Nintendo’s greatest strength and weakness is innovation, says Rayman creator

Rayman Legends creator Michel Ancel has shared his view of Nintendo as both a risk-taker, and its penchant for surprising people.

The quotes come from an interview with ONM, during which Ancel said, “Nintendo’s greatest strength, and its greatest weakness, is innovation. It’s a company that takes a lot of risks. Few people understand that innovation involves risk-taking, because you don’t control everything on the market.

“Today, the biggest surprises seem to come from Nintendo. People may like those surprises or not, but that’s a fact. Miiverse was a surprise, the GamePad was a surprise. What will come next? I can’t wait!”

Problem is that the gamepad sections of Rayman Legends are devoid of fun. Nintendo needs to innovate within their games (and raise the quality)- eg give Mario bold hand drawn 2D art. Instead we get gimmicks tacked on to cynical cash-ins. Waggle, 3D, touch screens (especially crappy resistive ones) won’t keep them afloat in the longer term. A Nintendo property with the production values (and creativity) of Legends would be incredible.

Yeah, I see them as ‘risk takers’, part of the attraction for me.

That and being the only videogame company still left in the business, riding out serious landscape shifts that have rattled even the biggest companies.

@4 I said “again” not because it had already happened before, but because I had already said that phrase!
