Rhianna Pratchett “would be interested” in a new Discworld game

Monday, 21 October 2013 12:20 GMT By Dave Owen

Rhianna Pratchett, writer on Mirror’s Edge and Tomb Raider, has admitted that she and her father Terry Pratchett would be interested in making another Discworld game, but only if the right pitch comes along. And they’ve had several that just haven’t been right.

“The original games I remember them very fondly. Every now and again, dad gets approached about a game,” she told Digital Spy.

“Dad is a gamer himself so he has an idea what he’d like to see, and we’ve just not got the right developer with the right pitch come knocking yet.

“I think dad is waiting to be impressed by developers. I think there’s a lot of potential there, and I know people have a lot of fond memories of all three Discworld games.”

She went on to suggest that avenues such as Kickstarter increases the chances of the project happening, as its possible to appeal directly to fans of classic adventure games. It’s not hard to imagine a Discworld game campaign raking in the cash.

“You never know what’s out there,” she said. “If the right developer, the right pitch came knocking, then I think it’d be something dad and myself would be interested in.”

There’s some uncertainty about who now holds the license. The most recent Discworld games were two developed by long-defunct Perfect Entertainment and published by Psygnosis, which was later acquired by Sony and eventually shuttered. Discworld Noir was published by GT Interactive, which no longer exists, Whoever owns the rights now might be missing a trick.

@1: It’s sad to see one of the greatest writers of all time slowly fade away, but not because of the public eye, but because of a disease.

I also think if anybody has a good grip of their property turning into a game, its the Pratchett’s. Rihanna herself has seen how storylines colide terribly with gameplay (see – tomb raider, woman murders hundreds of others, but story is profound and gripping) and Terry sounds like hes a gamer and knows what he wants. That can only be a good thing for when a great game eventually comes along.

Good, Tomb Raider can be rebooted back to the respectable roots it once had and Rhianna can write a Discworld game so nobody makes it into the exact opposite of what Discworld is supposed to be like she did to Tomb Raider.

Forgot to mention that such another reboot is necessary at this point, since the recent game that Crystal Dynamics pretended was a Tomb Raider game came with smearing the franchise’s history to make people think it was always nothing but Lara being a sex object. The way some people talk, they make the franchise out to be an interactive pornography worse than FFX-2 or Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.

They get “points” for encouraging people to depict Lara Croft as a rape victim and postergirl for guro, though. I’ve seen plenty of both directed at Lara since the new game. I’d be lying if I said both didn’t exist before, but the audience for it toward Lara used to be much smaller. The focus used to be on her being a tough badass.

Nerds need their T’n'A, yo. Screw meaningful characters, they just get in the way.

Yeah…. Silly Crystal Dynamics, making people think that they were somehow going for a lewd image in the past.

That was CLEARLY not the case.

    Hardcore revisionism fail.

I like how the Underworld box art didn’t even feature her face. Just her tits and short shorts. That’s all you need right there. Funny how you never see Nathan Drake shot from the lips down though.

Simply based on that I think the new Tomb Raider is a step up simply for featuring her as a full person, rather than just tantalizing bodyparts.

I’m actually playing through Tomb Raider and their are a few annoyances. ..

I’ve left a trail of dead in my wake, yet in every cutscene Lara simpers & whimpers :/

    #12 1 year ago
  13. DSB

@12 That bothered me too. She leaves a mountain of corpses, and they definitely should’ve done the brave thing and tone down the combat (which was never the best part anyway) and up the exploration.

But I don’t think she simpers and whimpers. She reacts to the fear whenever she has time to let it out, and that’s exactly what you’d see in a professional soldier after combat.

Your body experiences a total sensory overload, and it’s really pretty normal if you feel like crying like a baby after that. Which she doesn’t do, but I think the reaction is part of what makes her so compelling. She’s a hero, rather than a superhero.

… Although the sheer volume of slaughter makes it seem a little silly.

    #13 1 year ago
  14. Ireland Michael

@13 The only reason we never gave it any thought in the older games is because she was presented as nothing more than a “badass”. A super-human devoid of any relevant identity or character development. She slaughtered and killed and saved the day and didn’t suffer in any way… because that’s all the technology was capable of portraying,

I can’t speak for everyone, but I find “badasses” boring,

The old Tomb Raiders weren’t even good games to begin with. They were tedious chores, skillless auto-aiming shootfests obsessed with pixel perfect jumping, and completely devoid of story.

    #14 1 year ago
  15. zinc

^ No I felt like they wanted to really play the “woman in peril” card. If this had been a guy he’d have Rambo’d the fuck out long ago.

But I don’t blame Rihanna for that. Though the scene where Lara wades into a cavern of badguys to rescue Sam armed only with her bow… Completely forgetting the shotgun, rifle and pistol I’d spent hours modding up…

That was a shitty scene Rihanna -_-

@14 Sure, but you have to judge games by their time. Tomb Raider 2 was pretty huge, just for looking the way it did. Pretty awesome level design.

It’s just anything but timeless. Today it all seems dumb.

Other than that I agree totally.

With the new one it annoys me that the rest of the game couldn’t keep up with her. The overdone combat, and the lousy supporting cast. I was straight up offended by how halfassed those guys were.

@15 She’s a woman, and she’s in peril, but I think there’s a way’s way from there to being a damsel in distress.

Maybe it’s a glass half full, glass half empty sort of thing.

I saw a woman who was afraid, but constantly pushed herself to keep fighting, which to me is an ultimate manifestation of strength, and you saw someone who wanted sympathy.

I never felt sorry for her, I loved that she kept getting up every single time. I was totally suckered in by the antenna scene.

I could 100% relate to being scared as fuck by the climb, but knowing you had to grab the next rung. That’s the one part I’ll remember that game for in years to come.

    #16 1 year ago
  17. Ireland Michael

@15 I think the one best thing I took away from the new Tomb Raider game was how little her gender factored into her choices, reactions or motivations. That’s how you develop a good female character.

She looked like an actual woman too, which went a long way.

@16 I am judging them by their time. Even back then, I thought they were terrible games. I found it impossible to get excited by such cumbersome, clunky affairs when we were being provided with little like Mario 64, games that with a modern lick of visual paint would still play just as well as anything released today.

The scenery was nice, and the levels expansive. I will give it that much. But they were terribly designed and the controls were utterly shite.

    #17 1 year ago
  18. salarta

@15: It more or less amounts to turning Lara Croft into a damsel in distress, which is something she never was, then “liberating” her from a mold she was given during this game that never applied to her. It would be an excellent storyline if we were talking about Princess Peach, not so much when it’s done to a badass like Lara Croft was.

On the plus side, now that the blind gamer hype is wearing down, I’ve seen some people that once praised the game go back and see it for what it is. I’ve also chatted with a few people that also want the real Lara Croft to return, so there’s more hope that this junk won’t stick and hopefully the sole thing that remains is Lara dressing in ways that are more realistic and sensible.

    #18 1 year ago
  19. GwynbleiddiuM

@18 nope, It didn’t turn Lara into a damsel in distress. Usually damsels in distress wouldn’t ass rape an island full of crazy armed goons, they wait for a knight in shining armor to come and rescue them.

I still think to this date you haven’t touched the game yet – which makes your opinion completely irrelevant. And you also need to realize Lara is a young woman in the reboot, this is her very first adventure that molds her into Lara Croft the infamous tomb raider.

I mean their isn’t much of a learning curve. As soon as you get that bow your a killing machine.

@18 “It more or less amounts to turning Lara Croft into a damsel in distress”

No it doesn’t. *She* tracks down and saves everyone else on the island.

“On the plus side, now that the blind gamer hype is wearing down, I’ve seen some people that once praised the game go back and see it for what it is.”

You see what you want to see. You seem an insignificant handful of people who share your opinion and ignore every single thing that proves you wrong. The game is critically and commercially acclaimed in almost every circle, and even won over the feminist crowd that hate the very kind of character you’re claiming she’s been turned into… in the game that you’ve never played.

Almost nobody wants old Lara back. If they did, poor sales and the growing irrelevancy of the characters over the years would never have made the change *necessary* in the first place. Thanks to the new Tomb Raider game, the character is actually relevant again, for the first time in over a decade.

I totally agree on the lack of humor. The supporting cast is just absolutely terrible. I dearly wished that they would all be picked off like the expendable horror movie clichés they were.

You could do a lot with those characters, especially in terms of showing who Lara is in terms of how she interacts with people, but instead it becomes this pointless farce where you know exactly which 1980′s cliché is on display before they get to their second line.

I’m actually curious to see how “Lara” will be reimagined a couple decades from now. I can see two distinct possibilities. One is that fans of the real Lara Croft take over the IP and fix the damage that was done. This would ideally be happening as a result of a real resurgence of fans taking back the IPs that companies have been savaging just to try to maximize profit among people that don’t care about the IPs beyond the names and faces.

The other is the one that I think is more likely, which involves the building of a trend toward female characters as victims where the entire emphasis behind having a female protagonist is to see them get brutalized and made to suffer in as many ways as possible. Essentially, torture porn for the video game industry. Naturally, each game will wrap up with the woman “overcoming” the suffering she endures so that the company can proclaim it was about giving her a journey to become tough to appease feminists, while giving the torture porn fetishists what they’re really paying to see. Can’t say the audience isn’t there either, as there’s a reason torture porn films exist and continue to thrive. Natural progression, bring that into video games as the next phase of action and horror games so the player can be either the victim or the victimizer.

@30 “The other is the one that I think is more likely, which involves the building of a trend toward female characters as victims….”

    You are an idiot.

Women *like* the way they are being treated in media now, far more than they ever have, because for once their characters are actually being treated like human being. Women are finally being presented as lead characters, and more importantly as heroes.

“…where the entire emphasis behind having a female protagonist is to see them get brutalized and made to suffer in as many ways as possible.”

People don’t enjoy seeing the women suffer, you moron. They enjoy seeing them be victorious. What you label as women being “victims” is women being put through the same gruelling circumstance as men, but still coming out the other end victorious. Conflict is the basis of all storytelling.

Nathan Drake and Snake do it? Oh, that’s just normal. Lara does it? VICTIM!

You are quite literally the male equivalent of Anita Sarkeesian.

At this point I’m kinda hoping that salarta has a mental disorder. Holy moly can he talk a lot of demented, unrelated shit about something he’s never seen for himself :P

@29 The Russian movie? They already made several. They’re crap though.

@32 Right, but again I think she’s better exactly because she reacts when she has a breather.

You don’t see that in most games. I’m just not nearly as impressed with someone who goes through hell and doesn’t have more to say about it than some catchy punchline.

In some instances that’s fine, yippie ka’ye mofukkah, but that’s really all we’ve been getting for a frightfully long time.

The fact that she’s a real mensch definitely puts Lara above a lot of the protagonists out there in my book.

@32: Her name is properly spelled Sarkeesian and she wears earrings. :D I think I may as well take that as an honor given the harassment she endures and how she weathers through it without the need to start out fragile and build character to be able to handle harassment. :D

@33: Nah, I’m just doing the same as any person that is capable of judging a writer or director based on work they’ve done and interviews they’ve provided without the necessity of knowing every single thing about the person down to their favorite flavor of ice cream. :)

@34 Sure. I mean actually experiencing their work is kinda pointless, when you already have a deluded idea of what it’s all about, right? Ain’t nothin’ but a thang.

Personally I prefer an informed opinion over just preconceived nonsense based on what is so obviously an incomplete picture. Call me old fashioned.

And even though I realize you probably truly have no clue how that looks to others, that is exactly what you’re indulging in. Torture porn? Fuck right off.

Nobody is tortured in the game, but why let facts get in the way of incoherent ramblings, amirite? Let’s talk about dat rape scene, yo. It must be real, because I read about it on the internet.

@33 “At this point I’m kinda hoping that salarta has a mental disorder.”

Mental disorder is probably stretching it, but its undeniable that he falls back almost entirely on confirmation bias and selective reasoning as the basis for his arguments.

I think he’s probably fully aware of it too, under all that ego and delusion.

@34 “I think I may as well take that as an honor given the harassment she endures”

Harassment is never acceptable. The problem isn’t harassment towards her though. The problem is that not a single one of her arguments and observations stand up to any sort of critical analysis.

A self obsessed egomaniac who takes everything out of context, blows them out of proportions and completely ignores facts and information that heavily disprove their frivilous arguments. Yes, I can definitely see why you would take pride in being compared to her.

@34: “I think I may as well take that as an honor given the harassment she endures and how she weathers through it without the need to start out fragile and build character to be able to handle harassment.”

You realize that her entire career (if you wanna call it that) is based on her victimhood. But hey, wear it with pride for being compared to a shallow scam artist.

I’d love to say that she’s one of the many people that gives feminists a bad name, but I really think she’s much smarter than she appears to be:

@35, Just pointing out that if “needing to see for yourself” was the norm, nobody would need Metacritic.

And by torture porn i’m assuming Salarta is referencing the numerous gory death scenes for Lara? Ironic as i’d wager they were a nod to the death throes of “badass” Lara, back in the day.

That or Crystal Dynamics were ripping off Resi4/Deadspace in their attemt to give Tombraider even more of a survival horror feel…

@36 It just seems very pathological to me.

I suppose it could be as simple as “ye olde troll” but if it’s really such a big deal for him to be affirmed and reaffirmed in just how wrong he is, at any given opportunity, even if it makes him chuckle a little bit, then that’s still incredibly odd.

@38 There’s a big difference between looking at Metacritic and going “Nope!” and looking at Metacritic and going “I see this game for what it truly is”. One makes sense, the other does not.

And don’t even get me started on Metacritic… It’s just so wrong in so many ways. Arbitrary data turned into arbitrary scores made even more arbitrary by Metacritic themselves changing the values according to their whims. It has very little to do with an accurate representation, but sadly it’s just good enough for interwebs.

@35: Nah, it’s more like “experiencing” the work is pointless when you can utilize videos, pictures, interviews, etc to know games like 3rd Birthday suck ass through a straw, just like you can do the same thing for people! Soylent green is people, by the way. PEOPLE. PEEEEEOOOOOOOPLE!

As to your bits about the torture porn, excuse me while I unload a few things I’ve been saving up, because I’m having enough fun right now to do so. :)

That’s not a site indulgent in guro, it’s a site indulgent in PANTSU and cleavage as can be expected from such sites. The new “Tomb Raider” is the only time I’ve seen such content on there, where such material is fetishized in a sexual manner. I already know the arguments you’re going to use to shrug it off, I’m not posting them to argue, I’m just in the mood to finally give it out. I’ve seen plenty more than that in fanart and fanfic form over the past half a year. :)

With that, I think I’ve gone a little too far in this article’s comments section, so I’m going to stop there, probably try to hold back a bit more unless the article is specifically about “Tomb Raider” and not the company or people behind it.

@40 And not a single one of those scenes “happen” as part of the game unless you screw up. I think the worst I ever saw was Lara banging her head against a rock because I failed a QTE.

This is shocking, I know… but videogames have failstates. They’ve had those since they were invented. Those scenes aren’t there for you fap to (and if you are, then I think you only have yourself and your parents to blame) but instead they’re supposed to tell you that you failed miserably, and probably should feel bad about the protagonist getting hurt.

Calling that torture porn is every bit as unintelligent as it is ill informed. This just serves to underline everything I’m saying here.

And why exactly is a woman being impaled so much worse than a man being impaled? In Far Cry 3 I had a failstate where I was brutally stabbed by a homosexual who smiled while slicing my guts up. Where is your outrage on behalf of my gender?

How come I don’t get a white knight? And how do you know that Anita Sarkeesian isn’t fapping her brains out watching it over and over again right now?

  43. Ireland Michael

@38 People don’t need MetaCritic. It’s a hideously arbitrary way to judge the quality of something.

@40 “Porn” implies a very specific sexual enjoyment of something. Calling it “torture porn” suggests that the violent scenes were created for enjoyment. They aren’t. They’re failure states. The fact that a small number of sick individuals treat it in such a way is irrelevant.

They’re not even that graphic. There are dozens of games far more detailed and gory.

“I’ve seen plenty more than that in fanart and fanfic form over the past half a year.”

I’m sure you have. And as someone who has used the Internet for almost a decade… it’s fairly difficult come across that sort of stuff (especially nowadays) unless you intentionally seek it out.

I think its safe to say from these images that you probably have some rather twisted tendencies of your own. I’m not even going to waste my time buying any sort of “research” excuse.

I guess denial is a very strong force, and its one we all know you love to indulge it.

You’re as transparent as a sheet of glass.

Edit: The last picture makes absolutely no sense. Its a close up of her butt, one that isn’t even physically overemphasised. People moving the camera to create suggestive shots means… what exactly? That some people have too much time on their hands?
