Wednesday, 18 December 2013 13:47 GMT By Dave Cook

Rosalina in Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8! A Zelda and Dynasty Warriors crossover! A new Chibi Robo game! Dr. Luigi on Wii U! NES Remix! Get all the news and trailers in here, friends.

Today’s Nintendo Direct stream can be found through the link, and will focus on Nintendo’s 3DS and Wii U slate from now until Spring 2014.

The stream opened with president Satoru Iwata promised some news on Wii U and 3DS titles.

First, a new collaborative effort promised to combine the action of Tecmo Koei’s ‘Warriors’ series with Zelda. It showed Link cutting through scores of enemies hack-and-slash style, fighting huge monsters on a battlefield and opening a chest with that classic musical sting. The project’s working title is Hyrule Warriors. It’s due for Wii U and is not to be considered the next core Zelda title.

The bloody gorgeous and dangerously cute Kirby: Triple Deluxe on 3DS was next. A new clip showed off Kirby’s new ‘Hyper Nova’ ability, which charges up his suction attack to crazy levels. The dream prince has four new abilities and must dodge threats coming from the background and foreground.

Triple Deluxe comes with two new modes. The first is Kirby Fighters, which is a four-player fight mode that sees combatants battling online using new abilities. You can play solo against AI if you wish. Next is Dedede’s Drum Dash, which sees the tyrant king jumping on drums in time with the music to collect coins along to classic Kirby songs from across the series.

Next, Yoshi’s New Island was confirmed as still in development at Nintendo, along with a new trailer that showed him gobbling up a giant Shy Guy to produce a huge egg. As ever, Mario was perched on Yoshi’s rump looking adorable. The game is out Spring 2014.

Iwata teased that the 3DS e-Shop will receive a new Chibi Robot title – Chibi Robo: Photo Finder – in which the metallic hero must help a museum prosper. he’s been enlisted by the museum’s curator to snap objects using his camera. You need to find real world objects, snap them with your 3DS and fit orders sent by the curator.

Once snapped, the images will become objects in the game that the curator will add to exhibitions. Lots of people need help around the museum, but Chibi Robo needs to watch his power supply at all times. Chibi Robo: Photo Finder is coming out in North America on January 9.

Iwata then confirmed that Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter will launch December 27, and a free 30-day trial will be available until the end of January. Use either service before September 30 and you’ll get Celebi for free.

Reggie Fils-Aime then confirmed that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is getting a free demo on the 3DS eShop that will deliver a side-story to the main game. It’s coming January 2.

Cranky Kong was then announced as playable in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Cranky and Donkey can unleash a team attack that turns all on-screen enemies into items. The game’s out February 21 on Wii U.

Sonic Lost World is getting two new pieces of DLC. First up is a Yoshi’s Island-themed world dubbed ‘Yoshi’s Island Zone.’ It comes with pipes, Shy Guys and other staples from Yoshi’s series, along with its classic soundtrack. The DLC is free and available now. Nintendo also teased some Zelda-themed content for the game in due course.

Wii Sport Club is getting golf today in Europe, and you’ll can sample a free 24-hour trial across golf, tennis and bowling via the Wii U eShop right now.

NES Remix was then announced. It takes 16 classic Nintendo titles such as Donkey Kong, Excitebike and The Legend of Zelda then mashes them up with new ideas and challenges. Its out today on Wii U at £8.99, and will reward players with 8-bit MiiVerse stamps:

The year of Luigi continues with Dr. Luigi, a new take on the NES original Dr. Mario. It hits the Wii U eShop on January 15 in Europe, priced £13.49, and to the US on December 31. It adds new gameplay modes, online battles and pesky L-shaped pills into the mix.

Iwata then explained that if you register or link your Nintendo Network ID on 3DS between December 10 and January 31, Nintendo will gift you a free download code for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Speaking of Mario, Super Mario Bros. 3 will hit the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Console on December 26. There will be discounts during launch week.

Big news for puzzle fans, as 3DS cross-over Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Versus Professor Layton was confirmed for European release on March 28th.

Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 then got trailers at the end. You can watch them below as soon as they go live, but interestingly, Rosalina and Luma were added to Sakurai’s brawler. Look:

The duo are also playable in Mario Kart 8 along with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. You can see them in the trailer below. Nintendo later confirmed in a press release that the racer will launch Spring 2014, and that he game’s vehicle roster currently includes UFOs, four-wheel ATV buggies, standard karts and bikes.

@9 Its coming off a bit desperate at this stage, yeah.

I’m half convinced there must be some sort of clause in place to encourage this sort of thing, like reduced licensing fees if you include nods to Nintendo franchise in your game or something. It’s very strange.

Today was supposed to be a good day for Ninty fans with an awesome Wii U sales boost in Japan…
    Then this came.

To be fair though, Ninty didnt try to generate false hype around this, unlike the VGX (god bless that atrocity).

I was afraid they wouldn’t show MK8 at all, meaning it wouldn’t be a Spring game. But they did and it looks great. I am also GLAD as hell that ain’t the new Zelda. Almost got a heartattack.

@12 Every single time I hear there’s going to be a new Nintendo Direct, I hold out hope beyond hope that it will be an episode wroth watching, that something great will finally be announced… 9 times out of 10, I’m left drowning in a pool of tragic tears, born of complete and utter disappointment.

This format isn’t working, its clear as day. They need to make big announcements at big stage, and not be a Scrooge and put them out in some YT videos.

Ninty hit with content ID claims by some shitty music company no one heard of.

Who else is afraid this new Tecmo Zelda means no TRUE Zelda in 2014 coming out? Will we see it during E3? Sure! But release? Don’t believe it for a sec.

    “big announcements”?

Haven’t seen one of those from Nintendo in a loooong time.

There won’t be a new Zelda next year.

  18. mistermogul

Thing I don’t get is why would Nintendo want to do a crossover with the Dynasty Warriors franchise when basically those games are er… shit?

@3 – dude go and stick your cock back in your xbox, you’re comments on Sony/Nintendo threads are tiring.

Was mainline Zelda ever planned for 2014 for Wii U? I seriously doubt it.

Then again, what else do they have for Christmas 2014?

Not that it matters though :P

    Bbbbbut Cranky Kong!

it´s full of great stuff. have you bought a ps4 yet? if so you´d know how depressing and average gaming can be despite being hyped through the roof and up to the moon. these games shown here all make me smile. the nintendo outputs are literally the games that keep making me excited about gaming in general to a huge degree. these and the rare gems like destiny, the souls games and some indie titles. every single one of the games shown here screams fun. i really don´t get how anyone cannot be excited about these games. i just don´t get it.

@22 I *love* Nintendo games… and I still think these all look charmless and boring.

About the only thing there that l found enjoyable looking was Smash Bros., and I’m fully aware that’s only because of personal bias since I really enjoy fighting games.

serioulsly. i hope nintendo wont ever listen to the guys wanting more “mature” stuff. they are delivering exactly what i want from them right now. the best games i have played the last 2 years have been on nintendo platforms, i just love miiverse…and people say that´s all not enough? ffs this is so mad.

    Dr Luigi? Seriously?

The only thing that I was remotely interested in was Wii U Sports Club Golf (fuck, what a title), as I thoroughly enjoyed 4-player Wii Sports Golf years ago.
Everything else, my god I’d take BF4 MP over all of them combined.

    A new character for SSB.
    Dr Luigi.
    NES Remix.
    Yoshi’s New Island.
    Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.
A Zelda spinoff of a distinctly sub-par franchise.

Seriously, PS4 and X1 are out, with Titanfall, Driveclub, Infamous coming early next year (not to mention Watch Dogs), and this is what they come out with? Plus Destiny, Crew, Division, Order Q3/Q4.

@23: they absolutely push all of my buttons. 2013 was so amazing with zelda link between worlds, sm3dw, luigi mansion2, fire emblem, pikmin, mario luigi dream team, windwakerhd, dkcr for the 3ds and so much more. now there´s the new kirby and the yoshi yarn and new island, the nes remix, the chibi robo game, mk and dkctf and smash bros. i want to play all of these so badly. it´s so much good stuff. it´s almost too much. i can´t see what´s wrong with that lineup, not at all. it´s almost perfect. for me it works pretty damn well, that´s why i don´t get all the negative reactions. they deliver what i want from them…it seems that people just want different things from nintendo, maybe you wont get it. i hope so, because they are absolutely creating the games that i want :)

    #26 1 year ago
  27. mistermogul

@23 – Surely you gotta be looking forward to the new DK? Did you play the last one on Wii? If not you should. Platforming at its best…

Also MK looks good but I hope they’ve sorted the rubber-banding out as it ruins it for me. You shouldn’t be penalised for doing well, it sucks.

@22 I agree, the next time I see a wii u in a good sale I’m picking one up. Sat through most of these vids with a big smile on my face which doesn’t really happy that often with other more modern games, sometimes just plain fun is good for a change

    #28 1 year ago
  29. Ireland Michael

@26 The fact that they’re all so completely devoid of original ideas that they literally feel like nothing more than visually up scaled takes on the exact same games we’ve already played before.

A Link Between Worlds is great, but that’s the exception, not the rule.

The company has somehow become incapable of innovating even within its franchises, which was *not* a problem in the past. It’s what they were good at… and that seems to have somehow gone completely in the span of a generation.

@28 Not even remotely. It looks stilted, sluggish and boring. After playing Rayman Legends, they all do.

You might not like the games, but a lot of people do. I don’t give a crap about Titanfall, The Crew, or The Order 1886.

Zelda X Dynasty Warriors looks great
    Mario Kart 8 looks amazing
DkC is going to be great
    Super Smash bros looks great
Kirby, Chibi Robo, Yoshi’s Island, Bravely Default, all look good.

Not to mention Nintendo still has: Bayonetta 2, Zelda Wii U, Monolith Soft’s X, and more projects we don’t know about

I suggest you stop coming to Nintendo articles if all you like is shooting and driving games.

I bought a WiiU the other week and I really actually like the console. Moreso than the PS4 which we’ve also bought. This may change eventually since the PS4 has sod all games out yet.

So it’s a real shame that they aren’t jumping on obvious opportunities on the console and instead releasing very average ideas.

    #31 1 year ago
  32. The_Red

Wait, is Nintendo making Hyrule Warriors or Koei? If it’s the former, I’d be genuinely interested. If it’s the latter, they can shove their 3 billion “Warriors” spin-offs and sequels up their asses.

    #32 1 year ago
  33. Ireland Michael

@30 His problem isn’t with the genres. That’s a lazy and self serving assumption.

His problem is with the lack of creative ideas.

@32 Probably Koei, with input from Nintendo. Kind of like how Other M was developed.

“have you bought a ps4 yet?”

“if so you´d know how depressing and average gaming can be”
You are right, that’s why I wont bother getting one until there are games that I’m interested in (KH3, FFXV, MGSV etc.).

” despite being hyped through the roof and up to the moon.”
Wasn’t the WiiU hyped too when it was released?

“the nintendo outputs are literally the games that keep making me excited about gaming in general to a huge degree.”
That’s good for you I guess. Nothing wrong with that.

“these and the rare gems like destiny, the souls games and some indie titles”
I think you are exaggerating a bit.

Also regarding PS4/XB1 lacking games, it’s obvious duh! Those systems are barely a month old but we know that some crazy ass AAA games are coming, exclusive and 3rd party, so everyone can get their fix. But with the WiiU on the other hand IMHO Nintendo hasn’t delivered anything ground-breaking yet, and it’s entering its 2nd year. By the time the XB1/PS4 reach 1 year in the market I’m sure most people wont have the same feeling as they do with the WiiU right now.

I wonder why it takes so long to make some great Zelda, Metroid games or new franchises. They’ve probably being/or could have been developing them from ~2011 or something.

Errr, I honestly can’t tell if you’re trolling.

“You might not like the games, but a lot of people do. ”

Knack outsold Super Mario 3D World.

“Zelda X Dynasty Warriors looks great”

Ever played a Dynasty Warriors game? TIP: They suck.

“more projects we don’t know about”

Errrrr. I know a lot of projects for PS4/X1 that we don’t know about that look awesome.

Dude, I like aaalll sorts of games (favourites this year were Rayman Legends, GTA, Last of Us, Diablo), but when Nintendo are remaking the same game for years and years and years, it’s hard not to dislike them. It’s like Mike said above, Link Between Worlds is the only game that’s got a remotely original idea in their current slate.

@Fin: from your list i only really want destiny

donkey kong country returns is the best 2d platformer i´ve played…probably ever. i´m on my third playthrough atm on the 3ds. i love that game, of course i am excited about tropical freeze. a lot.

nes remix is exactly what i want. the stamp thing is so awesome for miiverse. loving it.

i´m a huge fan of yoshis new island. so looking forward to it. it looks fantastic.

always had a soft spot for kirby. the 3ds footage looks like it´ll make me smile all the way through. day one.

    and so on….

playing a link between worlds right now, which is easily the best game i´ve played this year. i also play mario 3d world atm coop with my girlfriend. what can i say. it´s fantastic.

i bought a ps4. i like it but i experience tons of crashes on bf4 (a bugfest), the controllers r1 button was broken. yesterday i had fun online coop with a friend with resogun, then we had trouble with the voicechat. i then downloaded warframe and had to wait for ages for it to download.

i love gaming with nintendo. some obviously don´t. like i said. for me, they definitely deliver atm, much more so than at the wii and ds times, probably even gamecube. i truly love the direction they have been taken.

Try Rayman Origins/Legends, they’re the best 2d platformers I’ve ever played (Origins probably shades it overall).
They’re what a rebooted Sonic should’ve become, tbh.

Here we go again with people slagging Nintendo for no creativity!!

For years Nintendo aim their creativity inside their big franchises, the 2d wall painting move in the new 3Ds zelda is the most creative idea I have seen in years (outside of Indies) and it is used brilliantly.

Personally I will take the WiiU over the PS4/XboxOne for the next few years at least.

TitanFall/Destiny/Crew etc.. are creatively moribund from what I have seen but I am happy to be proved wrong when they come out.

IIRC when the WiiU launched it had similar problems, with day1 bricking-console firmwares and stuff like that, things that are common for new consoles.

I’m sure everyone knew that there were bound to be problems with the PS4/XB1 consoles too.

Which is exactly the problem, as I said in my above post. These games don’t seem to possess ant lack any of the creativity they are known for. They’re retreading old ground to the point of redundancy.

A Link Between Worlds is very much the exception, not the rule.

they either do not play the games but still feel like they can judge them, or they just don´t enjoy the nintendo style games but then, they could just move on and do not spoil the fun for everyone else.

This lineup must be great for nintendo nerds. I was only keen on MK8 and I must say that, at least from the trailer, I am not convinced. Sonic ASTransformed brought many nice things to the table and I feel like nintendo onlt tries to keep up with it in the HD worlds.

Oh well, knowing that nintendo delivers quality titles it may be hidden in the details but still.

And then there is Link Warrior Orochi. What. The. Fuck.

Okay, after all WiiU might not be my cup of tea. Thing is, I would like to have a reason to buy one but I aint see any. I think the 3DSXL is still the best choice for nintendo games.

I wouldn’t mind getting a Wii U, it has some nice if not the best couch co-op games in general, but I don’t have much time to dedicate on gaming, since my PC and PS3 are filling the gap. Still want to play some DS games that I missed and I’m interested to buy a 3DS if possible.

@56: 3ds would be a great choice, especially if you´ve mised out on some ds games. if i had to choose one gaming system, even with next gen included, i would, without a doubt, choose a 3dsxl.

i do not have that much time to play games anymore either and that being said, i feel more and more at home on nintendo systems anyway.

the more i think of it the wiiu is actually pretty great for a more busy and / or casual type of gamer. i guess that´s what they´ve had in mind with it. some cod and watchdogs and some family mario plus some single player zelda stuff.

i now have the ps4 and i will keep it but i shift more and more away from these so called ´hardcore´consoles. they feel unattractive and boring to me.

next next gen will probably be pc and nintendo for me.

    #59 1 year ago
  60. Ireland Michael

@53 I never said Killzone or Forza were creative. I’m not touching either of the new consoles for at least another year because they lack worthwhile titles for me so far.

This isn’t about Sony or Microsoft. This is about Nintendo.

I’m judging the Wii U entirely by the standards of itself, and as someone who has supported every generation of Nintendo hardware since the SNES, their current output simply isn’t doing it for me. They’ve lost their creative touch.

It used to be that every new game within a franchise, would always bring its own truly unique mechanics that genuinely mixed things up and made each new game feel completely fresh. These games don’t even have that. A Link Between Worlds is the the one major exception.

The handheld output has been fairly solid, no denying that. The Wii U is where the real problems are.

I don’t know what the hell is going on at Nintendo, but they’ve completely lost their spine,

Wow that “Zelda” game looks absolutely horrible. I have played every single Zelda game minus the 3DS to date and I have played enough dynasty warriors to know these two games shouldn’t be combined. This is far worse than Other M and seems desperate as if they can’t get a Zelda out for next year or two and just getting a title out the door for the WIi U.

Disappointed with Nintendo. Thanks Nintendo for confirming I don’t need a Wii any time soon.

As long as you judge other games on the same criteria, your fine.

For example Halo: same guns (maybe 2 new ones and a new vehicle), new story, but same enemies (maybe 2 new ones), etc…

New IPs obviously get a reprieve, unless all they bring to the table is new characters rather than gameplay.

Games tend to be held in high regard unless they are ‘toppled’. Sonic Transformed Racing and Rayman for example, have come closest to ‘toppling’ Nintendo franchises off their respective ‘throne’s’. That’s after many, many years at the top though.

Suddenly, Nintendo has lost it and are is news, apparently. That’s pretty fickle if you ask me.

Whilst it’s good to see announcement for Wii U, watching Nintendo rely so heavily on the same crutches is becoming weary. Add to that the increasing dilution of its signature brands it leaves a somewhat bitter taste in the mouth.

Yet again, Nintendo are preaching to the converted (rather than addressing the elephant in their conference room) who will valiantly echo and bang the drum of whatever their favoured brand does whilst concocting hypocriful theories that don’t really stand up to objective scrutiny.

It’s also a great shame that the praise calling out the wall-travelling mechanic in the 3DS Zelda game isn’t even a new idea. It’s from a game 3 years old that surfaced on a shhh.. better not mention the another console and also on PC.

This series of announcements from Nintendo, held up against the PR of boastful-but-hard-to-dispute “We are more committed to new IP than our competitors” article from earlier today show a stark contrast.

Times have changed. The industry is constantly evolving. Adapt or die.

“PS4 exclusive Knack debuts at 13 ahead of Super Mario 3D World on Wii U at 14. Yes, Knack sold more than Mario.”

Now, if I say “which sold more, Knack or Super Mario 3D World”, what’s the answer? I’ll even preface in with “in countries where both games are released, and there are sales figures for”.

Even though vgchartz is not a reliable source, it’s pretty obvious that SM3DW outsold Knack. Besides that, SM3DW is the kind of game that will still sell many copies even when the game is years old (like all other Mario titles do). Knack only sold a reasonable amount of copies because of it being a launch game for a new console. That and the fact that most other launch games for the PS4 are complete garbage.

Pretty disappointing Nintendo Direct for me. That new Zelda spin off is going to appeal to Dynasty Warriors fans, or fans of Musou style games in general, but to me it looks like shit.

I’m looking forward to Tropical Freeze, but I already knew about that. The Mariokart and Smash Games will basically just be more of the same games that we already own. I don’t feel like there’s anything new here. I was hoping against hope that we’d get a Metroid announce or something.

The Luigi game looks like fun, but in a world where you can get iPhone games just like it for buttons, the price feels very steep. I dunno… /sad-face

Have you tried NES remix? It’s very fun.

I wouldn’t be to upset as no single system contains all of life’s wonders. :)

    #91 1 year ago
  92. Telepathic.Geometry

I’m not interested in paying for or playing throwaway 8-bit NES game remixes on my new HD capable Wii U. And if Nintendo expects this and a reskin of a Warriors game to keep fans happy, I think they need to step up their game.

I still have Wonderful 101, and Pikmin 3 to clear, and I reckon Nintendoland and Zombie U will keep me going until Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze lands. But after I finish all of that by say March or April, what will there be? I’m not at all interested in Smash, so the best I can hope for is that Mariokart 8 is decent, that there’s a Metroid game coming in under the radar, and maybe that that mech game pans out.

But honestly, I think I’ll be looking at a game every three months for my Wii U at the absolute best. And there’s no technical reason why I couldn’t be playing most if not all of them on a PS4 or an xbone. None of them make significant if any use of the expensive controller.

Don’t get me wrong monkey, I love Nintendo games, and I take no joy in spouting all of this negativity, but for the first time in Nintendo’s history, I regret having bought their machine. For the first time ever, I actually think that there is a good argument to be made for Ninty going hardware agnostic. Maybe build their own proprietary controller and release it and their games on PS5 or something…

    #92 1 year ago
  93. Phoenixblight

There is no metroid game being made right now and if there is its just in pre-production. Retro just completed DK: TF this month and haven’t started their next project whether that is Metroid or another game it is unknown. So at best all you are waiting for is Mario Kart.

    #93 1 year ago
  94. monkeygourmet

It’s a fair point, one which I don’t share however.

I’m not saying NES remix should be a triple A experience (nor is Nintendo for that matter.), it’s just fun and good value, plain and simple.

We may have different financial incomes, but I haven’t got a problem with 1 exclusive a month on Wii U. That’s more than enough in my book, especially as they tend to be high quality. If I feel like splashing out, there are plenty of other games available, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t miss Nintendo’s output.

Maybe you should sell the Wii U and invest in a PS4 if you haven’t got one? (I still think PS4 looks to be pretty future proof at the moment).

    #94 1 year ago
  95. monkeygourmet

Are you saying only one game will release this coming year?

I know Nintendo fans will have slim (but quality) pickings, but do you actually have access to the Xbone / PS4 release schedule? How’s that looking?

Obviously third party will pad it out, but there isn’t anything that concrete yet, hence why I’m waiting.

    #95 1 year ago
  96. Phoenixblight

No I wasn’t saying that I assume all these games announced today were coming out 2014(?) I was going off what TG was saying with not wanting Smash or Warriors reskin.

As far as PS4 schedule goes:

Thats most of them some of them don’t have dates and I am not sure are coming in 2014 like the Division but majority are there. Plus there are few missing like Uncharted.

    #96 1 year ago
  97. monkeygourmet

    That’s fair enough.

    Nice list, but apart from:

The Order (I’ll get my PS4 when this comes out)
    Drive Club
    And maybe Indie stuff?

A lot of it is available elsewhere. I’m not saying its terrible btw, just that the first year will be very much a time for MS & Sony to let their consoles ‘find their feet’. Wii U did that too, just forgot to get up! ;)

Unless Sony & MS have lots more stuff releasing in 2014 (I’m sure there is some), Nintendo should just about manage an exclusive once a month or so. Obviously they are missing out on third party (that will not change in 2014), but like always, they hold their own based on quality. That doesn’t translate to sales though, as you can see in Mario 3D World vs Knack.

I’ve been here in this situation (people angry / complaining / insert other emotion here) regarding Nintendo since they lost Final Fantasy 7 to Sony in the N64 days. While things aren’t rosy for the Wii U, no amount of bitching will remove the fact it’s nailing it with quality titles.

    #97 1 year ago
  98. Phoenixblight

Not sure where you are getting an exclusive a month, link(?), SO far all we know about 2014 is Smash, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart and DK: Tropical Freeze. THere is no way they will have 12 exclusives out next year.

    #98 1 year ago
  99. Telepathic.Geometry

@monkey: I have no financial problems at all, so that’s not it. It’s really just down to time, and the best possible use of that gaming time.

Next year, I will most likely buckle like a little bitch and buy a PS4 at launch, and play Infamous: Second Son, Thief, RESOGUN, The Witness, Contrast and Watchdogs plus whatever other gems drop that I haven’t been able to play yet (e.g. Fez, Bastion). Also, on the PS3, I’ll be playing R&C: Nexus, Dark Souls II, Castlevania 2 and polishing off my extensive PS3 game collection.

So what it is is, I want Ninty to poach me off of that system with new games. But if you look at some of the names of the games I just mentioned, most of them are not available on Wii U, and even if they are, they are pretty inferior on the Wii U. I have heard that Rayman Legends is best on Wii U, so that’s where I’ll play it, but that’s unfortunately a rare exception.

Can you imagine that I will be persuaded to stop playing on my PS3 by a NES remix? Or by a (I’m sorry, but) shitty looking musou game with a link skin? Come on.

THE POINT: My point here really is that now that Ninty have lost 3rd party support more completely than ever before, they need to step their game way the fuck up. WAY WAY WAY the fuck up. This is not sufficient. I am worried about the future of that company, because if Ninty were to decline and one day disappear from the gaming world like Sega more or less has, that would be an absolute tragedy. :(

Hey, that’s cool man. If all of those games float your boat, then that’s gravy, and I’m happy for you. And for those of you who can subsist on a diet of Wii U alone, more power to you. I don’t want to give the impression that I just wanna hate on Nintendo.

I only hate the corporate structure at Nintendo, I absolutely love the devs.

That’s why I was careful By saying:

“Nintendo should just about manage an exclusive once a month or so”

Notice; ‘should’, ‘just about’ and ‘or so’… ;)

It’s just weird people seem to talk about Nintendo in a critical light, then mention loads of other console possibilities. No one is saying you have to just have one (or even 2!)…

You haven’t mentioned Xbox? Is that at the bottom of your pile? PC? It sounds like you want to justify a 1 system scenario and are basing your choices on that?

Also, I meant the opposite RE finances. One game a month is pretty extravagant for some people.

    Poly already said he doesn’t just own a a Wii U. :)

(I’m also not keen on the Zelda game btw!)

WIth the lack of third party, Nintendo has put themself in a horrible spot. They have to either find a way to produce enough games to stay relevant or find a way to make 3rd party devs think they are still relevant and develop for their system. They have to, not every single person that buys a Nintendo Console will get Smash, Mario Kart, or Zelda nor are they going to wait a year or two hoping announcement on their favorite IPs that is why I sold my Wii. It was collecting dust for 7 months with no titles that interest me in sight. Their current model is not working.

This Zelda announcement is a huge turn off for me. It is the first time ever where I wasn’t interested in a Zelda game.

Let’s get down to brass tacks though, you do enjoy Sony consoles / titles. :)

There is a fantastic Zelda game out right now, if you are really interested. Also, even lacking third party stuff, Wii U has some pretty amazing titles, many scoring the highest in recent times coupled with new IPs and variety.

I think you are just VERY happy with Sony and what you can get on that system (PS3/4/Vita), and there is no shame in that.

Well duh but that doesn’t mean anything. I am not a fanboy I also play on the PC and one point I had a PS2 and Gamecube and I enjoyed playing on both systems. I would like to get back in that age where I have a Nintendo system and a Sony system but their titles alone are not interesting to me. SO far all I care for is DK: Tropical Freeze and possibly Mario 3D World nothing more than that. And its not a matter of wanting mature titles as I just played for the last 3 weeks Ratchet and Clank HD, Future series and Into the Nexus. I will not buy a 300$ device for a handful of games its Nintendo’s job to make themself relevant to me and they failed to do so for 2 generations now.

    #106 1 year ago
  107. monkeygourmet

That’s cool. But, I presume you at least played certain titles?

If you are involved in games or art, you would look like a bit of an idiot if you bypassed Nintendo titles because of personal opinion.

Even as a curio, Mario Galaxy is widely regarded as the best game from ‘last gen’. From an artistic perspective (using a weaker systems strengths), to a gameplay perspective, you’ll be hard pushed to find better.

A lot of people ask a lot of a Nintendo, yet they didn’t actually buy any of their consoles or games. Gamecube flopped because of this, even though it had many hardcore and fan service games.

It gets to the point where you have to ask: What do you want?! :)

Not directed at you personally, but:

    Did you buy:

    1080 GameCube
    F Zero Game Cube
    Chibi Robo
    Star Fox GaMe Cube
    Endless Ocean
    No more Heroes
    Zack and Wiki
    Eternal Darkness
    Resi 4
    P 100
    Fatal Frame

    Etc, etc…

Nintendo HAVE released these titles and new IPs before (and continue to do so) people don’t want them, then want them years later and say how good the previous Nintendo console was… Been here many times before…

    N64 – Doomed
    DS – Doomed
    GameCube – Doomed
    Wii – Doomed
    3DS – Doomed
    Wii U – Doomed

Hmmmmm… Is there a pattern here?!

But, of course a Wii U is different to all of those, it’s a different time. Like how it was a different time for all those previous Nintendo consoles…

    #107 1 year ago
  108. Telepathic.Geometry

@Monkey: Yeah, xbone would be at the very bottom of the list for me. I’m not interested in competitive multiplayer, ‘hardcore’ shooters, sports/driving simulation games so, there’s not an awful lot on xbone that I would be interested in at all, or that I couldn’t get elsewhere.

I’m also not interested much in a PC, but that’s really just down to the cost and the hassle. Especially in Japan, putting together a PC is expensive and no walk in the park. That’ll change when the Steambox appears though. :)

And for the record, the way I view the Wii U is as a 2nd machine, and even in that capacity it’s not doing well enough. My reasons are not that there aren’t enough games though. My reasons are that there aren’t enough unique games. Even on the gamecube or on the Wii, there weren’t too many games, but all of those games were experiences games I couldn’t play anywhere else, so even if over its lifetime I only got a couple dozen games, they were all gold-dust to me.

Nice, this has finally turned into “Wii U is not doomed, stop saying it” thread, obviously ignoring reality helps.
    “N64 – Doomed
    DS – Doomed
    GameCube – Doomed
    Wii – Doomed
    3DS – Doomed
    Wii U – Doomed”
Care to also add in the fact that Wii U is selling less than every other console on that list?

You quoted a very succinct point.
“Vita being dead wont stop me from enjoying it”
Can you say the same for your Wii U (which sells less than Vita for most part of the year), or not?

    But… You… Haven’t… Even… Finished……

    ….all your games…. Or… Even… Started Zombi U?!

I think you just need to chill a bit, don’t think it’s going to be the best thing ever, just enjoy what’s there. Not saying you have to, but it doesn’t look like you’ve used a Miiverse at all? Give it a try, it’s fun! ;) follow people to get updates and generally give all the features a go. Couch multiplayer? Have you tried that? It’s a huuuuge part of the console and it’s games.

Single player? Def give Zombi U a go. If not, There’s always the PS4, but that’s a given, it’s not going anywhere.

“Can you say the same for your Wii U?”

Yes, hence why I’ve been recommending a PS4 as an alternative for many posts… Wii U is obviously ‘dead’, still, weirdly, that doesn’t stop it having the highest rated game this Christmas… Or the fact it has many good games, same as a Vita.

Your bullshit sales rhetoric means you’ve happily thrown the ‘Vita’ on the pile, just to attack the Wii U. Both systems are still ‘alive’ and have many amazing games coming for them. But, of course, Tearaway is shit because it bombed… Derp derp…

I have a PC that makes next gen look like shit, Vita, PS3, 360, 3DS… I’m fine thanks. Enjoy waiting for Persona 5.

I think the sooner you just admit you get a bit sweaty down below at the thought of a Nintendo ‘going under’, the better.

Ironically, I’m getting a few games this Christmas and most of them are on PS3, supporting niche developers. I’m such a fanboy! :)

  112. Telepathic.Geometry

I think that Nintendo’s problems are as follows:

    1. Because their hardware is not as powerful as PS4 and xbone, and because they lack their online, social and multi-media features, even if a game is ported to Wii U, it will be markedly inferior (as a general rule, I believe Rayman Legends is best on Wii U).
    2. The gamble on the screen controller failed. Most games don’t use it at all, and the remaining games that do, use it very sparingly, as a gimmick. (I use the word “gimmick” measuredly). The result is, the console cost goes up, the controller size and weight goes up, the battery life goes down and there is comparatively little gain on the gaming side.
    3. 3rd party support has disappeared in a way we have never seen before. This puts more pressure on Nintendo themselves. They are one of the best devs on the planet, but they simply cannot support a console all by themselves.

I guess that Chris Kohler over on Wired hit the nail on the head. Down the line, they will probably make the tablet controller optional. It’s not unthinkable, considering they made the 2DS…

    #113 1 year ago
  114. monkeygourmet

I’ll try and answer these with my limited knowledge! ;)

    1. If Nintendo are struggling with basic HD titles on Wii U, don’t you think a more powerful system may have been misjudged? (At this time)

    2. I would argue Miiverse is amazing, yet under promoted. It’s a killer app that’s drifted.

    3. Agree.

Summary, but what about Miiverse and all that amazing community and artwork? I can’t believe you’ve not even had an opinion on it yet? Have you used it?

    #114 1 year ago
  115. Telepathic.Geometry

And just to show that it’s not only Ninty, allow me to list xbone’s problems:

    1. A lot of people don’t want a Kinect for various reasons, and especially they don’t want to pay for one.
    2. It seems like it is still a home for 720p games at 30 FPS. That may be unfair, but it nonetheless rings true. 3. The competition with PS4 will be fierce. For the most part, the PS4 games will look that little bit sharper, and the 1st party PS4 titles are likely to be jaw-droppingly gorgeous by comparison. That’s on a system half the size, $100 cheaper, and with no power-brick.
    4. The company’s PR is terrible. Many people probably still believe that they can’t sell their xbone games. They need someone like Shuhei Yoshida to be a front man for the company.
    5. The xbone’s voice recognition and TV services will probably never work as intended for a lot of people with regional accents or uncommon TV networks, etc.
    6. The xbone will never make it in Japan.

    Yeah, I like lists.

@Monkey: I’m sure Miiverse is great, and I have heard that sort of thing from various sources, but it’s not for me. I get home, do a bit of study, eat something, exercise, tidy the gaff, and get in some gaming before bed. So, rather than networking, I’m out cleaning up New Marais, or collecting juice, or green stars, or cursing at Sound Shapes.

That’s just me though. I’m not much of a social gamer in that way I guess.

I have played all the Gamecube games listed and some on the PS2 as well.

Again its Nintendo’s fault but this is not Gamecube days as now we can just roll up on the internet and watch gameplay videos to see what the game is about and see if it will be fun for us. As I have watched most videos related to the Wii and Wii U I can confidently say it doesn’t make me want the system now. There is no killer app for me that is pulling me in. Zelda usually does but after Skyward Sword I want them to try new things especially with that controller.

Its trying to incorporate the good aspects of Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker but plays it too safe. The temples were pretty easy and all the bosses except for one of them was pretty forgettable. I also didn’t like the inconsistency of gameplay where it holds your hand in some sections and others you are thrown to the wolves not to mention how annoying Fi was worse than Naavi in OoT.

  123. Telepathic.Geometry

@121: Like I can be fucking arsed. You contribute a lot to this site in general, but you are deliberately antagonistic at times, and I think you choose your words with that intent. Whatever, it’s the internet and being a cunt is the norm I guess, so it’s not like I’m giving you shit.

But I do wish a contributing member of the forum would make a bit more of an effort to discuss things, instead of using language you know will get a negative reaction. It’s not all your fault either, flame bait is harmless if the other person doesn’t get sucked in. Still though…

I don’t see any reason why we can all discuss, and disagree with each other without it being necessary to make the other side either agree, or admit shit you want them to admit. I’ve buried all of my flame-war weapons with years now.

@122: Yeah, I’m playing it in Japanese, so I do appreciate some of the vocabulary I’m getting out of her, but I swear to God she tells me everything. I’m pretty down on the graphic style actually. I don’t think it can hold a candle to Twilight Princess in that regard. I thought I’d get into it but… I also miss just being able to travel wherever the fuck I want in a big open world.

But it’s alright. I’m just finding it hard to motivate myself to get through it. I got as far as my Bird Test the first time over a year or more ago, and I quit again recently in the third big temple (Time?), but I’m sure I’ll pick it up again soon enough…

the wiiu is powerful enough. the new mario looks better than bf4 and killzone when it comes to artdesign and playbility. b4 is not impressing me at all. it’s just a bugfest in a high res and with good textures. shit trade off because it lacks in so many other departments technically. halo reach looks still more sexy to me, even ghosts, they run better too.

as the last gen faded, the games became less and less interesting and/or disappointing to me, the wiiu, vita and 3ds kept me alive gamingwise and i owned all the other consoles too. now that the ps4 is here and has it’s launch/ games drought (i’m not complaining. it’s always like that), it’s still these 3 machines that are the most relevant to me. the wiiu is powerful enough and it’s perfectly timed if you own other consoles too. nintendo couldn’t attract the casual market this time and the more hardcore gamers (at least those who only own one platform) want more third party support on their console of choice. that’s why the wiiu doesn’t sell well. it just didn’t do the casual market trick. for me, as a gamer who doesn’t only own one console, the wiiu still is a fantastic machine. in fact it’s, like i said, one of my most played systems and looking at miiverse, the e-shop with it’s holiday themed layout and tunes atm, the n-direct implementation in the shop, these little things just feel so fresh, the nes remix game available just after the announcement – this is cool stuff, i think you can call that next gen too. it’s definitely not happening on my other machines. then the touchpad in general, the multitasking and games like mario and pikmin, yes even windwaker plus touchpad…if you then compare all this to the ps4 and it’s bland features…then fkuc me but the wiiu feels next gen to me. that might change in the next few years with the ps4 picking up steam but for now, nope, next gen isn’t as impressive as some people believe. also keep in mind that the wiiu probably wont be around for 10 years before a next nintendo device will release, maybe 5 years overall.

i hope nintendos next thing will be an affordable nintendobox that doesn’t need to rely on third party support to survive. i am sick of people demanding stuff from nintendo that they’ve never been about. so very very very sick of that. i want them to be nintendo and to be as good at that as possible. that’s definitely the case atm. i enjoy nintendo so much more again. wiiu and 3ds are a huge step up from wii and ds and it looks like things are only getting better from here.
i don’t worry about nintendo because they deliver awesome stuff atm. game after game after game. to only look at the wiiu sales to judge a companys success is to me, very one-dimensional. there are tons of positive things to see. i paint a bright future for them. they are on the right way.

The topic has been discussed. But, as always happens, when opinions expressed do not conform to the Nintendo Mafia’s whims, the responses are levelled on an ad-hominem basis.

There’s only a few hundred topics where this has happened, so I’m sure it’s completely slipped under the radar of those with selective comprehension.

The real kicker is the plea the sometimes pops up about “it’s just my opinion so you just have to accept it” which is hilarious when voiced by someone who consistently shows utter intolerance of the opinion of others when they don’t align with their own.

Pointing out the irony of mocking nostalgia while looking forward to a HD re-release. That’s all. I think you and Dragon have decided to try and turn it into something to fit your own… (Ready for it?) Agenda…

    #155 1 year ago
  156. monkeygourmet

Btw, if your going to insinuate or accuse someone of having an ‘agenda’, it would be good to try and pinpoint it and announce it, rather than throw wild accusations without any ‘proof’.

I’ve happily listed reasons why I think Dragon has an ‘agenda’ for example, and the constant flame baiting, trolling, stealth edits then crying ‘victim’ are nice proof to back that up.

Edit, just to make it more clear:

    “You have an agenda!”

    “What is it?”

“I don’t know? You tell me!”

…that doesn’t really work or make any sense.

    #156 1 year ago
  157. Legendaryboss

My agenda was pointing it out and highlighting another issue.

Without proof? It was very obvious you had an agenda as you have just proven which clearly “suits” you.

This is because one does not simply quote someone from another article then copy that quote and then state to the person confusing/apply the same logic here without having an agenda.

I fail to see the need to announce, point out and prove something that was clear as day. Of course if the agenda wasn’t obvious then the proof would:

    A. Most likely wouldn’t exist.
    B. Be present if need be, based on something else.

Edit: There is a great deal in difference between knowing someone has an agenda and knowing exactly what that agenda is. They are not one and the same.

    Let me be dragongif ;)

I wonder how much longer these people will remain on their agenda and if this short-temper and bad-mouthing of theirs exist in real life too.

  159. monkeygourmet

Pointing out irony means I have an agenda? If I wanted to really pull Dragon up, I could’ve used his first post where he insinuated Nintendo hyped people up falsly before VGX.

That was pure flamebait as everyone knew Nintendo said they would be showing an already announced title… It was classic Dragon style. Thinly veiled passive agressive ‘compliments’…

In the end I just tried to point out the irony of the constant ragging on nostalgia based on his comments about FF10 being re-released. That was all, you have run with that but there’s nothing I can do about that.

I think you are twisting things somewhat. There are plenty of times I call Dragon out, but this display of irony / hypocrisy amused me, thats all. (As I said, I already ignored lots of flamebait).

I can answer the last part for you! :)

You don’t usually meet people who manipulate things and play people off against each other that much IRL.

Especially stealth editing and other tactics like that, it’s kind of tricky to achieve that, you generally get judged on how you communicate face to face. You can’t hide like you can in a forum.

Also, people tend to call you out if you cry ‘wolf’ or play the victim when it’s obvious you enjoy provoking people.

    Hope that helps.

    Reinstate the agenda.

An example of an agenda-fuelled commenting in this sort of context would be:

“I started posting as I saw there was too much pro-[brand] sentiment and felt the balance needed to be redressed”

I may have slightly misquoted the precise wording, but the sentiment is intact.

    And evident.

So your agenda is to disagree?

I may be wrong, but I don’t think that makes any sense.

Why can’t you just ‘disagree’ with someone, why have you brought ‘agenda’ into it?

Was it pre-deteremined agenda? (because that makes you look like a judgemental dick), or has the agenda been forged over time? (based on studying his agenda)…

    #168 1 year ago
  169. monkeygourmet

Thanks JM, so, my agenda is:

I disliked the heavy fanboy presence and tried to create more balance?

Okay, thanks, gosh! it sounds so awful when you word it like that! :)

    #169 1 year ago
  170. Legendaryboss

I brought it up in the scheme of things but you were the one who asked specifically about Francis in regards to agenda. Which i don’t know how it has any relevance to me or the subject agenda.

Well agreeing with him doesn’t work…

So there can only be disagreement.

    #170 1 year ago
  171. Joe Musashi

@169 You are not arbiter of balance in a community. Realistically, no one individual is.

That is not for you to decide and it is certainly not for you to act as judge, jury and executioner on.

The sheer levels of egotism required to leapfrog well past such basic considerations and proclaim yourself as some righter of wrongs is quite staggering.

  172. monkeygourmet

I was just asking because the word is being thrown around so much at the moment. I just dn’t think it’s being used correctly in many cases.

JM has kindly pointed out my ‘agenda’ of why I started posting, there is obviously more to it than that (I like the site in general and used to enjoy many of the comments), but yeah thats the gist of it.

@mg…better stop it man, we’ve been there so many times. these kids don’t want to talk about games. dragon wants his favourite brand to win and compensate something with it, getting a sales boner all the time, lb is two faced and likes to poke a lot and joe is shatner.
this is not about nintendo, not even about games.

i’m stuck in this zephir(called like that in the english version?) temple in wwhd…grrr i’ve played that game before, it was almost a speedrun this far, i ignored all the sidequests. but i really hate this temple. same with that water temple in ocarina. sigh. what i love about albw is that theres always something to do. you’re constantly making progress. it had zero frustrations this far. i think it’s my favourite zelda game actually.
but yeah, saw you practicing. maybe i should get my 8bit skills checked asap.

  177. Legendaryboss

And there we go, ignoring the initial @7&9 posts of game related comments. Just because i don’t do it in a passionate stylised love letter towards Ninty doesn’t mean its not being done. And your also ignoring my comment @152.

So that shows you are just shaping stuff in what you want to believe in/see.

@177: so that shows just that…aha. your world is very black and white then.
see lb, i think i’m pretty much done with exchanging opinions with you and your gang. it doesn’t make sense. we’re not making progress. i post my opinion here and nothing else. i’m having some warm words for nintendo atm because i enjoy gaming on their systems. there’s nothing more to that. you don’t like that? fine. you think you need to create funny names to mock this? fine. you think having a different opinion than you is delusional, ignorant? fine.
i hope for the redesign and i guess you are as well and that’s fine as well.
i don’t get your point in post 177. it was a discussion about games and nothing else, clear to see for everyone, no matter how you look at it. the guys derailing this thread are the very same as in every single nintendo thread. it always always always starts with the spyrokid you and the shatner. always.
it’s only my delusional, ignorant, mafia agenda talking now. i know. but i forbit it.

    #179 1 year ago
  180. Legendaryboss

Not my gang. Mocking? Do you not see how your own statement at @174 is a direct insult to those listed? Having a different opinion is delusional? Never said that.

sigh lb. have you lost track of your own posting history?
you’re playing the poor lamb now but you should just stand up for your own shit.

don’t you think constantly calling others names like ndf, the forbit it crew, mafia, saying they’re delusional, ignorant, dreamers and so on and on and on is not an insult? well in my world it surely is. maybe this is our problem here. i insult. you don’t. i get it. this is how your whole argumentation works.
but i really don’t care anymore. we’ve been here before about a million times. i’ll play some games now.

Look at that eager deflection when such staggering arrogance and conceit behind their implicitly admitted agenda is made abundantly clear.

And the partner swoops in, the trusty sidekick, to add more distraction.

Spin, lies, conspiracies, deflection, double-standards, conceit, hypocrisy, fabrication, accusation, arrogance.

Oh, but it’s my opinion, so you just have to accept it“.

    NDF = Retired

Delusional and ignorance = Was a quote.
    Dreamers = Nope.

If you don’t tell someone what pretext your talking about don’t be surprised if he doesn’t recall. Also i never said i didn’t insult i just said i never said “delusional equal different opinion than me.”

So now we are bringing in completely new scenarios to detract from what was previously said.

    Enjoy gaming.

“Why did you come back after your ban? What made you decide to change tact or what made you think that the forum missed your presence?”

I have a nice cup of tea, I want to hear your story.

I’ve given my reasons for being here, you must have a fine story about rising from the ashes after Pat’s immortal words:

Come on Satashi, I’ve nothing to deflect…

You on the other hand… (Well it’s quite obvious as you are squirming again).

Someone’s reply after your banning: (there are many like this btw)

“I agree xxx, I too avoided the place due to him; if there was an article with him posting in it I usually avoided it. I like a good arguement as much as the next guy, as you well know having been involved repeatedly! But you simply can’t argue with Shatner. Or talk. Or disscus. Or javelin.

  191. Joe Musashi

I’m not preaching (nice melodramatic word there – good for extra effect. Nice.) and the point being alluded to is certainly not about monotony. But I’m grateful you picked up on the methodology.

You also have things the wrong way round:

Why should you expect the outcome to be different if the events preceding it follow the same pattern?

LOL, don’t worry Ireland Michael, I’m sure you know that’s a rhetorical question. I mean, what sort of delusional arrogance would I be displaying if I strutted around acting like people on the internet were answerable to me?

    Can you imagine that?!

    #191 1 year ago
  192. Ireland Michael

You’re talking about the same people acting the same way all the time.

And you’re always the one going on about it. Every. Single. Time. You’re falling into the same stupid pattern that got you banned years ago, and it’s motonenous as all fucking hell.

    #192 1 year ago
  193. Joe Musashi

If people act the same way the same time then there’s no foul in expressing the same observation. 2 + 2 is going to equal 4. Don’t take issue with the smoke, deal with the fire.

But it’s just my opinion, so you just have to accept it!

And, come on now, Michael, you’ve been known to be repetitive in rhetoric yourself. And I know you’ve disputed the notion that you shouldn’t express your views when others have challenged you on it too.

    Reciprocity would be appreciated.

On a broader note: I passionately am against any effort to control or limit expression. Certainly on a topic as insignificant as videogames. That is why you see me advocate greater tolerance and understanding, rather than bannings and dismissals. I sincerely hope you appreciate where I’m coming from with that sentiment.

And I hope you appreciate what is occurring when someone whose ego has confessed their platform-specific agenda (167, 169, 171 above) persists in trying to bury it again under distractions and deflections of the nature being employed at present.

Edit: ▼▼▼ LOL, Right on cue! ▼▼▼

    My exact words were:

“I started posting because of TEA and his crazy Sony ways. Not to be pro nintendo, just to address the balance.

If anything, I mainly played on 360 back then…”

So the ‘platform specific agenda’ is what? Xbox 360? Anti Sony? Pro Nintendo?

Were getting close to this again aren’t we Shatner:

And you complain about same old, same old?! You’ve been doing this for years, all you’ve done is change target… (Hmmmm… Why do you need a target at all? It’s almost like you have predetermined agenda? No… That can’t be it… That would be crazy…)

    #195 1 year ago
  196. Hcw87

Facepalm worthy thread, just like pretty much every Nintendo article. And it’s no surprise seeing the same people going back and forth all the time.

I’d just give up having a discussion with the guy, he’ll try and squirm out of it whenever he senses he’s wrong about something.

    ”2+2 is 4”

”Really? You haven’t SHOWN me any proof of that”.

”Dedicated servers are far superior to player hosted servers”

    ”SHOW ME”.

Like trying to have a conversation with a monkey that thinks he’s clever.
