Killer Instinct: Chief Thunder redesigned

Friday, 16th August 2013 02:29 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Killer Instinct will indeed feature fan-favourite character Chief Thunder, sporting a new design and grapple-based moveset.

In a reveal trailer posted to IGN, which you can check out below, Double Helix discusses the difficulties of presenting a character which was designed in 1994; studio head Patrick Gilmore said that in 2013 you can’t just “lean in” on Native American culture and tropes without being mindful of social expectations.

That said, he was “in the roster from the moment we started planning this game”, so the developer has redesigned him, modernising his look but keeping his formidable feel. Chief Thunder is a grappling character with mostly ground-based play, and twin axe weapons. The video goes into detail on the character’s moves, which nod at some classic Killer Instinct specials.

Chief Thunder was teased at EVO 2013. Killer Instinct is a free-to-play fighter with paid DLC characters, which will be available at the launch of the Xbox One in November.

Thanks, Gematsu.

Sweet Jesus, I feel like this game was made for me and the fans alike that grew up on this game back in the 90s.

I worry about KI because that old Rare team that made the first 2 games are gone.Hell Rare isn’t even making it,it should be easy just cut/paste and you have a great fighter.

I’m sick of all this “I chose a PS4 … But this game look great” comments.. Who gives a shit what your buying. Talk about the game or shut up.

Other dick try to undermine the game cos it’s not been made by rare. This game is been overseen by the original creator of KI, Ken Loobs, who cares who’s developing it.

Anyways, this game is looking killer.

Why didn`t these idiots of developers take some time to ask the original designer about why the original Thunder looked like that instread of changing it to another generic american indian fighter?

@10 Because the original Thunder wasn’t even remotely generic at all, right?

The original Killer Instinct character designs are pretty much the epitome of the word generic.

#11 At least the original thunger has a more original looking, the new design looks like a ripoff of Nightwolf or T. Hawk.

@8: You don’t know what the FUCK you’re talking about. Ken Lobb wasn’t the original creator of K.I.! Hell, he was never even a Rare employee – he was at Nintendo at the time and now he’s at Microsoft.

The game’s original creators were Chris Tilston and Mark Betteridge – son, you best learn your history or shut the fuck up.

    PEACE!
