Free-to-play games have a "real market" on consoles, says SOE boss

Free-to-play games have a "real market" on consoles, according to Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley, citing the success of the firm's DC Universe Online.

Speaking with Gamaustra, Smedley pointed to the firm's superhero MMO as just one example of a successful F2P game on consoles, noting that the game as 3 - 3.5 times the monetization rate on PS4 than on PC.

"The PS4 [version] has been monetizing amazingly well," he said. "Seeing that kind of difference in pay rate between the PC and the PS4 is really astounding -- it shows there’s a real market there.”

PS3 players of the MMO are also monetizing double the rate of PC players.

Smedley attributed the game's success on PS4 to being one of the first F2P games released for the console.
