install-base."

40% said said the AR/VR would exceed console adoption rate with 1% expecting it to occur by 2018; 44% expect it to happen by 2026 and 54% by 2030.

Other figures on VR: 38% predict VR/AR hardware would be in 10% of US homes by 2020; 86% predict it will be in homes by 2030; 9% said it will never happen.

When it came to console, PC and handheld development, PC development was down 4% to 52%. In 2015, the figure stood at 56% of development on PC.

Active development on Wii U and 3DS titles were down 1%, respectively, while active development on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were up 1% over last year. (PS4 27% - up from 26%; Xbox One 23% - up from 22%).

Also of note, nearly 90% of developers believe that eSports is a sustainable, long-term business - up by 8% compared to the opinion stated last year.

Results were based on feedback received from 2,000 North American game developers ahead of GDC 2016 in March.

A more detailed look at the report can be found over on the official GDC website.
