Virtuix Omni pre-orders now open

Monday, 12th August 2013 01:37 GMT By Brenna Hillier

You can now order the Virtuix Omini treadmill, a walking controller designed for use with the Oculus Rift headset.

You can order a Virtuix Omni for $500, which includes the treadmill itself, a support harness, and a pair of shoes.

You can also purchase two for $1,020, which combines shipping, so may be less expensive than purchasing two separately – in the US, anyway; freight won’t be calculated till closer to ship date.

The hardware is expected to ship in March 2014.

Virtuix Omni’s aren’t just one-way treadmills; they’re omni-directional, so you can run about in any direction in-game.

If you’re wondering how a full set-up works, here’s a demonstration showing a Team Fortress 2 player using a prototype treadmill, an Oculus Rift and a Kinect.

The virtual reality movement is really taking off now; John Carmack’s jump to Oculus Rift may be the tipping point.

Thanks, PCGamesN.

Because of the picture quality I was able to get I couldn’t see the Kinect camera or what it is he is using as a controller?

I would love one of these but not sure the wife would be too happy.

The Oculus Rift however is a definite buy, personally this is true next generation for me, a whole new experience instead of just a upgrade in graphics.

I really hope Sony and Microsoft get on board with that way it could go truly mainstream and become affordable to all. This could make kinect viable too.

    Can’t wait.
